Welcome to my first time watching this Studio Ghibli masterpiece. It's their first movie as a studio and It's Laputa Castle in the Sky or in Japanese Tenkū no Shiro Rapyuta (天空の城ラピュタ). This is a re-upload from when we had a lot of Ghibli movies on the channel so hopefully this stays up and you can enjoy it.
Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki with the score being composed by Joe Hisaishi.

I think the original plan for self destruct was to jettison the stone into space and let the structure fall, like in case it gets taken over and you don't want a flying castle used against you type scenario, but the giant tree has taken root everywhere keeping the structure intact and trapping the stone from leaving thecastle thus a huge chunk of it is now up in near space.

You really should watch Joe Hisaishi concert in Budokan commemorating the 25 years of existence of studio ghibli. It's an amazing experience.

Ahhh yes finally! I love this movie!! The aesthetics and music of this are really something else, even for Ghibli, it's so beautiful and industrial and everything. It's also funny and heartbreaking as well, and the characters are fantastic :) Mama Dola is fantastic as well as the other pirates :) def agree with you on the main villain being the worst villain, he's awful

I don't know if you've seen "Nasuicca: Of the Valley of the Wind" yet, but a friend of mine brought up a theory that the floating city of Laputa might have been what caused the "Seven Days of Fire" as referenced (and kinda seen) in Nasuicca, due to a war between two fractured parties of the Laputa royal family. Once the war had concluded, with the more honorable side winning, they were horrified by the aftermath of their war and decided to abandon the floating city out of guilt and disgust, believing that no one should have that kind of power.

This is one of my favorite Studio Ghibli animated films. The English dub is also really good. If you ever get the chance, check it out for yourself. Mark Hamill's portrayal of Muska is just perfect.

I know this is has been a year but I'm still gonna comment on some of your interrogations ! So first, about the "Balus" spell (destruction), I'm fairly certain only members of the royal family can use it (AND they need the stone, not just anyone can do it). Then, the point of the incantation itself was probably to destroy the castle in case it has been taken over, and therefore to avoid its power ending up in the wrong hands (however one might wonder why they didn't destroy the castle when they left it centuries ago, maybe they thought no one would be able to access it anyway (or use it, since only the royal family can). As for why it's only one word, well it's supposed to be an emergency spell, so if it takes 10 seconds to cast it's kind of pointless. Then, about why they abandonned the castle, I think the only explanation the movie gives is Shiita explaining that at the end the people here weren't happy because they were away from the earth, and basically away from the base state of what humans are supposed to be and do. Like they've detached themselves so much to simplistic things that their existence is pointless (something like that, not certain if I explained that properly). The water flooding certain part of the castle is just rain that has accumulated over centuries. You pointing out about the craters everywhere in the landscape is actually incredible well thought and I never made the connection, your theory is very plausible. Finally, the castle was supposed to be destroyed *entirely* by the spell, but since it's been centuries a lot of plants have grown into the castle (including the giant tree), the root systems kept quite a lot of it in place (as well as the giant flying stone), which is why it didn't entirely break.

I don't know how you chose the movies you're reacting to, but "Welcome to the Space Show" is an anime movie worth watching. I would even say that it comes close to Ghibli films in terms of world-building. If it has to be a Ghibli one: Pom Poko is so so good

In case you didn't catch it the pirate queen is an older version of Pippi Longstocking. (See the picture above her bed.) Miyazaki spent a lot of time in Sweden trying to get the rights to do a Pippi film but in the end could not cut a deal.

One of the main reasons why a lot of characters look similar to other characters in his movies is Hayao Miyazaki based them on family members or people he works with. In My Neighbour Totoro, the dad looks a lot like Muska. EDIT: I always thought it odd that the "Spell of Destruction" is just one word. You'd think it would be as long as the spell earlier to point out the location to the castle. And the only reason the top part of the island didn't get destroyed is that it was the civilian area and castle gardens. The destruction was only to destroy the weaponry from falling into the wrong hands.

There's a theory that all of Studio Ghibli's films take place in the same universe, with Castle In The Sky taking place most likely at the very end of the timeline, right next to Nasuicca. A friend of mine believes that the floating city of Laputa caused the "Seven Days of Fire" in the lore of Nasuicca due to a war between the two fractured parties of the Laputa family.

I think Japanese version is the best. (╹◡╹) The BGM of the English version has been changed a little. So, there are times when the movement and sound do not match.
@math9172

I entirely agree ! The original tracks (bgm) are utterly awesome, I love the sounds of synthesizer for Dora's flying machines, and I think the american version of the tracks really robbed a lot of charm and uniqueness of a lot of these pieces. That's why I prefer by far the original japanese version of these BGM, which are absolutely beautiful.

@@memer35 I agree with the OC. The villain isn't really good. I mean he's an asshole and he's hatable so at least he got this going, but he's too flat and uninteresting to be a good villain. EDIT : literally everything else about the movie is great tho, and the villain fullfills his role, he's simply not very interesting as a character, he's more like a plot device.
