Here is one of several tracks from Studio Jams Episode #52, taped "On The Road" at Regent University's TV production studios in Virginia Beach, Virginia. A fresh, totally unrehearsed take on Miles Davis' "All Blues." It features Peter White on guitar, Mike Cheney on bass, Everette Harp on saxophone, Gregg Karukas on keyboards and, from Hampton Roads, drummer Jae Sinnett. For more on the series, go to www.StudioJams.com.

The concept of the show is to bring together musicians of different genres that for the most part, have never played together. Rock or funk players generally don't have a natural feel for jazz and visa versa. The challenge is to find a mid point to make it work with everyone and to be musical. When you can do that the objective is reached and I think we succeeded. We play the parts to make everyone comfortable. Not trying to prove how authentic we can play whatever. Finding fault with someone's playing serves no purpose. Collectively it works. It's about making the music feel good the best way we can with the musicians we have playing. I'm the drummer.

Jae Sinnett Wonderful feel, nice groove. As to some of these comments, dilettantes love a forum in which to express their lack of understanding.

Jae Sinnett Very well stated, Jae. It's interesting on the very "note" to hear the "smooth jazzisms" of Ev and Peter as they emerge in their statements. Really catches the ear of one who has absorbed the modal period of Miles in its original form. Whether it "fits" or not is moot; it is the expression of NOW and SOMEONE -- a flower in the bloom that is above judgment. Great stuff. Your playing stimulates this session so well.

Jae Sinnett Better felt than told, Jae. I just started ukpright bass after a life of fretless electric. This song is one that I've been tackling just to see what my hands and heart can do, and believe me, if your drumming was behind me instead of my programming of Addictive Drums 2, I'd be a lot happier with my continuity and flow. This whole thing is just better felt than told, and each talent in that studio is too much for words.

This is my favourite lineup of the series, keep coming back to their tracks. Everybody plays quite tastefully, I also like the bassplayer, that he is not a jazzhead, it gives the music a good vibe.

Jae - Thanks for this and nice job. On this string I've heard some very impressive drummers and I'm sure you perused these videos, so you know. You're among some hugely talented guys. The tempo that you guys played All Blues here called for a standard jazz waltz on drums rather than a "French" style jazz waltz...so good call with regard to the drum part. Your ride cymbal recorded well. I'm guessing, from the audio and video, that it's a K Con?...Are you not endorsed?
@jasinnett
@jasinnett 9 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey Alexander Thank you Jeff. The ride on this video is a K Con as you described. At the time of this recording my Sabian contract was expired. I am now back with the company as of two months ago and my main ride is a Classic HH 22" which was a prototype at the time and they only made a few. I know Jeff Tain Watts received one. They just sent me the new HH 22" Light Ride which I'm just getting use to. The concept for the Studio Jams can be tricky because you're working usually with folks you've never worked with before from different genres of music. You just have to figure out what works for everyone. Not the place to take a lot of artistic chances. I just tried to establish a groove that made everyone comfortable. Thanks again.

mah38900 Me neither. I was not thrilled when the song was called, but that's the way the show is shot. Loads of great bass players have nailed this tune. My performance was not that great.
@SeerTrulth
@SeerTrulth 9 жыл бұрын
mah38900 That's one tiny corner of an infinite universe saying "I don't like it". Okay, glad you could express yourself. Might I suggest that this song call might have been new territory for not only the bass player, but for this combo as a whole, and that in THAT respect, the levels of things going on here might be more amazing than whether we, without wholesome supporting detail, don't "like" a particular part? I would risk betting that Miles himself would say "Go for it -- make it new -- grow with it" to these gentlemen. Heck, maybe he just DID say that, via my subconscious. Miles might say "That old way is tired; find a new way, then blossom forth from there. Use it to find something in your hands and hearts, but don't get stuck with it." Hmmmm?
