Ok. A question from a novice. Since my cd i listened to has already been "altered" and "beautify" in the recording studio, would it be better to play it back on a studio monitor at home than a normal house speaker since it will only be adding to another layer of "alteration", thereby changing the actual sound from cd?
@Gamez4eveR7 жыл бұрын
I kind of stopped believing in hifi after I had a couple hours with Tannoy Reveal 802s (and a bunch of other monitors, just liked those the most). I don't think there's anything in the hifi world for the price that can go that loud and still not be hard on the ears.

That massive speaker as your "regular house speaker"? Wahhh!?
@icey88166 жыл бұрын
Very true with acoustic sounding that matters from design although, I have to admit, Ive been using House book shelf monitors for few years, and have amazing Mixes, from different genre's. Its more of the person behind the mastering, than the speakers itself. My book shelf speakers used are some old Bic America DV62s, and do justice for what it is, im happy with results. I am looking to get a pair of Adams monitors this weekend. I may compare both for to review my thoughts.
@FishFish19952 жыл бұрын
In the end it all comes down to the frequency response of the drivers and the tuning they have undergone. If you can calibrate your speakers, whether home or monitors will be better is debatable. Are your speakers diy? What parts did you choose? Are you using built in amps or external ones? How clean is your AC power? (yes, that's a thing...). All in all it comes down to speaker capabilities and calibration. A controlled environment without reflections is also ideal.

Not a problem. Keep them coming. On the topic of the video, I have to track with studio headphones (Sony MDR-7506) due to my living situation. I play back when I can on 3 way Home Theater speakers. I always try to play my mixes on different speakers to hear what it sounds like. Any thoughts on tracking/mixing with headphones vs monitors?
@LewisBeasley9 жыл бұрын
Frank Arena Playing your mixes back on multiple systems is a GOOD HABIT! In regards to your question. I've been in lots of professional recording studios and around a handful of professional engineers, producers and artists who primarily mix on high quality studio headphones. My thoughts on tracking / mixing with headphones? If your ears are trained with headphones & your mixes are coming out great then continue to do so. I know you mentioned that you cannot really utilize studio monitors right now, however I do recommend that sometime in the future, you combine your mixing technique with both monitors and ear phones. If you limit yourself to just one of the two, then you limit your mixing technique. My other concern is that when you mix with headphones, the speaker is much closer to your ear. The loudness can put stress on your ears over a period of time which sometimes can damage the ear drum over time. In any event, you should mix on whatever your comfortable with mixing. The ultimate goal is to create a GREAT quality mix. Having "FLAT" studio quality headphones or monitors assists your skill set in getting that good consistent quality. I personally use both methods. I primarily mix on studio monitors. After I'm done with my mix, I will listen to it in headphones and various systems. I'll then make tiny tweaks if needed.

Thanks for that feedback/recommendation. I appreciate how approachable and responsive you are to your followers.

Your advice definitely got me on the right tract. I just wish when people are talking about a Home Studio setup on KZbin, they wouldn't call them "Speakers". Maybe they know a professional know the difference, but a novice would not have a clue, they should call them "Studio Monitors". Nonetheless, after you "calibrated" my mind to the right path, it only took me another hour of research to lead me to what I needed, a good Stereo Monitor for a small space. @johnr61686 жыл бұрын
An excellent video. much agree with the points made. Domestic speakers do tend to be made to sound 'good' or 'nice' whereas studio monitors are designed to reproduce the signal fed to them as accurately as possible.
@eabr28817 жыл бұрын
This video just adds to another big audio myth. All loudspeakers, even studio monitors, have their own inherent audio characteristics and shortfalls. To truly hear a mix as 'true', the audio output in relation to input is obviously key, but room acoustics and speaker positioning are mostly neglected and this is where even a pair of studio monitor's sound can become coloured.
@jamesb81935 жыл бұрын
Wrong you missed the point. Keyword flat, so you can enhance with true accuracy and hear the faults regardless of speaker positioning. There’s a clear difference in sound from quality studio monitors to house speakers to bs cheap studio monitors as well as the tech that when shopping for high end or mid range quality studio monitors.

"sound" doesn't travel through the wires. You're right that electricity travels through it, but it then travels through a coil that generates a electromagnetic field to move a magnet attached to a cone, that cone then vibrates to create "sound".

@AndieBlack137 жыл бұрын
At 1:38 "...the difference is the quality of sound..." Passive vs. powered" monitors is not really an issue...The manufacturers created powered monitors more likely, because they would have a reference point to engineer the driver portion....as the amplification is a fixed value. Also, considering the relative low cost of building an amp, the builders probably think it a "convenience" to the monitor buying community. This also limits failures from customers over-powering, or under-powering passives, creating damaged drivers,.... a warranty issue resolved. Passives can operate just as cleanly as powered versions...as I have not gutted a powered monitors, but, more than likely...manufacturers created amps inside these monitors not nearly as well made in some instances, than what is available with passives.

I am back to being serious. So I have 3 sets of studio monitors (super nice, pretty good, and crap for different reference and comparison) but I was thinking 🤔 ... if I added regular home “bookshelf“ speakers that would give me one more reference. My thought was... If it sounds great on my studio monitors, it should sound fantastic on those. Am I totally wrong? Ps. I laughed for literally for about 10 minutes after I watched your analogy, and read all the comments from my fellow “mix madmen”. Thanks for that man !!
@LewisBeasley5 жыл бұрын
Hey Steve! Yes, you are correct. Theoretically, if you have a good pair of studio monitors and a good pair of ears...Once you have things mixed/mastered well on your monitors, that mix should sound elsewhere. Aside, my monitors, I like to keep a couple pairs of larger reference monitors just to verify that my mixes sound good on small, medium and larger size speakers.
@SteveStockmalMusic5 жыл бұрын
Ok cool, thank you. Yeah, I just got the Audient Nero Monitor controller so that's why I was thinking...3 sets of actual mix speakers, my killa AKG K712 open back mix headphones, and then like ear buds, crappy headphones, and if I can figure it out...bookshelf speakers. I typically don't listen very loud, just occasionally to make sure I'm getting the impact I need, then of course when I hit the car it's all about the car test !!! I'm studying sound pretty hard, taking notes, and trying to learn from all of you great mixer cats out there so I really appreciate you taking the time to reply !!!!

+SHOBIN ZACHARIAS That really depends on the person and their preference. I will say this. The average person may not like the FLAT sound projected from a pair of studio monitors, including the KRK monitors. If your looking for a high quality sound, then I would suggest the Hi-Fi music system. If your looking for a more natural flat sound, then I would suggest the KRKs. Wrong, what you are talking about is "what's the difference between bad home speakers and good studio monitor"... Of course if you compare a pair of bad home speakers to a good set of studio monitor, than the home speakers will sound shitty (either boomy, shouty or edgy) while the studio monitors will sound fantastic in comparison. A good home speaker vs a good studio monitor will both have a flat frequency response and the main difference will be that MOST studio monitor will have a built in amp and MOST home speaker will require an external amp. And that feature is to save space since a lot of studios already have a bunch of electronics laying around so you don't have to add an amp to the mess but in the end, it's an amp powering some speakers... A lot of high profile studios actually mix with high end home speakers (ex; Abbey Road Studio mixes with Bowers & Wilkins 800 Diamonds speaker). Now, I get your point about low end speaker "lying" to you by putting an emphasis on some frequencies (more often than not, in the boomy 60-80hz range to give it that thump that give the IMPRESSION of bass) but that is present only in VERY low end stuff. as soon as you spend a respectable amount of money, you get decent flatness. And if you intend to mix with cheap studio monitors, it wont be any better, you get what you pay for! I don't mean to be offensive, I just don't like the way you put it. Listening to this video, It's like you are saying that home speakers are bad and studio monitors are good. And it's not the case! I'd rather mix with a good set of home speakers than a bad set of studio monitors. And bonus point to the home speakers for letting me choose the amp so I can get something good with a toroidal power transformer. It is very rare to have that feature on built in amps on studio monitors, most of them are using EI core transformer which, in most cases, lack in dynamics! Again, not trying to be offensive, it's just that the world of audio and acoustics is loaded with misinformation and false theories! And I hate it when I hear colleges and friends believe wrong things because they heard some guy pretending to know audio say it.
