Always a pleasure Mike. Thank you! NOTE-I have never seen this information in any manual or video: If you are importing a MIDI file that was recorded on a DAW not using a click (free loose tempo jazz, etc) you must have your DAW set to the same tempo as the DAW it was recorded on even if that tempo has nothing to do with the approximate tempo of the performance.

Velocity is NOT volume :) Velocity, effects volume, but velocity is how hard the the instrument is hit. Normal velocity in your V.S.T. is 100 for each note. Higher numbers hit the note harder and lower numbers hit the note softer. This is important because velocity changes the performance far more than volume. Don't use velocity to control volume. Bad idea. I am not criticising this helpful video, just trying to add to it. Maybe it is covered in another Creative Sauce (love that name) episode.

A third way and the fastest and quickest to enter the Edit Window is simply to 'Double Click' on the Midi Clip itself. That opens up the Edit Window and you're immediately ready to go.. Instruments you don't have to drag it all the way across, you can just drop it either on the mixer or the track Window and it will automatically set it up for you as well. The same goes for creating effects to which you're going to use Send. Drag and drop straight onto the mixer and done. NIce clear explanations of how things work, a little slow for my liking, but explained well. thanks.

@CreativeSauce4 жыл бұрын
Hi Olivier. I have a little explanation about why I use both on my website here (www.creativesauce.net/why-i-use-cakewalk-and-studio-one/). I'm a little hesitant to compare, as one is free and the other costs several hundreds of dollars. I will say however, that I found going from Cakewalk to S1 fairly painless, having used Cakewalk for 20 years or so. Certainly you should expect that Studio is, and can be used for professional releases, and then again, its quite possible to do that in Cakewalk :)

This is a great tutorial! I'm having one issue though; I wonder if anyone could help? I have recorded some MIDI notes with my keyboard and dragged a virtual instrument onto the track so that it will play the notes, but when I press play, the notes are played very staccato (they are extremely short). On the screen, they appear to have the length they are supposed to, but when the virtual instrument plays them, they all sound completely staccato. I tried some different instruments and they all have the same problem. The MIDI information is correct, but the playback is wrong. What can I do to fix this?

Not sure. Maybe check that you don't have a gate effect on the keyboard mix channel?

Hi Mike, I'm Jan and I hope you're well 😁. Love your down to earth vids on home studio recording. I stepped into DAW style recording with your cakewalk vids But switched to presonus as a result of getting the artist version with my interface. Love studio one (had to upgrade to pro for the vst support I collected while using cakewalk) so I'm grateful that your tutorials have moved to studio one as well. Hope youll come round to an in depth piece of the chord track and the cord selector interface and all it can do. Ive done Everything you asked for: subscribed, rang the Bell and disliked twice 😉👌. I've been cakewalk since 3.1, but have become a bit disillusioned by its getting left behind - Studio one has built in support for NI a series controllers and Presonus do their own hardware control surfaces. I can't see Cakewalk catching up anymore. Also S1 has got to be more stable than Cakewalk. So it's great to see these videos coming out to help an old brain get to grips with my demo version.... But just like my wish for CbB, a short video on the basics of S1 with Komplete Kontrol etc. would be great...

I find it confusing that what he calls velocity seems to mean volume, not ‘velocity’ (speed)! Otherwise, it provides me with the tools that I need. I combine audio tracks with my synth for most voices, but I am using MIDI to get better string sound...

Mike, Hi..I've just changed over to Studio One 6.2 and I am determined to finally get the hang of MIDI! I noticed that all the midi notes on your demo were two tone (dark blue and light blue, left and right respectively). What does this two-tone illustration mean exactly? Hi Mike! 1) As I have understood Studio One (S1) can't load/receive SysEx data such as GM, GS and XG to reset to a external sound module device? In my case a Yamaha MU 80 to reach the lovely Yamaha XG sound banks. I can't find any such menus in S1. 2) Is it possible to load and use soundfonts in S1 or Cakewalk by Bandlab? I know It's possible in Cakewalk 9. 3) Is there any VST Yamaha XG plugins available to download and install? Thanks for your superb channel :) /Sincerely Peter

Ti ringrazio di cuore e auguro all the best!

When I click Play, the meters are moving for each Midi track, but no audio from my Laptop is playing. It's just dead silent. Speakers are on, nothing muted etc, but no sound.
