Hi Kelly, I could happily rummage around your lovely studio for days! I love old keys and boxes too. Thanks for the tour. By the way, I've been doing my husband's family history and they were welsh being Jones. They owned a pub in Blaenau Ffestiniog. We will have to go and visit some day, been years since we were last in the UK. Hello Gabriel🖐

Hi Nicola. Yes, Jones is a common name here. Every time I buy an old family bible I think to see if the descendants might want to have it and every single time the family name is Jones! So that doesn't really work. 😁

Hi there. Thanks for this. I mean to redo this someday but with my husband as cameraman it was a ton of work so maybe we will skip that. 😺I am good with messy - I have to be - but from time to time I do a deep(er) clean, otherwise I am just moving stuff from pile to pile and it ends up taking more time to find one piece of paper that I have buried in a pile than to clean and put it where I can find it. Does that make sense? Also, I always find tons of lost art supplies when I clean so there's that.

Hello and welcome, Rayanne. Thank you so much for your kind words. It really does make my day. Stash-wise, I have to cull ruthlessly from time to time but it helps as I am of a certain age (ahem) and have a better sense of what I will really use in the time I have left and what it is holding on to paper and stuff because it is here. Oregon, eh? I have heard that the weather can be similar to what we have in Wales: wet but very pretty. Kelly

Hi Roberta, that is hilarious as that is the way I feel when I see these things in the wild - I want them all. I feel it is a sign of growth that I can leave some of there for others now rather than acquire them compulsively. Partly because I live in a small flat and there are only so many French linens you can use. Maybe if I had the rambling old farmhouse. Sigh. In the next lifetime???

Hi Lynne. Thank you very much for touching base and those kind words. But believe you me, it has its tornado days. Often just after a youtube video taping as in the interest of continuity (as we big time filmmakers call it) I throw things on the floor just out of camera range and reach for something else. A video often takes as much as six hours to make so at the end those papers just stay where they landed! For a day or so, anyway. 😁

In this biz of collage books and papers, they may be pretty thin and flat, but they can still very easily, get outta hand!! Thank your wonderful hubby as well, for filming this peek into your life. It always seems that when you actually get to see where some of your fave creatives work, you just feel like you really know them a lot better. Greetings and Salutations, Miss Kelly! Your studio is a fabulous extension of your completed work. I also gleaned some creative inspiration from this. I've been a life long journaler, but I'm fairly new to junk journals & altered books. I've become a bit overwhelmed with how quickly junk journal materials grow. I noticed that, unlike mine, your stashes are congruent to your finished art. I think that is because you've nurtured and developed your unique artistic vision and voice. It's going to help me move beyond techniques to more thoughtful and deliberate expression in my own creative endeavors. Thanks for sharing!💐A little tip of mine: I use a decorative yard tile for a book press. Bonus: leaned against my shelf, it doubles as a decorative element.
@BookandPaperArts
@BookandPaperArts 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the thoughtful comment, Debra. I like that yard tile idea: it's all about being resourceful, isn't it? When this was my hobby I had cuttings in envelopes, then shoeboxes, then it got to where it took more time to find something than to make something. I bought my studio six years ago and now have the luxury of bigger boxes devoted to one topic. It is still messy but more organised chaos than anarchy. 😎 Kelly

The hats, the keys, the boxes of ephemera (although my backlogs are stored in Itoya portfolios) I have boxes for flowers, birds, butterflies, cats, and business ephemera. I hang my specialty papers on old wooden skirt hangers and my book press is made of iron acquired through similar circumstances.I even have the rosaries although mine are from Mexico and South America. Ah, serendipity.

Holy macaroni, this is amazing. Down to the paper on skirt hangers. I did have to look up Itoya portfolios. They look classier than my bunged up Rubbermaid but they do what they say on the tin and when I think about a better system I get distracted by making stuff. As for hats, I got into all of this (in a very winding way) through hats. Where is your studio, Sheryl? Can I come and live there? Kelly

Yvie, the reason I bought the studio five years ago it because before that most of this stuff was in our one bedroom flat and I was pretty much informed it was becoming grounds for divorce.😁This place is small but around the corner from where I live and cheaper than getting a two bedroom flat and there you go. But when it was in the flat, I had those huge, flattish storage boxes that fit under the bed and all the paper and stuff went there every night. Keep on making! Kelly

You have a fabulous studio, and I loved the tour ...also appreciate the story regarding the book press that you thought you needed and alas what we think we MUST have and will of course use ALL the time,,,is not the case. I loved the big old stack of books for a WEIGHT,and the doily ontop is such a awesome touch. Love your channel, just stumbled onto it a few nights ago.

Hi. Great tour! I would definitely come in and stroll around. What do you make with the children board books? I always see them and can't think what I'd use them for. I also haven't made any bookcover art for the wall. I love the cigar box shrines. So many ideas my head is spinning.

Well Miss Kay if your head is spinning with ideas then I have done my job and that makes me happy. I strip the glossy paper from the board books, gesso the boards, then use it as a kind of art journal. Here is a video I made when I was on the design team for The Graphics Fairy. It is one of my early videos and the quality is a bit not great but it will give you an idea. I will be making more later in the year. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnTElYKJhdOLraM

Lovely arty, artful studio. I love old books, they're works of art themselves. I've managed to pick up a few old beauties quite cheaply at Hay on Wye. I'm so jealous of that beautiful book press. It's gorgeous. I can't believe I've not come across you on our many visits to Swansea, it's a lovely place. Our daughter graduated from uni there last summer. We live just an hour's drive away.

Well hello, Karen. Yesterday I got a book from 1731 HERE IN SWANSEA. Minus the cover but with engravings so ding ding ding. My studio is in the marina. Please let me know next time you are this way and we can try to meet! Best to try to arrange it, if even vaguely, as I am not always in the studio. If you send me an email at kelly@bookandpaperarts.com I will forward you my mobile number. Oh, and Hay on Wye is my idea of paradise, or it used to be back in the day. Despite my (lack of) accent I have lived here 18 years and remember it when it was 40 bookstores, one down-at-hill teashop, and some sheep.

1731! Does it still have a title page? Still quite a lot of book shops in Hay, although the children's bookshop Stella & Rose has gone but they do have a shop in Tintern, or they did last time we were there back in the summer. Thankyou for your kind offer. Would love to see your studio in the flesh. When I showed my daughter your video tour she recognised your studio instantly, though she thought it was a shop. Unfortunately you were closed otherwise she'd have asked permission to come in. Though she did have a cheeky peek through the window. ; )

@@karenselway836 Hi Karen, a lot of people think it is haunted as I am only in "by chance" and sometimes if the door is open they RUN in and say they were afraid I would disappear as no one is ever in. I do sell as a shop and have pretty things displayed but altered books are not big movers in Swansea. 😉 And more's the pity. I am going to be doing workshops at the Gower Heritage Centre this summer so - stay tuned ! Kelly

I’ve been fussy cutting while watching this video. What a charming space you’ve created to work in! And how glad I am to see a working studio that is not frighteningly clean and organized. 😅 I’m curious about two things. (Curiosity is only one of my besetting sins.) You have either an American or Canadian accent; how did you end up in Wales? And I note in your videos a preponderance of Catholic imagery. I myself am a lapsed (Spanish) Catholic, but I’m still very much influenced by my background. Much of that imagery still speaks to me (as well as mystical imagery from around the world). I’m wondering what role it plays in your work?
@BookandPaperArts
@BookandPaperArts Жыл бұрын
Why thank you. Everytime I start to clean and organise my husband yells at me: "No one wants to see an organised art studio!". How I got to Wales is a long story and I am going to try to get around to an intro video about that before the end of the year. In the meantime - this is not my real accent so guessing won't help. I am from a farm in rural Mississippi and no, not even kidding. But I've lived in Wales for almost 20 years and I've been a UK citizen for over 12. Now, I am not Catholic, not even traditionally religious. You might say I am a Transcendentalist. But I work in old churches and abbeys a lot because they are where the stories and the history and the art and the culture and the whole-bunch-of-stuff about a place. The saints just kind of came second. Also, here is a piece I wrote about it. bookandpaperarts.com/saints-the-unknown-and-alter-egos/ Okay, off to get this day on the road. Feel free to ask questions (curiosity is my word 🦋) and share pieces of your own story. I really do like to compare notes - it's what makes the world go around. Wildly, creatively yours, Kelly

@@BookandPaperArts Thank you for pointing me to your blog entry. That was fabulous. I absolutely agree that the world is mysterious, and in fact, we need it to be. In a lovely bit of synchronicity, I recently had an idea for an exhibit and a local gallery bit-they want a proposal. The theme is Pantheon for a Modern World. Modern times have not made gods and goddesses obsolete. The complexity of today’s world is such that we need them now more than ever, but maybe in an updated version. I’m hoping to see artists submit either revamped or entirely new deities, angels, spirits, and saints. It’s exciting to think that maybe the gallery will accept the proposal. Fingers crossed!

I also did bookbinding for a hobby and they kind of came together at some point. 🌻
