Thanks for the tour, its a awesome studio with so much cool gear! Most studios look like the front page of a furniture store brochure! Your studio looks like you're really working there and that's great! One question remains, where can you sleep there if you stay longer than a week? Probably on the couch! Thank You! :-)

Are you using a Mac Pro for your MOTU connections? Saw one possibly under your desk, but I thought I hear you mention iMac…smile, and heard you saw the print computer is the MacBook. I am converting from a 2012 Mac Pro to an M1 Mac Studio, which has not been fun. The lights, camera gear, and audio treatment was orrery slick. Your Roxul Clouds look not fun to hang, but are clean looking. Good tour video!

Yes we run a good old Mac Pro from 2009 that has been heavily modified. The MOTU connection is PCI. I completely forgot to mention that! At some point later in the year the big upgrade will happen which I am not looking forward to.....It will be grate when it's done but I'm sure it will be a pain in the ass! The Mac Studio you mention is a possibility but I'm also looking at the new M2 mac minis. The print laptop is a 2012 MacBook Pro. Thank you for watching and commenting!

@@Ultimatestudiosinc, just a heads up. You can load up a Mac Studio with 64 GIGs of RAM, and I also did the 2 T drive. I think they have more ports than the Mini, and bought the OWC Thunderbolt port and Thunderbolt dock, bought and extra USB dock, and still see all the Studio ports gone. It is scary to see how many ports I needed…smile. I am going to document everything I do as I keep loading stuff, but either way, if you and I switched to a PC, it would still be a pain in the butt. Good luck on that. Also, I got an NMVe Thunderbolt drive and am using that for sample libraries and it seems faster than my internal SSD in the Mac Pro. Also have a dual case for 3.5 and 2.5 drives and added a drive port, so I could just pop in drives when I want. Yell and I will send you info on hardwiring with an extra NIC cable to connect drives from each computer. The Port replicator had a network Jack, so I have internet connected and connected directly to my old Mac and transfers feel like the drives are internal to the Max Studio…smile. You need 3 of you with your studio maintenance though. Lot of stuff to deal with. Thanks for the reply.

Hi there! Altough I'm also interested in audio/music recording and have learned a lot from your videos over the years, I do video production and live streaming as my main job so I'm mostly interested in that. Have you maybe done a tour that is focused specifically on the video side of things? I know you've touched the surface a little bit here and I generally get how your setup is laid out, but I'd love to see your video signal flow in a more detailed manner, maybe with an example setup (or just a BTS video before or after a stream so we can see how it is set up with cameras in place). A couple of video-related questions that came to mind while watching: you're using GoPros, but I have learned that their HDMI output has a very noticeable delay. Do you compensate for that somehow or have you found a way around that issue? Also I see you are mixing SDI and HDMI so I was wondering how you take in / distribute the video signals. No worries if this question is a bit out of place, you may deem a whole video on this subject not very fitting for your audience which would be understandable. Thank you for showing us around the studio anyway!
@Ultimatestudiosinc
@Ultimatestudiosinc Жыл бұрын
These are great questions. I've been thinking about doing a more detailed video about the setup but wasn't sure if anyone would be that interested. We have a live stream on Friday with Roswell Pro Audio. It's a little smaller setup so I'm planning on getting some BTS of how everything is setup, routing, etc... We are going from one session to another so I don't know how much time I'll have but I will try and answer some of your questions in the video and get it slated for a release in the next couple of weeks. At some point in the near future I will do something much more in-depth. Thank you for watching!!

Hey Charlie, very cool studio with lots of gear! I have two questions: 1) Have you had any issues with the MOTU 24 I/O? I'm referring to noisy power transformers or heat? I have two 24 I/O connected to a Yamaha RM-800 inline recording console and had those issues in the past but since I did some electrical work to isolate the studio from the rest of my house, I guess those issues are mostly gone but I have both racks separated with a 1/3 of rack space so that helps with some ventilation and also to make it easier to patch all the 1/4" snakes on the rear panel. 2) I saw an ART TPS below the Fostex reel-to-reel. I couldn't tell if it was the original or the current production with the impedance knob. I'm curious, what are you using it for? I have the original and changed the tube with a 12AU7 because I thought the preamps could distort easily and the tube change did the trick. Now I have a bunch of other preamps and almost never reach out to the old TPS as a preamp but I found that with the 12AU7, you can get some interesting harmonic distortion, not to mention that the so called "presets" also have different types of compression. I may change the tube back to a 12AX7 tube to experiment some more. Anyway, I'm curious to know how you use it.

I have only had one problem about 12-13 years ago where a unit just died outright but MOTU replaced it. I've never had an issue with heat or any type of noise. They have been solid workhorses. Though this may be their final year as we are contemplating a computer upgrade sometime later this year.

@@Ultimatestudiosinc Are you sticking with MOTU audio interfaces or do you have an alternative in mind? Those Presonus audio interfaces that Dave Vignola got seem to be a good cost/effective way to go but I've always been concerned about potential latency when switching to USB connections even though I don't use plugins beyond Melodyne and Cakewalk's Pro Channel EQ.
@Ultimatestudiosinc
@Ultimatestudiosinc Жыл бұрын
It is highly likely that I will stick with MOTU. If that is the case I would probably start with four 16A's. The Quantum 4848 from Presonus intrigues me though and after talking with David about them they are a possibility. I believe the units that David has are Thunderbolt but I could be wrong.

Is there any way to angle that GoPro more to where it’s a bit more POV, angling more towards the top of the console as opposed to the bottom?
@Ultimatestudiosinc
@Ultimatestudiosinc Жыл бұрын
In it's current position it's centered on the console to make it easy to see everything. But the arm that it's mounted on makes it easy to position anywhere.

What kind of issue? Noise? Breakers? Amps?
@Ultimatestudiosinc
@Ultimatestudiosinc Жыл бұрын
When you have that much gear there are multiple places for grounding issues. Multiple paths to ground, patchbay grounding issues (if you have one), rack rails causing ground issues, other home/studio appliances on the same circuit as your studio gear, etc... It can be maddening trying to chase down an issue like this. I don't have any issues. All of my control room gear is on it's own breaker(s) with earth grounds, each rack has it's own power conditioner and the racks, console and computer are split between 3 different backup batteries. No issues at all. Years ago I was having a hum issues with a specific rack full of gear and after weeks of troubleshooting we discovered that one piece didn't play nice with the other gear in that rack. I have no idea what that reason was but I moved it to another rack and the issues disappeared.
