Mariya Vasilyeva questions identity patterns and gendered power dynamics in her digital collages, video installations and performances. Her practice considers body politics and the representation of women in public versus private. She often uses her own body as a site of digital manipulation to address broader social concerns.
Her video installation "ALTAR 2.0" contrasts baroque architecture and imagery synonymous with the Roman Catholic Church with the aesthetics of contemporary pornography and eroticism. The artist thus highlights the perverse connections between sex, violence and sexual violence within the religion.
