I think the thing to remember with college lecturers criticising you is that whilst they are your teacher, they’re also just people and people all have their own personal tastes. Art is very subjective... One of my lecturers always hated my work, it wasn’t to his taste at all, and at first that bothered me until I realised that I also hated all of his work. We just didn’t like the same things at all and that’s okay. He wasn’t my ideal audience/super customer and I wasn’t his. Just because one person doesn’t like your work doesn’t mean that will be the same for all people. I had such contradicting criticism in uni from teachers that it really taught me that my work was never going to appeal to everyone and that’s okay. You have to learn to take the constructive parts on board and not be like ‘oh they just don’t like my work’ but also not let anyone’s critique completely steer you away from your own style and work. Listen to their constructive comments and apply what feels right. Sometimes you might have to compromise to get the qualification and fulfil the requirements of a certain brief, but that doesn’t mean you should change the work you are doing outside of college completely in line with that criticism if it doesn’t feel right to you. Likewise you’ll have to compromise to fulfil client briefs later on, so it’s good practice for that, but not every client or teacher criticism is something that needs to change in your personal work. It’s all about adapting to the requirements of each situation.
@furrylittlepeach6 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Side note: You should always make the client happy, but that doesn’t need to be in the ways that they suggest, it’s your job to find the best creative solution and pleasing the client is part of that.
@ZinziGraham6 жыл бұрын
furrylittlepeach yes definitely! I've had clients suggest awful changes that would have never worked because they're not thinking about it with any experience, which is of course why they're paying you. I had a girl who wanted me to make her professional website and logo flashing diamante gifs. She was over the moon when I steered her towards foiled business cards instead, although it took a LOT of work and listening to her criticism to get her to that point.

furrylittlepeach I have a question for your Q&A 🌻🌻🌻 what are some basic tips that you might have for kids in earlier high school who want to pursue art as a career and if they are doing it for one of their electives? If they love doing art at home and at school, what are the ways that you would suggest to get people to notice their art? Thank you so much, keep on inspiring 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻

I know everyone has their favorite tools, but I am wondering if your hand feels cramped with that brush over time. My hand couldn't take that, but I am older. Have you ever tried those brush pens that hold an amount of the color you are working with so there's less redipping and a larger implement to hold onto? Thoroughly enjoying your making your passion your job, excellent role model for those who wish to pursue self employment in creative fields.

I don’t squeeze that hard on my paintbrush so it’s actually okay - and I work on this piece for an hour at a time then have a break. If the big painting was Pencil it would be a hand killer for sure
