I’d also prefer it here. I think most of us are fans because of the KZbin videos and IGTV is still fairly new but I have to go out of my way to watch those videos. I'm starting to panic as it's my full time job and I'm struggling with a new chronic illness diagnosis but it's somewhat comforting to know it's not just me. Yes! I thought it was just me falling behind in all aspects of my shop but it was really refreshing to hear other people are going through the same thing. I decided to take a brief break at the end of May until mid June to take care of personal things, take a break and also try to focus on new products and designs. We're also in the process of buying a house right now as well so having a break was refreshing but trying to make sure there is still some income flow has been a messy learning experience! Wishing you the best of luck on your lull and fingers crossed on your house search!!

Firstly that cafe was you in cafe form! THANK YOU FOR THIS! I love following your journey. I left grad school this year (because 2020 lol...) and am working my business full time right now, so it's the first year that the dips and slow periods are really obvious, especially after the e-commerce boom last year! It really annoys me when business owners online never acknowledge the downsides or slow seasons, as if it's perfect all the time, because we all know it's not! I'm a relatively small business, started in a niche fandom, got around 2,000 sales under my belt and it has been more or less consistent but this entire year has been R O U G H. I've had my etsy business for just over a year now and the last two months have been awful for sales. It's been really upsetting for me since I would usually make enough to cover my half of the rent but now I make less than half of that. I have all these new products I want to make to hopefully increase my sales but I've been struggling with motivation lately. Wedding sticker range will help with spring summer slows. I’m not sure if you do them but what about pregnancy stickers for appointments & scans etc... & maybe an academic range for school, after school activities, tests, equipment for lessons etc... Could do a range for little kids as well as older ones. What about reward charts too? The list is endless for your style 😊

Lately I’ve been watching a lot of your vlogs because my job has been really horrible and your videos are one of the few things that cheer me up lately. @@HeyGuncle the shipping right now is disgusting. I had to shut off my international shipping. My local post person told me to ship to Canada from USA is 20-40 bucks for a flipping sticker!! I think a lot of online sales are slowing down because a lot of people are going out to do stuff or are more conscience with their money as they spent online like crazy last year. The fees suck and it can be hard to be slow, but these periods don’t last forever!

Business ebbs and flows, but I think with everything opening up again, and it's getting to be nicer and warmer (and kids out of school for summer) in the northern hemisphere, so I think that probably accounts for the slow down. Probably more so this year than last because lockdowns are loosened quite a bit more than last year. My business actually picked up, but it was slow last year. ...I had to edit my comment to add that these slow times are a great time to reinvent your business and find alternate revenue streams (which you are looking to do - yea!). That is always something I'm working on in my down time. Passive income is always a great revenue source and with your illustration you have a plethora of options!

Can I just say how appreciative I am of you talking about sales being slow. You are spot on with everything you said and I’ve been experiencing the exact same emotions. I have been running my shop for 4 years now and the lockdown small business boom was INCREDIBLE for my shop, best year I’ve had BY FAR. Then this year I have seen quite a drastic decrease in sales for the first few months. It’s still slow for me but is picking up more from those earlier months. I’ve been really hard on myself and feeling down about it, especially when Etsy stats are right in front of you telling you what percentage you have dropped since the same time last year. I am guilty of comparing and always wanting them to be better than before - but of course that isn’t realistic and I have to remember that. I was thinking no-one else was in the same boat and, it’s unfortunate to say, but it’s actually comforting to see it isn’t just me and something I am doing wrong. I am of course still extremely grateful for the sales that I do get (they still pay the bills and allow me to keep doing what I love), but I am in the same boat with wanting to purchase my first house with my boyfriend and feel like I’m holding us back with being ‘self-employed’ and also not being able to save as much money recently. Thanks to your little chat I now don’t feel so down about the situation. I hope everyone else experiencing this low will come back from it as strong as ever and I wish you all the very best!

I appreciate you sharing this video. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one experiencing slow business. I think my sales usually dip in the summer normally, but I honestly have never noticed it before because I always sell at cons during the summer. Since the summer cons I attend are closed, I am stuck with online sales only so I finally noticed this dip. It definitely has given me time to catch up on work and develop some new product lines. My store has been really struggling this year compared to last and it's been so disheartening as I decreased my main job hours so I can focus on my art and shop. I'm glad to hear that it's not just me or a few smaller artist friends. I was prepared for first quarter of the year to be really quiet and was fine but now its mid year its still hasnt gotten better.

My husband and I have owned a circus school in the US for the last 8 years, and we’ve definitely seen our ups and down. Over the years, we’ve learned to do our best not to focus too much on searching for a pattern of the “downs” as that will drive you crazy. Small business is unpredictable and as we like to say “the world doesn’t want you to have a small business” (in reference to how difficult it can be; taxes, permits, labor laws, etc). Focus on the “ups” and branching out into new successes just like you’re doing. That’s worked for us, and I hope it will work for you, too. From our circus business, we’ve spun off a fitness software business, rigging consulting business, and circus merchandise business. When we aren’t having success in one arena, it helps to focus on another side hustle that’s fresh and fun compared to the original main business. Wishing you the best and many successes 🌸🌸🌸

To add a slightly different perspective, I work in retail in the outdoor industry and this is a trend we see as well! Spring/early summer is the slow season for most retail companies, so it makes sense that this is so for small businesses, too. It happens to us all - even the big guys!

Just an idea, during this time you could maybe pick up filming packing orders again! i feel like you havent done that in a while, so the orders you do get, you could start adding back into the vlog segments b/c people find those really satisfying :) also I think there's nothing wrong with a break and Its relieving to see you take it from different angles and stay motivated. In my personal experience, I tend to compare myself to other friends' business, whether its just hobbies or full fledged businesses. if they seem to be gaining more attention and wants for their product, it gets to me if I havent had a lot of inquiries. So it helps to learn not to compare so much to another businesses journey. I think your videos definitely help that for some of us.

Its definitly because people can't wait to get out and shop. I've seen so much people buying (and dangerously driving) and the retail store I work in the sales are up! so I think people just burnt out with online in general. once the temp gets cooler, people will be back online. As for me, seems my art just never really took off for my own business but for some reason sells well once it sits in stores.

I’m also a KZbinr and was making really good money a couple months ago from KZbin and I got sooo exited! All of the sudden everything dropped KZbin, sales, social media, everything! I’ve been selling online since 2010 and this always happens in the summer for me and usually picks up in October but it’s still scary and I feel insecure sometimes too. I did loose everything in 2017 due to Etsy closing my shop after 7 years of selling! But that’s another story (a very long one) Keep your head up and keep creating we will survive! Ignore if you already do any of these but what about planning for a baby (scans, trimesters, due dates…) also educational stickers - revision time, exams, etc. Also self care stickers - meditation, going out for walks, drink water, gratitude. An appointments set - nails, hair, lashes, opticians, dr, dentist, general beauty salon… 🥰 xxx

Thanks for sharing your struggle. It’s soooo important. I’ve been Etsy for about 5 years and was making a pretty good living off it. Since December (which should have been the busy month) my shop has been dying for some reason. This month I’m at around 3 orders!? So I’m just about to give up. I started a KZbin/Twitch channel and I’m considering other options. It sucks but honestly I’m tired of putting effort into a website that isn’t “mine” and I have to fight with algorithms all the time. It’s important to know that your Etsy shop can tank at any time for a number of reasons so its crucial to diversify and have other income streams! I’m certain things will pick up for you though! Your work brings so much joy :)

I recently went through a pretty bad depressive episode (thank you Ontario lockdowns) and for about 3 months I was only doing the bare minimum for my shop, yet I kept receiving orders. Now that I'm feeling more myself again and I'm finally able to actually make new products and spend time on my business consistently I think I'm finally feeling the effects of not being able to work for a while and my sales have dropped off steeply, and it's TERRIFYING. I keep telling myself that the sales will pick back up again soon, I just have to keep working at it, but it's hard to keep going when you're doubting yourself so much. But seeing this video come up right when I'm struggling so much to keep going was really helpful and inspirational! I also know stores are opening up again all around the world so that probably also has something to do with it, not only for me but for lots of small business owners. We all just need to keep going!

yes it definately can hinder your creativity, thats why its best to try and not focus on the negative, and see the positives in it being temporarily slow; you can now focus your energy on Projects and tasks that were on the back burner, YOU GOT THIS!

Oh Catherine you're such an inspiration. Ah Im glad to see you doing what you have to do not only to be happy but for your mental well being. Also coming up with your best ideas is when you have down time at times. I am going through the same thing. Consulting work is hard though I have secular jobs I hope to drop one of them be pt and work on my business too. I’ve been in business almost four years. I’m glad I saw this. Also I have similar cups they are so cute mine are just regular from crate and barrel. I also need the reminder to clean lol swifter! I use the swifter duster one too. In my planner I have a regular and work one. Like meeting. Check email, update schedule. Personally doctors, wash clothes, buy cat food.

Yes I’ve had a bit of a dip in my shops too, thankfully I have some wholesale orders to keep me going. I wasn’t open last year, so I doesn’t feel strange to me to have a dip now - like you I usually have a dip in the summer months, and use the time to prep for Christmas! Actually the thing I do keep selling in the summer (and have had some orders for over the last week or so) is wedding stuff, badges and favours - maybe you could add some wedding gifts to baby blu? I think people are excited at the moment to have weddings back on, even if they are smaller than planned. X

I don't have Instagram or tiktok... so I thought I'd take a chance and post some sticker ideas here: workout (walking, running, cycling, leg day, core day, arm day... etc). Mental health or self love, birthdays, vet or pet care (walking, bathing, shots... etc.). Hanging with friends (girls night, family night, game night, etc). I have to comment because the strangest (most delightful) thing happened while watching this video. I have been experiencing a drop in sales in my Etsy shop as well. It's not my full income but more of a side hobby that I hope to grow. I've been struggling to do more things to help my shop but when things are like this I start to doubt my art and if people are really liking what I'm creating. But as I was commenting here I just received a notification that I had a sale (yay)! It's been a few weeks so I'm SO happy. It feels like validation. It's been rough and I do feel that with things opening back up, it's causing things to slow down for online shops but I'm glad to see I'm not alone and I appreciate you sharing with us. Hopefully as the real world starts to come back to life, things settle in for online creators and start to pick back up also.

We have seen a slow down too! And we do the same thing, checking the numbers and our products etc but it's really that seasonal shift we see in the summer and we just have to remind ourselves of that! You're so right to suggest taking down times to focus on things you had not been able to do when you are busier. Hugs and *insert pastel hearts here* I'm on my laptop :)
