There is a lot of conflicting and confusing advice out there for actors. Just because the acting advice comes from an “industry professional” doesn’t necessarily mean it is advice you should take to heart. In this video Pro Acting Coach and Studio 24 Owner, Cody Dorkin, breaks down advice that could potentially make or break your career.

Disagree with that last piece of advice. Not because you shouldn't be the best at what you do. But because it can create a dangerous head game. You will never get every role. You will get what you were meant to get. In the end, no matter how skilled you are, you have a unique vibe that will make you perfect for the role or not. The attitude you suggest puts the onus on things you have no control over and I think undermines your ability to do your best work. By saying I am competing, you are setting yourself up for results that you can't control! Just have high standards for yourself and what you offer. Focus on the scene and the goals of the character. That is the only thing you have control over.

Love this video and so true with first one, and I’m currently saving money for my next headshots and focus on character types. But one of my friend said that’s so cheesy and not authentic. I replied back, “Well at least the casting director will have quicker time to find me and offer auditions.” 💯

I think the key with the competition one is really you can see them as competition but don't treat them like competition. I find that advice generally comes from a place of "don't be difficult to work with, egotistical" etc.

Love the video and this discussion. I believe having a self-tape style clip is a great PLACEHOLDER UNTIL you get professional footage.

@@ronstevens8289 A "self-tape" that is a sample of your work in lieu of professional footage can be shot with an iPhone set to horizontal with a solid non distracting background. It can be a previous auditon that you have ... or even a monologue. Hope that helps!

Having actors be your competition. To a degree I agree. But this can also perpetuate toxic relationships enviroments. some people will take competition as a threat, so they’re way of being will be a survival based life. You can have competition and be your best every time, without making people who are the same field and who look like you , your enemy. Abundance mindset, always be your absolute best, let that be yourself expression.

Here in Italy, and i think in general, at a certain point you need only one thing: *lucky* . You can have everything perfect but this is not enough. In Italy now there is this trend of casting director's workshop where a lot, and I mean a lot of actors pay lot of money and go with the hope of being remembered..is this correct? Not here to judge.😐 By the way, I agree with what you say and I try to apply your advice. Thank you so much!

Luck favors the prepared. We have laws in California that prevent "pay to play" workshops. Casting Director workshops can be beneficial for a lot of reasons, but you don't want actors paying for opportunities.

If a brand new actor is starting out his career and doesn't have professional material for a reel, but he gets an important audition where they ask for it, shouldn't he send the best takes he has, even if it looks amateur? In my opinion that's better than seeing nothing... because at least it shows that he can act

I'd love to hear your thoughts on doing background as a side job to earn money. I heard it can limit your auditions because CDs will only see you as background. Question is, how does a CD even know if someone's doing background? Thank you
@RjTheGenius
@RjTheGenius 6 ай бұрын
Hey I can actually answer this. So casting directors can tell whether something is background work through your IMDB page and whether a role is “uncredited”. I’ve had casting directors give me mixed info on this, but generally, if all you’re doing is submitting for background, you’ll mostly be considered for background roles. But if you’re just starting out, you should definitely try and get into background work as well as submitting yourself for shorts so you can have a mix on your IMDb credits. That way, CDs can see that you’re a versatile actor and that you’re just starting out but are looking for speaking roles. Also, background is a great way to get your union membership as well. Hope this helps.

CDs wouldn't know you have done any background work if it's not on your resume, which it shouldn't be, so that won't be an issue for you. I would agree with @RjTheGenius, background can be a great way to become union eligible, especially if that union work is in a market outside of Los Angeles.

Can you tell me how people actually get the opportunity to cast/audition for any role? Like how do they know there is a certain role to play? Can anyone know there is a free role or is it cause of their connections? Thanks in advance.

You can find roles through actorsaccess.com castingnetworks.com and backstage.com . To get the big union auditions, you would need to get a talent agent to represent you theatrically.
