use fusible interfacing on the back of the zip tape to stop fraying.

This has happened to me on a wash bag but it was a rainbow zip teeth. Not sure if I snipped into it too far. But I couldn’t rectify it as it was fraying too much it came out of the main fabric and lining. I was so annoyed as I used a beautiful waterproof canvas which wasn’t cheap. Definitely something to check the zips before your project. Thank you for the tip.
@Studio7t78 ай бұрын
oh no! Was it a striped zipper also? Yes if you snip too far in you could have the same issue so definitely be wary of how far you cut
@susanjenningsjones8 ай бұрын
@@Studio7t7 I think I was snipping too far was the issue and didn’t know it would fray. It wasn’t a stripy zip, just a navy with rainbow teeth

Thank you for the video. I have some zipper tape like that and have been afraid to use it. I'll just use it on a straight area vs a curved area.

Def use it - but like you say on straight over curved areas :)

I have some of this tape and will be getting rid of it. I have seen some people have issues with it without snipping into it and I don’t think it is worth the risk. Bummer, I really like the look.

I wonder if the magnets are strong enough to hold the straps/handles in place when the bag becomes heavy with stuff, especially for a fairly spacious bag like that, that can carry a lot of things inside... I would be a bit nervous to carry my electronics in there if the handles can snip off due to the weight...
@Studio7t78 ай бұрын
This is a common worry. Even if they do, due to how they are fixed they physically can’t come out of the d rings. I explain more on the video here; kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYuwdYBmpr9nm5osi=sf21D_3dQ7sYmUZ1

Snipping into zipper tape is just asking for trouble. I made the shark for my grandson and didn’t snip the zip at all. It went round the curve perfectly.

Interesting bag. I might try it. Just wondering why you used magnets instead of snaps for the straps. I would think the snaps are sturdier than the magnets. Thanks in advance for your consideration of this question. Thanks for the tip!
@Studio7t78 ай бұрын
Thanks so glad you like it. You can use snaps instead of magnets - totally choice but I’ve found them to be fine. You can see the full video with explanation here; kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYuwdYBmpr9nm5osi=dbI5XJ5F1q-ZBT-v

I think using an iron on adhesive on the zipper fabric would *save* it from fraying into uselessness

Can you tell me if and or how I can hack the Maggie switch to fit on the back of my wee mobility scooter
@Studio7t78 ай бұрын
For that, you can adjust the straps so that they go from the centre back to the side d rings - I think that would work well? But not having a mobility scooter to hand im not sure - are backpacks usually good or no?
@megfreeth43778 ай бұрын
I think if you have the straps vertical on each side you could do a horizontal restraining strap to slot onto the straps to hold it in place. I did this for one I made for my scooter and it works really well.
@malley47473 ай бұрын
No zipper tape should ever be cut on the sides.
@Studio7t73 ай бұрын
I’ve cut many zips before to go around curves with no issues and have been sewing for 25 years professionally. But having said that if there are more tapes we need to be aware of as it’s happened to you please do let us know.

Do you ever say the brand or type of it to avoid? I am too new to differentiate
@Studio7t78 ай бұрын
There isn’t really a brand to avoid it’s more this type of zipper tape
@shalomkiwi20067 ай бұрын
Can you use a cigarette lighter to melt the snipped areas? It reminds me of grosgrain ribbon that unravels after being sewn into things, unless you singe/melt the raw edges of the ribbon first.
@Studio7t77 ай бұрын
Yes that’s true it’s very similar! You could try that but I’m not sure it would be tough enough? Normally yes but this tape really does kind of disintegrate
