THE ANATOMY OF A SCREENPLAY
The screenplay is a medium every knows but there is a lot more going on in this form than people realize. In this video, we’re going to look at the history of the screenplay, movie script format and why it’s important, and some creative exceptions that push the artform forward.
ELEMENTS OF A FILM SCRIPT
There are six basic elements in the anatomy of a film script and their format and function is 99% consistent from script to script. These include the scene heading, action/description, character, dialogue, parentheticals, and transitions. Scene headings denote the location and time of day a scene takes place, as well as whether it is an interior or exterior scene. The action/description provides all the non-dialogue storytelling - introducing characters, describing the action from beat to beat, etc. Character cues mark a specific character’s dialogue, which can be augmented with parentheticals for more direction on the delivery of the dialogue. And finally, transitions can be included to mark the definition switch between scenes, especially if that switch contains relevant storytelling material.
THE PURPOSE OF MOVIE SCRIPT FORMAT
The reason why movie script format is so uniform goes back to the days when making movies was more like a factory assembly line. This allows ADs and producers to accurately estimate critical information like budget and schedule. On average, each page of properly formatted script equals a minute of screentime. That page is then divided into 1/8ths to schedule each shooting day.
For beginning writers, it is important to follow these “rules” because the people who decide whether to buy and/or produce your script expect “professionalism” and something familiar they can recognize an assess. If you hand in a script that follows none of these rules, your chances of it being read passed page one are slim to none.
You might have the best idea for a script but unless you understand the anatomy of a screenplay and the in’s and out’s of movie script format, it might never see the light of day.

I don't see how this would be illegal. They are paying for the rights to share the content from the videos they are referencing and they are showing industry standard practices not proprietary practices. When I was young I was overwhelmed by the enormity of two things: (A) learning to write in the framework of a screenplay and (B) thinking of anything to write about in the first place. This is truly a gold mine of knowledge. I think most of us understand a screenplay. I know how to write it and yet i found many details tht explain the why of things instead of just the use. Great video on screenplays/scripts. The more I practice script writing, the more I learn. StudioBinder has been invaluable in my education and execution of bringing my ideas to film. One thing I want to point out and I heard this mentioned by another noted scriptwriter, when you write a script, it is different from writing a novel. Aside from writing your scenes in the present tense, the descriptions of the scene have to be short, but descriptive enough for production to assemble the scene. Additionally, turning a book or comic book into a script is a daunting task. How to include enough dialogue, scenes and plots to make an effect adaptation without loosing the core fan-base and still preserving the essence of the story? I think that would be a good follow up to this video, having a samples of movies adapted from novels and seeing how they match up. Do they stay true to the content or do they miss the mark. I know personally as novel writer, I sometimes can over-describe a scene in my writing. But when it comes to translating it to filming script, I realize I need to take 3 pages and condense it to 3 sentences. But it is a learning curve I will master with unrelenting effort. Again, thanks for this informative video.

I understand that the broad aspects remain the same but I do hope you come up with a video about writing for a web series. That would be most helpfu. A fantastic handle that I'm surely going to recommend to my other author friends who aspire to write for screen.

As a beginning screenwriter and a long time creative writer I have been feeling unsure as to where I can put my own personality, vision, and humor into a script while not upsetting readers with "fluff" or being controlling of how other parts of the cast and crew adapt the script. I really appreciate the Creative Applications section of this video, though is there somewhere I can go for additional tips or a more in depth look into it?
