To put things in perspective for you: that "whiny, annoying" Aang is a 12 year old who has lost all the people he knew, he just recently found out that all of his friends and family where murdered in a genocide, and now his best friend, the one single friend that is left from his previous life is kidnapped too. Exactly! Appa and Aang are the only ones to survive a genocide. They are also other factors that would contribute to the intensity of Aang's feelings: In regards to being from a different time period. Although Bumi lived during that time period as well, Bumi's experience is uninterrupted so he has a better grasp of the present. Whereas for Aang, the difference from his time and the present is abrupt so although that although he can still establish meaningful relationships and he can assimilate, part of him will alway feel disconnected from the present day world so even Bumi would not be able to fully relate to how Aang feels. When Appa was taken, Aang lost the only one who can truly understand him so now he feels alone. In terms of emotional development, people typically have the most difficulty with these types of huge life changes from around 12 and into the teenage years. Children tend to pick up a new culture much more easily because they are at the age where they are normally learning about cultural norms and adults tend to have a better developed repertoire of coping strategies established and better developed emotional management skills. Also, keep in mind that we've never even seen Aang have a chance to properly grieve for the loss of his people and basically everyone he loved (save Appa) and he still blames himself to some extent for their loss and the war so it's likely that those feelings are still unresolved but up to now, he's still managed to cope and thus it hasn't disrupted his ability to function. We often assume that because someone presents well, it means they're fine now but on the inside either consciously or unconsciously that that may not be the case. It is likely that when Appa is taken, this new overwhelming rush of emotions would actually compound with his still unresolved emotions thus leading to him unravelling. I would also like take this chance to explain that some people are upset by the harsh response to Aang's reaction because this is the type of stigma and dismissiveness that people with a history of trauma and people with mental illness have to deal with in real life. It's like when someone tells a person who experienced trauma just to "get over it already" or someone says to a person experiencing clinical depression to "stop being lazy". Not only does saying those type of things show a complete lack of understanding about how those conditions work but it is also wholly unhelpful to the person or their situation and in fact, may even aggravate their symptoms (i.e. telling someone to "get over it" doesn't help them resolve their issues but it might make things worse for them).

Someone already mentioned that Aang is trying to cope with losing his lifelong friend, buy to add to that... It's important to recognize that Aang is basically going through the stages of grief right now. It's a very normal thing to act "irrationally" when you're grieving. The things you do and say are not who you really are.

Also: he's 12. And he had recently learned his entire nation and culture had been wiped out. I appreciate how realistic it is that a 12-year-old who's been raised by monks to achieve spiritual enlightenment is more mature than an average 12-year-old, but he's still only 12.

You guys have to understand that that to Aang, Appa is more than just a pet or a friend. For everyone else in the gang, Appa is just that, a pet/friend. But to Aang, Appa and Momo, especially Appa is THE only thing left from his time and childhood. The one semblance of home and his culture. Not to mention he's just a 12 year old kid, that sort of reaction is a given. In fact its actually more surprising how he didn't breakdown even more. Plus we've all seen bits and pieces of Aang being very overprotective over Appa (when Toph blamed Appa for his shedding fur of giving away their location to Azula, and Aang suddenly became very angry and yelled at Toph etc.) It's easy to point fingers and side against someone, as such its important to have sympathy and desire to understand others.

No, it’s not justified lmao. People really need to separate understandable from justified. Understandable, yes, obviously. He’s the only airbender left, and the only living connection he has to his people and culture was taken from him. Justified? Not at all. Blaming the person who saved your life for being put in a traumatic situation of choosing you over Appa is not justifiable. Demeaning and belittling the work Katara is doing to keep everyone moving and alive is not justifiable. People can and should be irritated at Aang.

@@NobodyXChallengerYT Nobody said that he wasn’t being irritating, and yes his actions are understandable which is why one can justify them if they empathize with him as a character. Obviously the girls don’t deserve to be treated like that, and Aang wasn’t being fair to them here - but notice how even “super headstrong/won’t let anybody walk all over her” Toph beifong doesn’t fight Aang back for his accusations. Aang accused her of all kinds of things, and instead of arguing back, toph just said she tried to save him and left it at that. She kept quiet cz she recognized that his anger was at himself and not truly at her. Katara tried to get through his grief with logic, reasoned that they can’t find Appa if they can’t make it out the desert first, and reminded him of the importance of sticking together, while also giving him space to wind down and eventually break down. Being ready to comfort him when he did. Even the scene where he creates a wind storm, parallels what happened when he found Gyatsos corpse at the southern air temple. It’s a direct parallel to that moment showing that the loss of Appa came from the same source of pain, was the same level of intensity for him as the death of his entire race. That’s why katara and toph didn’t fight back when aang was being a jerk. The show wants us to emphasize with these characters, whether they make good choices or bad ones. I mean just look at how it presented Zukos character arc. Same level of internal turmoil and lack of coping skills and lashing out to people who want to help yet unable to find inner peace due to his own grief. Over losing his mother, his title, his honor. For azula too. She’s a complete psychopath who’s done evil thing yet we still empathize with her and want her to heal and be loved. You’re not meant to think these characters are all perfect, moral goody goodies. They can be annoying, and they can make the wrong choices repeatedly, but that doesn’t take away from their importance as people or their individual arcs. Even a character like aang who is meant to be this perfect figurehead a creator of peace, the avatar, with strong values and moral code, is still shown as someone who makes mistakes, and yes sometimes those mistakes are irritating to watch him make. But he’s still important, not because he’s the avatar but because he’s Aang. Scars and naivety and goofy smiles and all. Just yet another kid trying to find his own way in this war.

Also a little thing I noticed and loved was the fact that despite lashing out at Toph earlier, Aang instantly believed her when she pointed out that it was Ghashiun who stole Appa. Despite initially blaming her and being angry, Aang still trusts Toph without hesitation!

I remember how back then, the TV episodes wouldn’t air in order of how they were released and for the longest time I didn’t know what happened to Appa, so I just remember watching the episodes without him, when he was taken away, when Aang was Aangry (sorry I had to), when the guys were fighting the drill and going into Ba Sing Se, all without Appa, and for the longest time I thought “that’s it, we won’t see Appa no more”. And then, the showrunners had the AUDACITY to dedicate an entire episode to him being mistreated, broken, and abused, and I remember just being perpetually sad, not knowing what to do myself, wanting to help him. I don’t even remember him being reunited with the gaang because of, again, the release order, so whenever I rewatch these episodes I go back to the same feeling I had as a child of just missing Appa so much, which is why “Appa’s lost days” is probably my top 5 episodes cuz it just breaks me every time I watch it Glad that there are people who probably share the same feelings

@@kkuwura I didn't know that they didn't air in order the episodes of Appa's disappearance based on your experience, because in my country way back 2008 or 2009, the show was aired on free TV and was also dubbed in our language. I remember they showed everything especially the kidnapping part of Appa and I remember the feeling of being anxious, stressed, and not feeling okay when the Gaang was left in the desert without any idea on what to do to retrieve Appa back. As a kid I wasn't prepared for that because back then I only expect happy moments and victory of the Gaang.

I don’t think he was being as whiny as you’re making him out to be. The kid just found out he lost all of his culture a few months ago after waking up from the iceberg he was in for 100 years. Couple that with the guilt he carries that he wasn’t there when his people died, it’s understandable that he would lash out when one of the only things left from his culture is taken, not to mention his best friend. He’s a kid as well and it’s not easy to regulate your emotions in that situation. It’s irrational, sure, but within the context of Aang’s arc, it makes complete sense

Plenty of people have remarked on why Aang is way past ornery. He lost part of himself. The reason they didn't create a land bridge or ice bridge instead of going under the Serpent's Pass was because they were still trying to sneak past Fire Nation ships. A mild disturbance illicited an immediate attack on them. Stealth was a great idea. They had no way to know about the serpent.

Aang is a 12 year old who is the lone survivor of genocide, something that he has never really stopped to grieve for. On top of which, he has the weight of the world on his shoulders. He has been keeping his feelings bottled up inside and hiding it behind a jolly faced mask. Losing Appa was the straw that broke the camels back, and he exploded. Would that be classified as a little annoying and unproductive, yes, but it is entirely understandable and expected of Aang to act this way. The Desert beautifully showcases the quote "Good men don't need rules. Today is not the day to find out why I have so many." because when you think about it, Aang's anger is a core part of his personality. He constantly gets overly emotional but it makes sense with all the pressure on him. He snaps quite a bit in the series, and it always grinds my gears to see people completely mischaracterize him as the ALWAYS happy chipper one. That's just a mask at some points. Such as in The Serpent's Pass when he tried numbing himself to emotion. People in that universe should be THANKFUL that Aang is a naturally kind person, because if he were more like Kyoshi...those Sandbenders would be bloodstains.

I skipped around through this reaction and the others I’ve seen before now so I’m glad I missed that. Not sure what the anger was about on their part to be honest, sounds a bit strange. What got me was the women’s total disregard for Aang’s turmoil at losing the last piece of his culture from his past. All I did was empathize with this distressed kid even back when I first watched the show as a kid myself, maybe rewatches without a camera might help them? All I know is them spouting the tired “man up” comments had to feel great for all the guys sitting there genuinely caring and showing basic empathy themselves. Glad I saw this show as it aired and internalized the many great lessons it imparted on to those watching at such a young age. I truly think this and many other shows and real life actions taught me that showing care is okay.

@@darylesells19 This show’s writing far exceeded its creators even. Almost like they struck self-sustaining gold. The story and characters naturally breathe life and lesson to itself. And a lot of people, especially if they’re a younger generation that’s already a young adult or late teen by now, will probably still love the show but overlook the nuances. It’s funny because “man up” is anti-progressive but coming from the “progressive” group. Seems I see this type of contradiction a lot these days but this is the preset of beliefs we’re supposed to follow according to what’s automatically determined and accepted by government and media. Not trying to get all political or anything like that. I’m super neutral/independent, but that’s just the situation we’re in and it’s only more obvious because of how it effects this franchise little by little as time passes with Korra then with the new show and how people react to the original show which is just a hair away from being perfect if not already perfect.

It's super easy to blame Aang for his actions in the Desert, but you have to realize that he's dealing with possibly losing one of his final connections to his previous life, and his best friend, forever. He's going to be irrational, he's going to fly off to try and find Appa himself, he's going to be irritable and moody, just like anyone else would be when dealing with that kind of loss in an incredibly stressful and dangerous situation.

It's always nice to know that it's okay for the Cabbage Man to have a mental breakdown after his 30th cart is destroyed but Aang was out of line in his behavior for losing his oldest friend in the same day with zero time passing between episodes. Really good to know that. Hopefully, honestly, nothing similar ever happens to you else you might find yourself a bit hypocritical in your actions.

Man.... I can't even imagine how I'd feel to have my cat or my dog be stolen from me. I would be devastated, angry, worried and a bunch of bad emotions. I can't even imagine the grief that Aang went through knowing that Appa, who is not just a pet but the first friend he has ever had and the one remaining living relative from his past, has been stolen. The fear of not knowing how your loved one is after they were kidnapped is enough to kill you with dread. Are they okay? Are they alive? Are they being mistreated? Are they hurting? Those thousands of questions that never leave your mind weigh you down as you desperately search for them... Appa's disappearance was probably one of the most painful and grieving thing that I have ever watched as a kid. The story writing did so well portraying such loss and grief in a way that children can understand and sympathize.

I just processed something, I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say. During the Serpents Pass they leave Toph on her lil island to follow them instead of taking her hand , likely forgetting she can’t see on ice (the desert was such a fluke in her ability to see,) and from this point on in the show you see Sokka and Toph practically glued to each other in dangerous situations, with Toph either holding Sokka’s arm or him taking her hand when they need to run. Sokka probably feels some guilt about not jumping in immediately like Suki did, and makes a point to be close to Toph whenever he can to prevent her from being stranded again. Just a theory, but entirely plausible.

One of my favorite things about this show is how realistically it portrays people and characters. Aang is a twelve year old kid who grew up in a time of peace. He then wakes up one day to find everyone he knew, his entire culture, is dead. The world is now at war, and he is responsible to fix it. Oh, and he has to learn the other three elements - which usually takes like 10-15 years - and fight and defeat the Fire Lord in less than a year. Considering the culmination of waking up in a whole different world, dealing with such great personal loss, and the pressure of expectation put upon him, it’s incredible that Aang is able to still be his usual positive, joyful, caring self at all. Losing Appa was the last straw. The last connection he had to his old life and his best friend. A person can only handle so much loss, and Aang was already at his breaking point. Sure, Aang is being unreasonable, but that’s how a real person would respond to the situation. Misdirected anger is 100% a realistic response for Aang to have. I’m not saying it is right, or that it’s fair to the rest of the group. It’s something he has to work through, and thankfully Katara understands. She knows who Aang really is, where he’s coming from, and what this loss means to him. She knows Aang’s true character and loves him enough to stay by his side and support him as he’s working through some really hard emotions. Having to work on yourself and grow through your mistakes is part of life. I’m so happy they didn’t make Aang a perfect character who never made mistakes or had to grow. And it’s true for every character on this show. Everyone has bad days, and the rest of the group has to pick up the slack. That’s part of what being a family is all about - supporting each other through the ups and downs, the mistakes and victories. Love is patient. Love is kind. Love covers a multitude of sins.

Guys, try to cut AANG some slack . He's a 12 year old. such a young kid with the such a big responsibility on his shoulders. Can you imagine being him? When you get attached to something or someone at that age and it's taken away from you it really does seem like the end of the world and you feel really sad for a time, but in this case as you have seen Aang's connection with Appa is very deep. Don't judge hum like you would judge normal adults. In fact, no one else in his situation would handle it well at all, he is doing great in my opinion. So please TRY to keep in mind he is a 12 YEAR OLD Right now, he is just like a younger brother/sister who has lost his best friend. Not only him, mostly all characters are kids so try not to judge them if they seem annoying sometimes. When I saw the episode , I was also annoyed by him. So, I understand your perspective. But when i thought about it, I kid of got where he was coming from. I would be worried if he did not feel this way. He is in such a tough situation right now, so please bear with him. Another great reaction guys! Thanks

I forgot to mention before, but when Iroh said "Hmm... friends who don't want to attack me..." It was played as a joke. But I immediately thought of what was hinted at later in the episode (except I forgot that it happened this episode, which confirms that the joke was referring to that) As for Aang, I always think it's funny people react to Aang like "Ugh, I get you're upset but you don't gotta act so damn upset". lol When people are upset, it's one thing. But when you're upset about something deep and personal, you are not in a normal state of mind. It doesn't mean he should be doing it, lashing out and such. But it's understandable why he is and, at least as a viewer, I wouldn't be mad at him for it. I'd just be sad for him and wait to see how he learns to cope with it. If we could all just control ourselves perfectly when intense emotions arise, we wouldn't be the flawed creatures we are.

I would agree Toph is a better candidate for beating the firelord at this moment because of her rock solid mental.
