Studiologic Numa X Piano 88, a flawed Stage Piano or the best Stage MIDI Controller

Studiologic finally did it: my dream Stage MIDI Controller. With my already mature setup for iPad, with so many great App's available, simple one cable USB connection working flawlessly, the Numa X 88 is probably the only solution available at any price point. Why?
-Audio and MIDI interface via USB; Standard MIDI; 4 channel mixer; Pitch and modulation sticks; aftertouch; 14 kgs with metal construction; space for two iPads on top, magnetically attached; Enough assignable knobs and pedals; all in a 88 keys keyboard, while not being the best, works wonderfully for me ( perfect dynamics, heavy weight keys but nimble for fast passages, fast repetitions and allowing for piano and organ style glissandos ).
Of course, it has a lot of flaws, especially in the sounds department. But who cares, they’re there just in case.
My edits for Vintage Grand
-Tone 67; String Res 48; Duplex 32; Ped.Noise 56
-IFX A: Equalizer P1 69; P2 64; P3 65
- Master reverb- Room 1 send 18, P1 60, P2 30, P3 30. Enjoy!

This is the most honest and incredibly knowledgeable review of a digital/stage piano. You pointed out things that most reviewers have absolutely no clue about. First time I heard a numa I was wondering what was wrong. Most reviewers just play through stuff, but you, you actually stop and fully inspect the why’s and how’s of what’s really going on. The best Sit👏👏 I wish every “reviewer on KZbin” had a little bit of your hands experience. The Roland FP series also have the same exact gimmicks and behaves the same, this “resonance, duplex string, release” are just hidden dsp effects and the supernatural is certainly a filter.

Acoustic piano tech here (35yrs in industry). I play digital pianos on stage sometimes and have never really found a digital piano to make me go “WOW!” …I’m still waiting. Your review is excellent and shows a level of understanding of traditional piano behaviour that is missing in most other reviews, bravo! Whilst I’m not sold on the NumaX, I’m quite impressed at the number of issues SL have addressed well, I don’t need to reiterate, you noticed them! There’s just the one thing that stops me from going out and buying one as a stage instrument… that issue where raising the key from the bed by just 1mm causes the note to be damped. In a real piano, this would be between 4-6mm depending on the technician who regulated it and the age of and the wear in the action. A small thing for some but a a deal breaker for me. Keep up the good work!

Thank you Tim, for validating my points! My tech needy part never really shuts off, even when I just want to connect to the artistic part😅Did you the Numa X yourself? It is mostly noticeable when your fingers are deep into the keys. Maybe not a problem at all for some, and a minor ( but still annoying ) one for me.

I got one, had to send it back. One key wasn't firing when I got to escapement, had to press it extra hard, unlike any other key. Reported it, they tried to tell me that was normal/expected. Didn't offer to repair or replace. Very disappointed with their attempted gaslighting. Got a casio px-s6000 instead. Much happier, slimmer, and zero keybed issues

You must be talking about Numa X GT. My review is about the Numa X 88, with the TP110 keybed, it doesn't have escapment . And mine is absolutelly fine since I bought it. Anyway, if that really happened to you, I agree, it's not right to treat a paying costumer like that, I would do the same, shouting out how bad their service is. I never had to deal with them, so personally I don't have an opinion.

You made the best review for this piano! I really wish you made plenty of them! You're honest, you're smart, you're precise, and there's no BS sponsored by anything. I was looking for reviews about keybeds and, mostly, about Roland A-88 mkII vs Studiologic SL88 Grand, and all I could find were the videos of that one guy, who's very interesting but absolutely subjective and doesn't go at all into details about the keybeds, he just prefers one and skips to other criteria... :( Years after the release of the SL88 Grand, it appears that even if the feel of their keybed is (objectively or subjectively) good, the overall build and the factory checks are bad, and I've found hundreds and hundreds of testimonials of people disappointed, with a broken SL88 in their hands, after less than a year and sometimes several replacements. I'm going for the more durable Roland. Something interesting that I found was that unless you're a pianist and trying to record piano sessions or on a gig, mostly you don't need the absolute best keybed for a midi controller. Just a decent, durable one that has a good level of sensitivity. Which makes light digital pianos, and the A-88, more than ok. Your analysis is amazing, because you bring important and detailed elements of the experience, and you also bring good ideas. Thank you! Nota: the Roland PHA-50 keybed does the same thing as you showed (captors under the hammer, glissando more natural, can be triggered with one shallow hit), you find it on DP-603 and more recent models.
@FaustoFerreira

Thank you! Agree with all that, except… If you are using a keyboard that is uncomfortable for you, that’s going to negatively influence your performance. No, you don’t always need the absolute best, but a good tool nonetheless, that allows you to express yourself fluently, with proper technique. About reliability, well, we will have to wait a few years.

This review is awesome! Just my take if you may, I think some of the things addressed can be resolved on a quick dive on the settings like the resonance, ped noise, etc. concerns. However, i would like to agree that the chorus inserts are a bit crappy. Also, i’m with you on selecting the sound. No numbers to quickly dial a particular sound. Last thing, I wish the studiologic did what modern brands do, to allow the sound to continue while changing the sound pages for a seamless transition.

Thank you! That's just my point, you don't have enough to dive in! Especially if some things are wrongly implemented without a chance to adjust. Seamless transition seems to be the norm these days. But pair the Numa with the best software, Pc, Mac or iOS, and you kick every other keyboards ass!

Thank you! Downloaded and tryed them all. They are very specific: B211 is soft and softer towards the treble, bordering out of tune; C-183 Japan is just too bright; felt piano is just that, felt; A. Forster 1914 sounds like an old piano. None of them offers full dynamic range, nor release samples like the ones found on the internal samples. What they call Acoustic Modeling technology is just fancy words for a smart filter and some ( bad quality ) reverb like resonances. None of them are trully versatile pianos, with full dynamic range and balanced from bass ro treble. The internal sounds make a much better job at that. If I need a character instrument, I have much better places to look for that. Thats what I was saying in the video: give us less strange things, and one or two higher quality pianos, with full range dynamics and this would be not only an excelent controller but also an amazing stage piano.

The Yamaha P 525 (new Grand Touch S keybed, quite a difference with the older P515 keybed)was the winner for me in terms of touch and playing experience, the best stage piano keybed I ever played, but it has no pitch bend controls and mediocre extra sounds. . Unfortunatelly even other very interesting propositions miss the modulation/pitch wheels. Kawai Mp7SE is getting old now, still amazing keyboard, good piano sounds ( Mp11se is not portable at all ) Other choices: Kurzweil Sp7 Grand, Dexibell Vivo S10... and that's it:( for keyboards combining Mod/pitch wheel, good controller capabilities, low weight, good keyboard action, and acceptable piano sounds, that doesn't look and feels like a toy. The Numa X ticks all of the boxes, being one of the lightest and more affordable of this short list. If you find out something I don't, please let me know! Merry christmas!

Like many of the comments above and below me, Mr. Ferreira, this review is absolutely wonderful. I'm very impressed with how you dive into the details of the market talk "acoustic modelling technology with realistic sympathetic resonance" and show that it's nonsense and especially helpful for people like myself who almost never played a real grand piano. I remember looking at this board and thinking that because the keys are not graded, it's going to be a problem, but it seems that even for you, it's the least of your worries, so I wonder how do you compare this to (I know I sound silly doing this but do forgive me) a P-125 (GHS) action? It's the action I know best (because I've played it for quite a while), and I haven't had a chance to play other weighted actions (That's somewhat of a lie, I've played a Nord Piano 5, and that action there, not sure what it is, but it is super amazing, but I only played it for about 20 minutes in the shop when they allowed me to). I feel maybe faders would work better than rotary encoders, it's probably just me, but maybe the encoders are inspired by the Nord keyboards. Again, great video, looking forward to other videos you make!
@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for your words! The P125 feels more plasticy in the sense that you feel more artificial tension than real mass inertia, which is what you get with the Numa X. Of course there's much more than that, but you have to wait for my next video!

19:00 very interesting you've already noticed that, it's actually one of the many reasons I've returned my X GT and replaced by the FP90x, the PHA50 behaves better for piano playing IMO, also I've found whites and blacks are better balanced in the latter despite having the same pivot length almost. Sounds are kinda poor also, but that's secondary for me since I wanted it as a MIDI controller mainly. Thanks for the nice and honest review btw

Thank you! In fact, just changing the positioning of the sensors makes a big diference. Maybe putting the sensors over the hammer stick instead of under the keys adds a bit of construction complexity, but Kawai did it in the medium range MP7SE and others. And Nord adopted it for its flagship piano, Nord Grand! ( with some modifications, mainly removing the escapment and giving it a hard bottom.

Best review I've seen on this! One thing I've always found missing from digital piano reviews though is comparing the midi response between keyboards. The keys on every digital piano are ultimately generating values between 0 and 127 to simulate the "velocity" of a hammer strike on a real piano. And then that 7-bit value is fed to a synthesizer to make a sound. So it's really among the most critical features and functions of any digital piano, and yet it rarely gets more than cursory attention. Every digital piano goes about this differently, and many don't even hit all 128 values! It would be nice to see a head-to-head between keyboards with their midi-outs plugged into midi monitor software (there are many free ones) to see how well, and under what conditions, they trigger those 128 values.
@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira 7 ай бұрын
Thank you! What I've seen in other reviews is that the keyboard response is allways treated with subjective or simplistic terms: like/dislike ; heavy/light; escapment/no escapment; balanced/unbalenced. While in the end it is allways a subjective affair, I tryed to bring some objectiveness to the table, specifically the characteristics that allows us to use proper piano technics. I've done those Midi tests. While Midi range is only 7 bits, 128 values ( including 0 ), the velocity gathered originaly from the keyboard is unlimited , it is the translation, or velocity curve that can go wrong. The problem is that most velocity curves are presets, with simple options like light/medium/heavy. The curves should allow for more complex editing, as diferent software/modules respond diferentely. Thankfully, Numa X has a further value editing for adjusting sensitivity, and comes allready very well balanced on the majority of the software I use. My usual setting is SOFT/ KBD sensitivity -9%, wich makes me fight in a very natural way to reach 127, while helping me to keep my overall playing very fluid.
@rasputozen
@rasputozen 7 ай бұрын
You're right that the translation from the analog hammer simulation to the digital 7-bit value is what's important. And that's what I think should be tested. The velocity curve is critical too as you point out, and having the ability to adjust it easily to accommodate different techniques, playstyles, feel and software can be critical for some applications. Still, the actual sensors can be lacking and won't use the full dynamic range of velocities (128) (though internally as you point out, the raw translation could be much higher than 128 before it gets normalized to 0-127 at MIDI-OUT), or won't have a consistent enough sensitivity across its range to map to a pressure-range that a normal player would exert on the keys. Many keyboards have trouble with a natural pianissimo, and in this review it seemed like the GT X can have this problem at least for some patches. Ideally, in a balanced velocity curve, the lightest press will yield a 1 and the heaviest a 127. Of course all players will have different expectations for what "lightest" and "heaviest" mean there, but I think experienced players testing this aspect will be able to determine if it's hitting all of the values in a proper way for most players, with no velocity gaps being skipped or overly finicky to hit.@@FaustoFerreira

@rasputozen I got hooked to photography recently, and can make an analogy to dynamic range: while pictures top on pure white of paper or maximum luminosity from a screen, even in HDR, the real world light has no limit ( maybe sun light?). The same way, an acoustic piano doesn't have a limit ( maybe Conan smashing a key with his axe? ). However, with a top velocity of 127 and maximum decibells ( electronically they don't even relate to acoustics ) you will have to define where to draw the limit. This is where it gets impossible to fully simulate an acoustic instrument, it will allways be a compromise. That's why it's important to have the most editing possiblities, at least you should be able to adjust the curve and its fortissimo (127) limit to your own preference, and that's highly subjective! As for pianissimos, I don't see a reason to screw that one: zero is zero. And that is also true for acoustic pianos: there is a point where the note doesn't sound anymore, and that's a very objective reference.
@rasputozen
@rasputozen 7 ай бұрын
Yes, you're right that 127 will always be an arbitrary maximum compared to the infinite response of an acoustic. However, you and I as musicians know that there's a point (more or less) where hitting the string harder makes no more musical sense, and you're mostly just damaging the instrument. We can call that 127. Likewise, 0 would be the highest amount of pressure that DOESN'T trigger a hammer release (and consequently makes no sound). Now what should the other 126 values be? The obvious answer is the equal subdivided steps from those 0 and 127 velocities defined above. This is what a neutral, default velocity curve should be. It would demonstrate the full dynamic range of the keyboard's velocity response (normalized to 127 steps). Of course other velocity curves that focus in on certain subsets of the full dynamic range can be useful (and it would be a nice feature to include), but they don't replace a neutral, full dynamic range curve, which is critical for using the keyboard as a midi controller with external synths, where any bias to any part of the full 128 value spectrum results in a limitation on the external synth's expression.@@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira

Hello... Me again... After testing the X Piano today, your review title made a LOT of sense. It is definitely flawed stage piano, but the best midi controller I've ever played. The organ sounds and it's vibrato/rotary makes me want to drill my ears. Even the worst cheapest organ plugin you can imagine is better than the organs included on the Numa. The pianos are descent and have a nice character to it, pianos are definitely usable but no more than that. Now, in the hardware section, I started to hate the keys on my good old Sutdiologic SL73, this keys are way WAY easier to play, even that they are not lighter, they have way les inertia and the keys feel more solid. The onboard audio interface is awesome too. Compared to any midi controller, this is the top of the top. Compared to any stage piano, the sounds are just toys.

Thank you for your detailed review. The best digital piano ever for me was the Kurzweil K2600. Despite the only 4MB samples,16-bit D/A and only 3 velocity layers, the velocity curve and sound source were adjusted properly, so I was able to play very comfortably. I still own it, but I don't want to take it with me anymore because it's too heavy to take to gigs and I'm worried about it breaking down when I move it. I decided to buy a Dexibell SX-7 instead and use the keyboard at the site. The SX-7 sounds great, but I found that I had to fine-tune the velocity curve to match the keyboard to get the results I wanted. I don't have that kind of time at a real gig. Therefore, I am considering purchasing Numa X Piano.This review was a good reference for that.Thanks.

With some clever VAST programing I could get amazingly realistic pianos with amazing playablity, hearing some recordings of old concerts today I couldn't believe how good they where. There where something about its overall sound quality that allways melted my heart. And VAST was and IS almost infynit in its possiblities. I used the PC3 a lot, that allready was 24 bit. @FaustoFerreira

@@kurzweilshiromako I think they are priced very well, actually. However, other brands developed on their less intimidating architectures, achieving good results without being so overwhelming complex to use. Kurzweil felt behind for a few years, specially about sample memory. PC3 was still using the old samples sizes when all others where getting to the GBs. VAST was not greatly improved, or made simpler to use. Now they release their SP7 Grand with Authentic Timbre Synthesis Technology, parting away from VAST, instead of perfecting VAST and improving its UI. But the real reason I didn’t get a K2700 was only the weight: 20 years ago I would go for it, as I did, but now, every keyboard I use has to weight less than 16 KGs. If I had this rule 20 years ago, maybe my back would still be fit, so an advice for younger pianists/keyboardists: protect your back, you will always need it until you don’t! If they launch a K2700 or k2800 76 or 61 I will get one for sure! And the PC4 just looks and feels cheap, hardware and keyboard, although the sound and power is there.

@@FaustoFerreira Thank you for your kind reply. I completely agree with your opinion. VAST used to be a revolutionary system, but it's dying out due to UI and manual inadequacies. Many of the functions added from K2600 to PC3 were not explained in the manual. Considering the size of their company, I think it's inevitable that they can't devote a lot of development resources to that, but it's very disappointing. I'm an amateur musician living in Japan. Twenty years ago, I took the K2600 with me wherever I went, playing all genres of music, including rock, pop, R&B, and fusion. When I repaired a K2600 due to a broken mainboard 5-6 years ago, I was told that it might not be possible to repair it in the future because there were no parts. Since then I have been looking for a replacement instrument. It can be played properly as a piano, the other sounds are also practical, and it can also be used as a controller. The closest is the Nord Stage, but the Nord's piano is less appealing. The rest were Kronos?, Montage?, and Fantom?, all of which I couldn't buy due to the quality of the keyboard or the weight. I'm not a classically trained piano player, and I don't have the opportunity to play solo, so I don't need an 88-key keyboard. There is no resistance to covering the lack of range with the transpose button. Rather, a lightweight body that is easy to carry, an easy-to-operate interface, and a high-quality keyboard (aftertouch is also a must) are more important. Considering them, I think the combination of Numa X Piano73 and iPad that you suggested in the video is the best. thank you.

Thanks for your comment! Only tried NW-GH3 on CP and YC88. They feel stiff to me, cannot play fluently on them, and I usually play on different acoustic pianos, even concert ones, some lighter some harder, but the NW-GH3 feels unrealistically heavier then all of them. I know NWX is a little different, maybe lighter, more similar to Fatar TP400W. Heavier keys doesn’t necessarily mean better. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much for this review. I have the 73 version for portability reasons. It's basically my travel piano when I am not at home. For whatever reason there are no fully weighted 73 key midi controllers out there - so the Numa X 73 was a no brainer for me. And I agree that the internal sounds are meh. But it's manageable with the iPad as a sound module. I wonder, however, how the new Stage 4 compares. Because afaik it also uses the new Fatar TP110. But has much better onboard sounds.

Many thanks!! for a great review. A lot of details that you mention about the keybed and key action are very useful. I looking for 73keys with built-in audio interface that can provide the good piano hammer action. I don’t care the sound onboard too. And Numa X 73 is my top list now. So, I would like to ask your opinion. Are you still satisfied with the Numa x? Or is there something more interesting that I should look at? Have you ever compared with the keybed on yamaha cp/yc 73? Thanks!!!

Thanks! I tryed them all, I prefer YC in every aspect except for the keybed. But I prefered Numa X keybed. So I bought Numa X, and still happy with it. I'm using Numa X + Nord Stage 3 Compact, but if Yamaha would have a YC 73 or 76 with semiweighted keys that would have been my choice over the Nord. YC 88 is too heavy for me, both keybed ( I would call it stiff and unconfortable )and overrall weight. I see the YC61 as a good complement for the Numa X, with a averral weight similar to just one YC/CP 88, or one Numa X GT. I would also consider Kurzweil SP7 Grand, with the same TP110 keybed and 16kgs. But Numa X is still winning for me.

Excellent information, thank you!! Like you, I never liked Fatar actions (except on the Nord Stage 88, for some reason that one is great). I'm considering Numa X now based on your video. I wondered if you tried Roland's PHA-4 action as found in RD-88 or FP30X? I ask because while I've never tried the Numa X (I tried the GT, but not the non-GT), I did try the Roland FP30X which has the same action as RD-88, and I thought it was excellent. Not great for repeated notes, but great for "throwing" the hammer without having to fully press into the key, like you said for Numa, and well balanced so even though the keys are heavy, they require very little effort to push. The RD-88 also has built-in audio interface, like the Numa, and I also really appreciated the longer pivot length of Roland's keys. Here in the US the RD-88 is considerably cheaper too, so I wondered if you had any thoughts about the Numa TP/110 action versus the Roland PHA-4. I unfortunately have not found a store that carries the non-GT version to try. (Incidentally I did not like the GT action much, I thought the keys had too much resistance). I'm leaning towards the Roland, but wondered if you've tried them both. Sound is not important, will use the audio interface. Mainly concerned with the action.

Thank you! Glad you give my advice such a great credit, but in the end only you can choose whats best for you. I had the same dilema, and here they cost more or less the same. I also like RD-88, the keys are also good, but I never felt connected with them. I felt this connection imediately when I first tryed the Numa X, and I still do. But this is subjective, you have to try it for yourself. All the positive points coming from the most objective possible analisys means nothing if you don't connect with the instrument. I also prefer the deeper body of Numa, it allows me to sit my iPad on it. And because it's metal construction, it even glues magneticaly to it! And you have great accessorys to old your laptop and a great music stand. The Roland feels and looks like a cheap plastic toy, although I know it's a proper instrument. Numa X just looks and feels a little bit better. The 4 ins also played a big role in my decision, it's handy on stage and even in the studio. Sound wise, the Roland has great synths, good Rhodes, but their ac. pianos... More expression pedals is also important on the Numa. But overall, I can not say that one is a better value than the other. I just made my choice. Now you have to make yours.

@@FaustoFerreira Thanks for that context around your decision. Totally agree with you about poor quality of RD-88 accoustic piano sound. I actually tried the GT again today and this time liked it a lot, actually thought it was the best. So now am leaning towards either that or the non-GT, but would have to buy non-GT blind since I haven't found a place to try it. I hate to buy and return, but may have to. Would you consider the feel of GT vs non-GT to be somewhat similar? BTW regarding your gripe about the internal audio interface overriding your external one: I think ipad OS only supports one audio device at a time (unlike Mac OS where you can choose), and ipad algorithm is last one plugged in wins. So the solution is every time you turn on your Numa, then unplug and re-plug the external device so that it becomes "most recently plugged in" and it therefore wins. That's what worked for me anyway when I had similar issues using ipad with multiple audio devices on same usb hub.

For audio over USB, thanks for the advice, but it's still too fiddly. I just use now the included Midi interface of the Universal Audio with standard Midi cables in the studio. Thanks for the detailed appraisal of your X88. You didn't mention that the action isn't actually graded. That is one thing that discouraged me a lot from getting the X73 model as a travel piano. The other factor is that in comparative reviews, the sounds don't hold up. I can't imagine buying a Yamaha CK88/61, but its sounds blow away the Studiologic X models in my opinion. Since I can't get the exact action or the exact set of sounds I want in a 73-key piano, I bought the P-121 (the smallest Yamaha portable piano) as my new travel piano. It has the same modest GHS action (graded at least) as the CK88, a basic set of features, nice built in speakers and a pretty CFiii piano tone which I'm well acquainted with. It's very cheap compared to all the stage pianos, and it weighs just 10kg. I know that a lot of people hate the GHS action (I did too) but it is better implemented in the P-121 than say on the P-45. I have played them side by side. There are better actions, but it has improved. If you can comment on the non-graded aspect of the Studiologic X73/88, that would be very welcome. I play a lot of ragtime and stride effects, so I'm very curious about how to avoid thumping excessively without a graded action.
@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira Жыл бұрын
Remember Roland A90? Great keys right? When I bought the RD700 ( the original one), with graded action, I was so pissed, this turned out to be a big downgrade! Since then I've been comparing graded vs non graded and it doesn't seem to matter that much, in any case. The same for the escapment effect: they are all fake implementations, that doesn't feel at all like the real escapment on real pianos. What really matters is if geometry of the keys fit your playing style, and the velocity curves available and precision fits your style. For example, Roland A88 seemed to have a very nice keybed, phisically, but none of the velocity curves where correct for me, and believe me, I tryed everything. So if the Yamaha fits you better, just go ahead, for me it didn't. Anyhow, I think we all can adapt pretty fast to anything, as pianists we are used to play everyday on different pianos, so we do adapt, though for me, playing the Numa x required no adaptation period at all. In the end, features matter, and the Numa is packed!

I know P-125 very well, its the keyboard I recomended to my piano students who can't afford a real piano or a better digital and don't want to deal with controllers, software, speakers, etc... Recently I started suggesting Kawai ES120. Price/quality they are on par, but this new Kawai has better keys. I still think that Numa X have an edge sound wise. It's definitely more effective, even with all the shortcomings presented in the video, especially in a live situation, with a band, most of the flaws that I can spot in the studio, just washes away, and end up with a very efective sound. The P125 is just... blend in that situation. Anyway, I almost never use the Numa X internal sounds, but when I do, they work well! Cannot say the same about P125. Kawai ES120 works also better in a live situation.Also better for serious piano study, better keys and better piano simulations.

Keys bangging the bottom is never an issue on acoustic pianos for two reasons: they are all dampened by a felt on a much more solid suport; even on an mechanically noisy upright, it is allways connected to a corresponding note triggering, allways blending naturally as part of the overall sound. On a digital piano, if you play with loud volume, it is also negligible. But if you lower the volume, or if you use headphones to work at night, you might disturb your partner sleeping in the next room!

Never use the hardest setting, as they tend to be almost impossible to reach the highest values without breaking the keys or your fingers, and make it almost impossible to be nimble. Thanks! Many people are very critical about Fatar keys, on Nord, Studiologic and other brands. I'm one of those. The new TP110 and TP400W are the only weighted keys from Fatar that I like so far. And I like them a lot!! So, that excludes the Studiologic grand. It is allways a subjective evaluation, but the correct geometry and response is there, in this new generation , this coming from someone used to play on acoustic grands and uprights. They allow proper piano technics, like glissandos "piano style" and stacattos, and some other subtleties, in a proper pianistic way, negated by TP40W and older Fatar models. Although subjective, this is my most objective evaluation: they work well for someone coming from an academical piano education. SL88 Grand is of course better than SL88 Studio, but these two are even better now.

@@FaustoFerreira Thanks! That is precisely what I want to do, connect everything through the internal Audio Interface. Do you know if the Knobs on the Numa X Piano can be used to send Midi CC data?. About the issue you have of Audio interface override., you can use the 5-Pin midi out jack to connect it to your computer instead of using the USB, in that way you will avoid the annoying override issue you are having when you connect it to the USB cable. @@jjptech Yes, each of the four Numa channels can be used to control external instruments, and you can then assign any CC to the main channel knobs, although I prefer to use the iPad directly as a control surface, because it allows you to just magneticaly stick two iPads on the metal body of the Numa, or on the stand. For hammonds or synths, I prefer to use Roland A800Pro or Nord Stage 3 compact anyway. Thanks for the MIDI cable sugestion, it works, but its a workaround, not the elegant solution that would be simple to implement on a firmware update. One sugestion for you, I've had the same mess on stage, but a little bit simplified: a powered and PD ( power delivery ) HUB that powers not only the iPad, but also all the other stuff ( just make sure you start with a fully charged iPad, otherwise it may warm up too much, and starts reducing power delivery, that can cause problems ). This way, its just one power cable to the Hub! Good USB cables, powerful power supplyer and a good PD HUB are essential requirements. For the Numa, unfortunatly, you also need to connect its own power suply, as it is not USB charged.

Like it or not, pedal moise is part of the sound of ALL acoustic pianos. Of course you can allways turn it off on a digital one. Faulty design, or baddly implemented, the fact is that all those "noises" and resonances, wanted or not, defines the caracter of an instrument. Take the Hammond sound for example: the key click in the begining and end of a note, is a problem that Hammond himself tryed to solve, but never managed. No digital clone would be complete without it! Distortion on guitars, that we take for granted, came first from damaged and oberdriven amps, not intended to distort, but by the need of putting it louder, and had no meens to buy a proper "clean amp".

Thank you for this review, at last a comprehensive and objective assessment of this piano. I am particularly interested in your comments about ‘rebounds’ on the key press (at 7m48s into your review). I had hoped the TP110 keybed would have fixed this but it appears not. The predecessor of this action, the TP100 is fitted to my SL88 Studio MIDI keyboard from StudioLogic. I absolutely love my SL88 except for this one issue. Here is a video of this action: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZC5hWN_pbJpbM0si=yEZYrc99ofXtwdLh Clearly the thump from the key press comes from the ‘hammer’ arm hitting the buffer strip, I believe the ‘rebound’ stems from this buffer strip not absorbing the energy of the strike and giving it back as a rebound. I am thinking a better material for the buffer such as felt rather than a rubberised material would help, so I may try modifying this. Usually not only is a premature note off sent but an additional note on is sent due to the pressure being held on the key. This secondary ‘note on’ is usually at a lower velocity so is not always obvious. The best way to assess this is using the ‘fixed’ ‘touch’ setting. Set the fixed level at a useful velocity value. With this setting the rebound ‘note on’ is just as clear as the initial ‘key on’. I’d be interested in your comments as to how you deal with this problem.
@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira 7 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching! About the rebounce, I just live with it. It happens from time to time but it is not a super distracting issue. And the problem is not the repetition of the note, but the premature silencing ( I never use fixed velocity's, why should I? ). Two things contribute to this: the undampened hit of the hammer and the short pivot length. Because of this it happens more frequently when you press a key near the inside limit, where an increase of resistence and rebounce effect is very noticeable. In the end, it's an issue, but in real world playing it's just happening here and then, and most off the times it's masked by the normal use of pedal. The main point I wanted to make on this video is this: despite some flaws, the TP110 allows you to use proper pianistic technics in things like stacattos, glissandos, repetitions etc... no more glissandos with the palm of your hands ( that's for hammonds ), or stacattos that you have to press the key completelly down, or impossible repetitions. The weight and inertia feels right and the velocity curves are also very well implemented, with extra "sensitivity" parameters to better sculp them to your preference.

@@FaustoFerreira Thanks for the reply. Yes your message is clear, and well demonstrated. I only wish I had your keyboard skills. For me the rebound issue is not so big and can be fixed with a change in fingering precision. I don’t fixate on this but it does occur and you have named it. Furthermore, note off samples can sound very authentic and almost completely mask the issue. I don’t suggest fixed velocity for playing, what I have found it useful for is assessing the ‘note on’ triggering. Also, by setting a particular fixed velocity, it is possible to review all the samples in that layer.

Yes, but... Needs two to carry it, as a controller, only good for piano playing, no mod weel, pitch weel, or any knob. To sit on the studio, it would be the best, if it wasn't for the MP11SE, with even better keys ( longer pivot point ), and more versatile as a controller. Also sounds pretty good!

I use it mainly as controller. We have now a lot of good pianos, synths, Hammonds on iOS, I really don't have the need for its internall sounds. When I do want to simplify, the pianos and Rhodes with a few tweeks works well in a low reponsability situation.

Hello Fausto, also here sometimes you use objective statements like "The Organs are Bad"" instead of "I don't like the Organs'' that would be a totally respectable opinion (despite I don't share it :-). The reason you like the Vintage Grand is probably due to the mellow character, as it is made from a quite old Steinway B and the sound dynamics is done exactly like all others, not layers etc. Sorry but there are no ''monocyclicle loops'' as you say, as Piano sounds do not have mathematical harmonics and a single cycle loop is simply not possible. For the release samples you are right, they are not a key off for a number or reasons too long to say here. The real Rhodes are all different and the ''barking'' you mention on the mid hi range is for me more an exaggerated fashion of some electronic simulations, not always true on the original instruments: I had several ones and now I have a very well tuned Mark I Suitcase, barking where it should and not all over. What I like and agree is when you say that one thing is the analysis,and another is if you like to play an instrument or not, that strictly personal and always free of any possible criticism. You can surely disable the Audio interface and keep using the X Piano as a MIDI device, if I well understood your comment (sorry if not) on almost all computers. I also suggest to test the Favorites, as they allow to select a complete Sound-Program with just one button (as you correctly mentioned to be the best way to go) but also seeing them ''before'' selecting, unlike many other instruments. Sorry to make it long but I promise to not write again here, ciao and keep playing and analyzing. Gianni

Thanks Gianni! I really apreciate the time and effort you employed in this comment, it is so far the most valuable critic and contribuition for my videos. I will take all you say into account. " the organs are bad" I know, its not nice the way I put it, and I might even be wrong, it just came out like that, I don't use writen scripts, just guidelines. So much to improve in my comunication! Although I have a Master Degree in electronic music, I never really worked on that field, developing an instrument, but know enough to appreciate the work behind GEM, Sudioligic, etc... and to have a clue about all the compromises needed to deliver an instrument like Numa X at that incredible price point. I know monocyclical should be corrected to very short loops, which I know its not the case here. As for Rhodes, I also umderstand that many digital simulations makes the bark "all over the place", but I still feel that in Numa they are a little too shifted to the left part of the keyboard. My experience here with the real thing is limited to a few instruments, so I might be wrong again. And I should have been more clear in the end, that despite all of the limitations and constrains, due to design orientations and economics, outside of analitical scrutiny, the sound just works admirably well. In fact, after the review, I find myself using less and less my pluggins, as I get used to the effectiveness of the Numa internal sounds. Thank you very much, keep up the amazing work!

Dear Fausto, I am glad you my intention to cooperate and not to pontificate or argue in any way Subjective statements are often considered objective or vice versa and I feel the same when someone says that a Music piece is a masterpiece and another one says it is a disaster: they are probably both wrong, at least approach wise. Thanks again for your kind feedback and keep working as you are doing. I left a similar comment on your i PAD E-Piano videos, with the same positive intent. Music and Sounds design are a never ending story, as almost all, while life ends and we have to use our time for that it deserve it, as watching your nice video :-) Ciao !

Ciao Fausto. I have just taken possession of the Numa xpiano 73. As soon as i turned it on and played the first piano sample my heart sank - it was not the sound i was hoping i would hear 😟. I don’t know whether I’ve got something set up wrong (although I don’t believe i have as even just monitoring through my heaphones i still sounded “bad”. All the pianos sound like they have reverb/delay on them. Yes - I have turned off the master reverb and delay - in fact everything i have turned off and i just don’t seem to be able to get a “dry” sound…….. is this correct, should it be like this??? I wondered if there is something wrong with my particular piano and maybe it needs to be returned - but i suspect that is unlikely. Interestingly i downloaded the Numa app yesterday and the pianos on that sound fine to my ears. I just listened to them making the sound by using the ipad keyboard. They don’t sound echoey or muffled like what’s coming from my keyboard. So I don’t know what to do. I have paid alot of money for this keyboard and i feel massively disappointed right now, that it feels like I’ve wasted my hard earned money on something that looks and feels very nice but that doesn’t actually sound that amazing at all……….

First lets take the obvious out of the way, your sound system . Is it good? If you trust it, make sure its not MONO ( a mono amp, even specialized in leyboards, are usually mono ). If using a mixer, make sure the streo is done properlly, Left channel is panned left, and right panned right. Check your headphones connection, usually a bad adapter is the problem, easy fix. Long press Select/zoom 1 and adjust STRING RES and DUPLEX to 0, and turn of all insert Fx and master Fx to experiment sound without any reverb or string resonance simulation. Finally , try VintGrand, I like it a lot, maybe you do to. Numa App is completelly different from Numa X, different engine, different samples. I mainly use it as a controller. Use Ravenscroft 275, Pianoteq, or Pure piano to get amazing piano sounds from your iPad to your Numa. Check my pianos comparison here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zpmxm5aZgtCXgZosi=kTv426DymSM_i9e3

Thanks Fausto. I’ll check those things out although i know my headphones are ok. The audio interface i use is the SSL +2 and I’m confident that’s working as it should because i bought it new. It may be the a cable problem - unbalanced ? I had a splitter cable - quarter inch into the AI and 2 quarter inch from L&R of the keyboard. It is probably (hopefully)something simple that i’m doing wrong or have set up incorrectly. Thanks for your time in responding to me. I’ve subscribed to your channel and enjoy listening to you talk about music and musical instruments. Good luck with everything……..Russell

Good content on the GT. I commented on this extensively on other channels and the fact is that SL need to make this machine for the player. Let us wipe all the factory content that rely on 'trickery' and load our own samples. Studiologic team: wake up FFS, great keys but leave sound design to the player as CLEARLY you have no idea what you are doing.

Thanks. I wouldn't go that far. Yes there's room for improvement, it would be nice to import our own samples and if we could have more access to synth parameters... But did you check the price, and how effective it is? I tryed before buy, and still bought it. I see it like this: it's an expensive 88 keys MIDI controller, worth the money. And it'a a budget usable stage piano. I'm picky and go to details like you, but I still think you get with it a little bit more than you pay for.

@@FaustoFerreira Okay, thanks. Down here it's $3K plus so as a ROMpler I'd argue it's not worth it as a standalone piano. I'll reiterate that the action is very good (being FATAR it shoud be) be if we're paying for the keybed only (and let's face it that's what sells it) then it's overpriced by half at least. The interface, locked software and other striking limitations are embarrassing in comparison to its competition. SL / FATAR have a reputation of completely ignoring the feedback from its own consumer base and this has not changed.

@@janntucek Are we talking about the same keyboard? My Review was about Numa X 88 ( non GT ). I bought it new in Portugal for 1100€. The keys are very good, GT is better but goes to 22kgs and thats too much for me. But the price here for the GT wouldn't scare me either, at 1500€. As far as ignoring consumers, I got to comunicate directly with the main responsible for sound design for Studiologic. Understood some of the compromises that had to be made, and left my own suggestions which where taken in a polite and colaborative way. Hope some of them they come through!

@@FaustoFerreira Thanks you but I'll again walk you back to Studiologic and their marketing and delivery of a flagship product. If "compromises" had to be made why lock the unit down? Why not open the source / software to use case for the player if they know it's going to cause consternation? I mean it's 2023 right? There's just no excuse for a company like FATAR to do this. They've got a track record of cloth-ears for their customers and any supposed feedback is just shelved. It's just not me disappointed here; this is mirrored by many users - SL has no forum (no surprise) so we have to take to YT / Redit to get any traction. And lastly to solidify my point, SL have released '2.2 Tines' addressing none of the programming, interface or sound deficiencies that are requested by users! I mean, what? Their release is: "Our musicians and developers worked hard to write new high-res Tines". Seriously, why? There's a million better sets already out there; again they just ignore the market and play clubhouse. Rant over.

Thank you for your input. Their acoustic pianos are what is generally called Hybrid. They use samples for the base sound and modeling for the other components of the sound. Electric pianos are indeed completely modeled. All other sounds are also sample based.

Sorry Tamir, you are getting it wrong, based on wrong information and wrong assumptions. Numa Player is at least 334 Mb on my iPad, and no, you don't need "at least 300Mb" of samples to have a piano sample ( the biggest Nord Pianos are around 200 Mb of samples). And the samples, and arquitecture on Numa X are not the same as Numa player, you cannot make a conclusion based on that. You could talk directly with Studiologic developers, and clarify your mind. I did, and it and they where super helpfull. If there are opinions on my reviews, they are my opinions, you might agree or not. But the facts are facts, and I'm very carefull with facts.

You're right, bad choice of words, there is only "filtering", wich I consider that should only be used very subtly, to smooth out the velocity layers transitions for example, not to simulate p or pp dynamics from a MF or F sample. Playing pianissimo on the Numa sounds just like that: a forte sample that was filtered by a low pass filter.
