What is the exact model of your Ipad? In Pianoteq, what's the buffer size and max polyphony? What's your average performance index? Thank you for the video, very interesting
@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira 20 сағат бұрын
Pianoteq even worked on an old iPad mini 4, although with a higher buffer size, and latency. With iPad pro M2, 1T, 16 Gb ram, it performs flawlessely, even with 128 polyphony, at 256 buffer. That is inside a Daw or a host like Camelot, with a lot other things going on. Buffer 128 works the same, no difference at all. By default I allways use 256, there's no noticeable latency and it is safer. On iPad pro 2018, 1T, 6Gb, it performs the same, although with less room or other tracks or instruments at the same time.

How does the overall and the instrument specific sound quality of those apps compare to a single synth like a Yamaha MODX (which can be had comparatively cheap)? Thank you!
@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira 3 күн бұрын
There is no overall sound quality to differentiate. The quality of the audio interface might make the most difference here. Any Class Compliant USB interface will work. In some iPad models you have the headphones Jack, that might not be the best, but the cheap Headphones dongle from Apple is really good, if you don't want to carry an audio interface. The ones included on some USB hubs are in general very bad, and might not work well with your good interface, so, use a Hub without headphone jack. As for the apps, the sound quality is different from eachother. In all cathegories of sounds, you will find better on the iPad than in any hardware instrument, including Yamaha, Nord, Korg, Kurzweil, Roland, etc... but you will have to pay the right price for the right apps. You will have to configure your rig, explore and set it up the way you need it. It can be more powerfull and versatile than any hardware synth today. But also much more complex and time consuming. The Yamaha is very good, soundwise. But for me the main attaction of those synths is the simplicity and controll part. You have everything at hand, you have a fixed arquitecture which you need to master, but then it gets very easy to navigate. The iPad possibilities are almost endless, you have to decide for yourself what you want: the convinience of a workstation/stage keyboard or the complexity and extra power of the iPad. Both are good choices, depending on your needs and your character profile.

@@FaustoFerreira Thank you very much for your comprehensive answer! I am already using Cubasis on iPad together with my MODX, and mostrecently Montage. I prefer that very much to alternating between instrument and mouse-clicking on a PC DAW, which seems to destroy my music flow. Korg Module is on sale right now, so I will try that. Hi. Never had any issues with latency, since iPad 2, when Android was impossible to use for performance purposes. I'm very sensitive to latency, that's why iOS was and still is my only choice. iPad Pro 2018 can still handle a full production with 70 plus teacks. The 2018 regular iPad is sure able to handle Korg Module, and some other apps simultaneously.

23:16 indeed hammond never liked the Leslie speakers, to the point that Leslie gave away the schematics for free and hammond never picked up, it wasn’t until 80s that hammond purchased the Leslie company and then sold it 10 years after. So, hammond completely disregarded the Leslie speaker up to this days. Hammond went as far as to put a proprietary connection to the speaker out to prevent the leslie usage. So, it’s not surprising that they still make a boring leslie effect this days
@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira 16 күн бұрын
That would be self sabotage. Do you think Hammond Susuki/ Ik multimedia today are honouring Hammond's vision, making a bad leslie simulator? I just think some do it better than others. That being said, the Leslie simulator on new Hammond clones are not bad at all. The one on the XK5 is quite good and effective. Then there's the matter of taste, and the infinite variation in Leslies today, as well as recording techniques and acoustic environments. Don't think they are neglecting it for tradition's sake. They where far behind when Nord, Crumar, Ventilator competitors came up, but now I think they are just as good. Just each one is unique. As is each lealie and leslie recordings.

@@followyourpassion8378 Exactly my feelings about iPad. Many complain about the price of the Apple, keyboard, how big and bulky it makes the iPad, or about the pen. And many functions you can only access with two or more fingers on the screen, no pen or mouse can do it so easily. For typing long text ( which is rarely) I use an external keyboard, either usb or bluetooth, and it is just fine. I also have a destroyed back, from carrying 25+ kgs Rolands, Yamahas, Kurzweils, including flightcases, cables, pedals etc... by myself. Not a specialist on Hammond by any means, but have some experience, as many blues festivals had one for all participants. Love to play on blues festivals because of that! Did some shows with hired Hammonds and recorded on some Hammonds on studio. You see, where I live a real Hammond is an exotic thing, with very few qualified people to maintain it. But I do know about Hammond clones, 30 years on the road. I watched closelly the development of those, and allways thought that the dificult part is the final stage, the amp, the drive, the rotary effect, the propper reverb, the controls, etc... not the dry sound of it. And I still do, although many clones fail immediately on the Chorus/vibrato part, not to mention the percussion, at those the B3x excells. The effect of a real leslie spining on our back is dramatic thing. I really cannot find this drama on B3x. Although I agree it is the most realistic thing out there, I might prefer other less realistic but that comes closer at the final stage to the drama I feel with the real thing. It will allways be a subjective thing. I'm a pianist, what I really know about is pianos, both real and digital, and it's the same thing: there's no consensus among my coleagues, about sound, expressiveness, playability, keyboard feel, etc... You can never get it all with a clone. So you have to choose what you value the most, subjectivelly.

About one and a half year. Yes, my initial evaluation still stands. Everything working like new. Still love the keyboard feel, it works perfectly with those: "Best pianos on iOS, 2024 update" kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpPMlaKqf9t9aLc

I have Pianoteq with 4 pianos (Steinway, Petrof, Grotrian and K2) and am super happy with it. The electric pianos are as well awesome. All that thanks to the great reviews of Fausto. P.S. there is a new iPad Air for around 700 Euro (some are sending it even for 650) with Apple M2 chip and 128 GB memory - really powerful version for a good price.

Glad I could help! And thanks for the iPad air suggestion, it seems like a good alternative to the more expensive Pro version, although I would not go for 128 GB if you are serious about iOS.

What a nice review! I learned so much out of it. Thank you very much, Fausto! P.S. Pianoteq has a new release (8.3) which includes a new piano - the Viennese Bösendorfer VC 290.

pianoteq is playable but for whatever reason is lacking in tone. I've heard it sound great from others but mine always sounds thin. glad to hear you support Raven as it just always feels good and sings both softly and quietly, so I'm not crazy! 😂

pianoteq is modeled. Years ago it sounded synthetic, now it's very close to perfect. Every update makes it a little bit better, even the new update for version 8 is subtle but meaningfull. Baby steps. Ravenscroft is still the best sample based piano for iOS. I just miss the extra GB and fuctionality that we have on PC, and the gap is closing, comparing the competition

I agree. I have Ravenscroft and it is the only thing I will play. I have the Piano tech demo but just can't get it to sound as good as R275 no matter how much I tweak it....

The best physical model against the best hybrid sampling available: sampling sounds real ( it is real ), but lacks in expressiveness. Physical modelling sounds synthetic ( it is synthetic ) but gives you the most possible expressiveness in a digital system. Both aproaches are closing the gap nowadays.

@@FaustoFerreira yeah I can definitely hear the sound but it's not irritating! i own SL88 Grand myself and never thought the noise was an issue. Before i had a basic Casio CPL100, used it as a MIDI controller, THAT was loud! And slow. Miles away from Studiologic and Fatar keybed.

The concern with key noise makes me wonder,how does that noise compare to an acoustic piano?
@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira Ай бұрын
Keys bangging the bottom is never an issue on acoustic pianos for two reasons: they are all dampened by a felt on a much more solid suport; even on an mechanically noisy upright, it is allways connected to a corresponding note triggering, allways blending naturally as part of the overall sound. On a digital piano, if you play with loud volume, it is also negligible. But if you lower the volume, or if you use headphones to work at night, you might disturb your partner sleeping in the next room!

I used to think Pianoteq was a "cheap toy" and not worthy of being placed in the same context as other more popular "high end" VST's. I'm changing my mind. Pianoteq continues to develop and is getting quite good, good enough that there are times when I prefer the sound of Pianoteq to other VST's. Perfect? No. But neither is any other VST I've heard. Thank you for sharing your experience!

Hi, I am a layman in music. I was attracted by the exquisite performance and beautiful sound. I have two questions: 1. What physical modeling app do you use in the video? 2. What brand and model is the compact keyboard on your desk?
@FaustoFerreira
@FaustoFerreira Ай бұрын
Thank you! All the apps and sounds reviewd on these video are modelling based ( as oposed to sample based ). Modelled instruments are mathematical representation of the real instruments, while sample based instruments uses actual recordings of the real instrument. Both have strengths and weeknesses. I'm using ROLI Block, two in fact, stacked together. They are just controllers, all the sounds are produced by the iPad . I hope this gives you a good start in investigating more about this subject.
