Finding out about retarders has been such a life saver bc acrylic usually dries way too fast to blend for me and oil dries wayy too slowly and I like to get my paintings done quickly 😂😂

The lighting in this painting is so beautiful! Anything backlit with rim light or dappled light makes a painting much more emotional to me. Even more so than all the wee details! So excited to finally be able to become a Patron! I’m not a painter, I started wildlife art with colored pencils and this year I’m trying to learn pastels. So I figured I might as well see what I think of acrylic painting! Thanks Daniel for your time and talent you share!

Thanks for this. I do agree that it's all trial and error, some things turn out wonderful right off the bat, other times it's a struggle. Even if it's the same type of thing you paint...funny how that works.

Thanks for the quick, insightful video sharing these blending techniques. After hearing the segment on glazing, I'm left wondering: What is the difference between "glazing" and in using a "wash"? Are they just different terms applied to mixing various amounts of water into paint until it's at least somewhat transparent (like how 'downpour' and 'drizzle' both mean rain)? Regarding the acrylic medium- I recently started learning to airbrush and there are products in a family of "tools" called "extenders" which can either be purchased as only an extender, or they also come pre-mixed with "reducers". For anyone unfamiliar with these, the extender is a water-like liquid makes the paint dry more slowly, but definitely not on the scale of adding weeks, and a "reducer" lowers the viscosity of the paint, making it more liquid-y so it will flow/ move much more freely. It is essentially like adding water to the paint, except it doesn't affect the color, and it can be used in higher ratios to get some transparency and when applied with paint brush techniques (instead of airbrushing), it results in something that leans toward what I previously would have called a "wash". I didn't know to look for acrylic medium, so I had no idea it even existed, which let me practice a fair amount with the extender/reducer and applying via bristle-brushes, and I've gotten some really nice interactions and results using a combination extender/ reducer. Just wanted to share my experience with this in case it's more suited for anyone's purposes.

This is excellent, thank you! I’m surprised to hear that the retarder extended drying time for weeks. A popular video by another channel said it gives us a few more minutes max. How long does heavy bodied paint (Liquitex/Golden) take to tack up and dry completely on canvas with 10% acrylic retarder additive? Cheers x
@StudioWildlife Жыл бұрын
The retarder extends the time on the palette for weeks (so I don’t have to keep on mixing my colours every day) not the drying time on the canvas, on the canvas it is only a few more minutes. I’ve never tried it with those paints but if I find out I’ll let you know!

For beginners which surface would you suggest which is cost effective
Hi! I Just joined your Patreon. I would like to know if there is a difference in paints (transparent and opaque are types os acrylic paints) or if this difference is in the way we work the paints (adding water or specific mediuns)? Also would like to say that it wolud be nice to have a "techniques only" collection on the Patreon, so it would be easier to find the lessons to learn nd practice specifical techniques. Also really enjoy your way of teaching. Thanks for the content 👍🏿🇧🇷

Welcome, and both, different paints have different transparency and the more water you use the more transparent they go! I’ll look into creating a techniques series too 👍

Thank you for sharing! I tried painting a dog portrait using acryllics, I wanted to try because acryllics dry quickly therefore one can layer and work sooo much faster compared to oils, but I have to say that I do find oil paints to look just thaaaat much better when it's dry, do you feel the same?
@TmHudsonArt Жыл бұрын
I use acrylics on watercolour paper (Fabriano artistico HP 300lb) instead of canvas. They are indeed very challenging to blend. I usually cheat for the blended backgrounds and use an airbrush and just put usual watered down acrylic through it lol.. The Golden open acrylics are meant to stay wetter a bit longer. Have you tried those?
