I love the speed of the lyrics... The message is changed for me though. This has always been my favorite opening, between music and animation. I never gave thought to lyrics, but this video hits... I feel like this song is literally about my past. I'm autistic and grew up with an BPD/NPD mother. I'm allergic to cigarette smoke, which she ignored. For the lyrics about "cigarette smoke into the unknown", I was afraid because everybody treated adoption as bad (into the unknown). I had no memories of my past or friends who in HS tried to reconnect with me "the past, when you were younger and feeble". The abuse (not describing, but let's say my sister didn't survive) covers the "dark and empty sorrow you shouldn't have had to see yet", "tears should never have to cry again". "Struggling to come to terms ... can't escape from" was my mind trying to protect myself by blocking memory of it. I definitely wore the clown-like happy face into and after my late teens, my coworkers thought I always had a good life, because my dad I lived with would pick me up sometimes, but I definitely felt I was "standing alone in the hill in the darkness". When I moved out from his house, I lived with violent roommates, making the "no breaking of plates or need to yell" hit me. When I lived with him, we had no heat, making "even without the warm to hold us" even fit. The "disappearing rainbows" fit for me first as feeling God broke his promise to me, before accepting I was lesbian. After accepting this, the "search the planet for truth" always seemed to fit me: my autistic mind was always considered a "seeker" who liked to learn, making it "the only thing" I was ever chasing. Shortly after, I moved from the north US to the deep south: not across the globe but still a new world. Working to survive, hiding who I was from the church I was a member of, "just want to love, be loved, and live our lives" is how I always felt the church should be. Instead, they were responsible for many children feeling alone: especially our inner children. There are good churches, but I didn't have one, leading my to seek "far away" and that I knew "no place will give the answer, except in our hearts".
