Hey Father and son. You realize no doubt that your teaming up has an additional benefit... That is, you are showing the viewers and the public, there is a great place for father and son example for some who don't have that experience. Aside from your vast knowledge Paul and your work ethics, you may very well teach a DIYer, or even a trades person, the relationship is mutually honoring and respectful and worthwhile in today's world. I just wanted to share that. I watch you KZbin posts and now I'll bewaiting for the next podcasts. Keeping it real doing it right. A big thanks

In your podcast you mentioned about Menards. Mernards was started in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The guy that started it. He passed away a few years ago. He made the Forbes list and magazine cover. I remember when I was young he was still selling a lot of his lumber and things off the highway near Eau Claire. You probably would be surprised at the atmosphere of the Menards store. The people there are all very friendly. They never claim to know it all. But they are always willing to help you find what you need. What you said about buying from a small company is great. We have several places here in the Green Bay area that we like to shop also.

I’ve actually rebuilt a porch roof that had a roof similar to the one around the 40 minute mark. That thing was a mess, it had something like a 30 degree hip rafter that was split off to another one in the middle, all the rafters were sisters with about 6 inches in the middle and were braced on a ceiling that had just about rotted out. I learned a lot on that project, it was my first renovation. For example, I installed my beam for the rafters level, but the ledger on the house wasn’t level, the beams themselves weren’t square because the porch wasn’t square, I replicated the angle of the original hip rather which turned out to be a huge pain (my first hip roof too).... I could go on all day. It stressed me out to no end at the time but I learned a ton and wouldn’t trade that experience for anything. The biggest lesson from it was to take it one step at a time, only try to envision the whole project as much as you need to, and problem solving skills are a must in remodeling.

Hi guys ! Great video ! For the house built in '61, the flexible metal jacket was grounded, but it sometimes wasn't grounded properly, I ran into this situation decades ago, I did a continuity test from the metal boxes to panel, which, in my case was grounded very well, so I was able to replace the old outlets with 3 prong outlets, and had no problems ! That might be some help for that viewer !

About the building inspectors - I live in a suburb of Fort Worth. I pulled permits for a full remodel with an addition. My subs pulled permits for plumbing and electrical. It was a big ordeal with many, many calls to the city concerning what was normal and customary or required by code. When I was finally ready for my rough inspection I didn’t sleep well the night before and when I did, I had terrible dreams that they were gonna come through with a giant code book, levels and tape measures and really scrutinize everything. The inspector walked in and said “ I thought this was just an addition” I told him no, that I had permits for the remodel as well. He said “ Ok” wandered through for about 10 minutes then signed off on everything. He made one comment about plumbing (which he wasn’t even inspecting) but didn’t red tag it. When the plumbing inspector showed up, he didn’t even crawl under the house to inspect anything and was about as thorough as the first guy. I wish they had been a bit more critical or thorough but it’s all about the Benjamins.

Woohoo! 🥳🥳🥳 I was present for the groundbreaking event of the StudPack Podcast! Great 1st episode! I'd suggest that the gentleman looking to upgrade his home from 2 prong to 3 prong grounded receptacles either do a LOT more learning about mains power in the home or hire an electrician to do the work. Someone who doesn't know how to determine if the metal box is grounded and tied in at the panel doesn't have the knowledge to safely and properly conduct this work. No offense at all to the individual, but mains will start fires and kill you within the blink of an eye. It's not safe. It's possible to DIY the job, but you'll need to be able to define "branch circuit," describe how a GFCI determines a shock is occuring, describe why grounds and neutrals are connected at the panel and why that's ok/safe, describe why receptacles today are polarized, describe what the difference is between wiring receptacles in series vs in parallel and why each one is good or bad, describe how a circuit breaker works, describe why the US is actually a 240 volt 2 phase residential system instead of 120 volt like everyone thinks, describe why 240v is better for high draw appliances, etc. If you can answer all of those questions without hesitation, you can probably handle a 2 to 3 prong grounded system conversion properly and safely without risking the loss of everything you own, everything your neighbors own, and even the lives of your family and pets.
@StudPack3 жыл бұрын
Cool thx Manny👊 Couple items: Receptacles in series or parallel... do you mean feed through vs pigtails or something else? To me the US is 240V split phase. Utility transformers split one phase into 2 120V legs 180 degrees out of phase. To me split phase is way different than 2 phase. I think some old farms used to supplied with true two phase back in the day 🤔

For the fella asking about Sourcing materials - I find that you really have to get to know the people at your local big box. Some know what they are talking about and are interested in helping while some are just grunt labor and will send you to the garden center to pick up roofing materials. Also, the big box stores don’t generally carry anything that would be considered “specialty”. Something that I find aggravating is when there is a common item that they have never heard of. The orange guys recently ( in my area anyway) carrying a small line of keg products. But it wasn’t too long ago that I asked for a pocket hole jig ( from the guy working the tool coral) and he looked at me like I had 3 heads. As for the big supply houses. You are dead on, if you don’t know what you are talking about, don’t pretend you do. I always start the conversation with, “I’m not a Professional, can you help me?” But even in these places you may have to hang back before you approach the counter and see who seems to know what they are talking about and who is just filling orders. I recently went to a supply house for a concentric vent for a tankless water heater. They didn’t have what I needed, showed them a pic and gave the part number. They couldn’t find what I needed so they tried to sell me something that I knew would not work and acted like I was crazy.

Wonderful idea. Can't get enough of Stud Pack videos. One suggestion is to isolate the microphone from the table. Every time you guys move your arms, it picks up the noise. For example, using "Rode VideoMic NTG Camera-mount Shotgun Microphone " with a mic arm would completely remove the noise. The mic comes with a great shock mount. And bonus since it can be used with you camera to record in the field. I'm happy to contribute it, it's the least I could do. I just need to know how to send it, or you can add it to your public wishlist on AMZN.

I watched one of your videos a while back where you were showing a cool idea of using big nails on saw horses to paint them. I stole your idea except I did it slightly differently. I had some metal L brackets laying around (each leg was like 6 inches long) and I was able to put 3 screws into the door using those. Then the bracket sat on the saw horse. It was very sturdy and the square shape of the L bracket also allowed me to sit the door in several positions very easily. It worked great. I highly suggest you try it sometime for a heavy door instead of using a single nail or screw

Hi Studpack. I enjoy your videos and have watched almost all of them. I'm surprised you guys don't have more subscribers. Great first podcast. Like the format. Where is the best place to pose questions for future podcasts? Here? I'm in South Carolina near the southern coast, so I can identify with your weather in Baton Rouge. I would love to see a video about working with steel studs. I have never used them - either for new or for filling in like you suggested in this podcast. Suggestion: It would be nice if you could cut to video of you pointing out things on the images. Just an idea. Even if you put the pictures on a TV behind you and pointed with a laser pointer. Going into a new store, reminds me of a story. I once worked with a guy who did HVAC on the side. I had to go to HVAC stores and ask for parts. Luckily, they were nice and helped me out. When I build my deck, I went to a lumberyard for the framing. It was about the same price and I could drive my trailer right up to the pile in the yard and pick out good boards. 1961 house electrical: I concur - replace the panel and start redoing it if its your forever home. The church - best thing would be to remove the steeple. Cement vs Hardiboard - I like Hardiboard on the floor. It raises the floor less. Tiling - I just bought a house and the tile didn't quite reach the wall so they calked it! Yes, on the floor. Yuck. They should have just grouted it at least. I like your suggestion of using extra tiles if you need to so that you don't have slivers at the walls. The outlets - could use an extension, or coil trick, or buy some spacers for that purpose. But what I usually do is tile around the box tight enough so that the wings of outlet rests against the tile, while being careful that the screw still goes into the box. insulation - an advantage to rolled in insulation is that you don't have to worry about clogging your soffit vents. About moving a toilet and sawing concreate - loved the title of that video Flooring - Do you have a tutorial on using self leveling compound? Why cant you staple through self leveling compound? i once saw a tip of using roofing shingles to level flooring. What about that? I had a guy install some 3/4 prefinshed oak and he would not level them, he just stapled it down over the warps. I wish I could have levelled the floor somehow first.
@jerryfinzi32353 жыл бұрын
On the 10 to 12" toilet problem.... They can use a 2" offset flange. They will have to did out the current flange a bit, but this can go them the extra two inches they need.

4:94 a few tips for ppl, if live in hot areas; for example: I live in FL. Company policy is that if temp is over 100°F outside and don’t have a conditioned attic, won’t be able to do anything in the attic area b/c of the heat. Each company is different, so I’d ask t(em that, b/c sometimes if they do go up there; you’ll get hit w/ an extra fee, and no one likes being surprised(most will tell you this when scheduling as well, and if your job is time sensitive; be aware of this as well. If those speakers were in the steeple (traditional placement) there had to be a way for the sound to escape, hence the holes... I guess I could use my computer then I could get involved with the podcast. I would like to change out my shower door. My home here was built 20 years ago. I've made a lot of changes, going with the times. So now I need a new shower door in updated version I've spoke to people at a glass place here. They sell shower doors there. But the cost to replace it by them would be roughly $1,200. The shower is a 4 ft fiberglass. Very standard in the building trades here. I know they drilled holes in the fiberglass to install it, when it was new. So do you think it is possible to DIY this or just pay the $1,200.

My second suggestion is to get rid of the aaaa's and ummm's. My third suggestion is to go over the questions the night before read them multiple times so you can repeat them in fewer words. My last suggestion is to not use words like suck or any aggressive word this is a family-friendly channel I'm assuming. You said suck I seen the look on your dad's face and he wasn't too pleased. So believe me I know it's a work in progress this is your first video looking forward to the next.

Ok, love the pod cast. Just a couple of observations - as uncomfortable as it may be I think you should look into the camera when you are talking to or answering a question. Your words are talking to the caller but your eyes are looking at each other. I mentioned below that y’all need a way to write on the screen. Maybe a touch screen or something. Maybe a couple of tablets or desk top touchscreen monitors in front of you. I think that would help when explaining something. Also, I think when you have something to explain - like the metal stud trick that you were talking about - that you have a prepared drawing to cut to so we can see what you are talking about better. Hey, not complaining, just observations and suggestions. I know this is maiden voyage. Y’all will get it sailing smooth in no time. Thanks a bunch guys.
