DIY Painting Tricks to Get Pro Level Results!

Hey Gang! It's painting day, and our goal in this video is to have the entire house painted so we don't have to do any painting over the weekend! This BEHR paint covers great in one coat and we're thrilled with how it comes out. All you need is a good brush, a cut in bucket and nice roller and your house can look as good as new. Agreed.........I actually took on the task of getting my mother-in-law's two bed house ready for the market after she passed. Paul, Jordan - really enjoy your videos. Your use of a metal pail for cutting in is a suggestion I will use. However, instead of a nail on the side of the brush, I glued a small magnet inside the pail at a point where the brush's ferrule will contact it just below the crimp. The brush is held in place very well and doesn't jostle around. In addition, because I only paint occasionally, this allows me to store my brush in its original cover between uses without the nail in the way. Thanks for the excellent content. A tip about the spray can texture is when done and you still have some left in the can , tip it upside down and spray. It cleans the texture out so you can use it later, if you don’t clean it the texture drys and the remaining can will be useless. ✌️👍 Great work men. Reminds me when I broke my son in 👍 as they learn they start moving quicker and before you know it old dad becomes the helper lol 🤣🤣.

Tip--when using texture from a can for smallish patches, use a circular motion, instead of back and forth. Avoids striping. If using a hopper on a large area like a wall, spray diagonally. Reverse it if you need a scond pass to match surrounding walls.

That Marquee can’t be beat! My dad was a professional painter, and he taught me early on to never use cheap paint. Even the paints he used back in the ’60s & ‘70s is not even the same paint it was back then. I always kid around that I learned how to properly use a paint brush before I could walk. Now I’m teaching my grandkids to paint. Wish my dad was still around to watch your video. I’m sure he would critique it 😄

Great paint ain’t cheap!! Just did a few doors with Benjamin Moore regal semi-gloss the result was phenomenal. Such a pleasure to work with. The marquee is definitely a good paint for a box store purchase.

One of the reasons I love you guys is I'm also about dad's age and came up doing pretty much everything from digging the footers to nailing on the last shingle. I worked for a pro painter for two years just to learn the professional way. Along the way I have never hesitated to consult a professional for new things like electrical, plumbing, sheetrock, siding, etc. My primary trade is carpentry, framing and finishing. If is has to do with wood it's my mastery. So Jack of all trades, Master of one. 😃

I had an old timer (now I am :)) teach me all those tricks. What I really learned with the tapping of the brush instead of wiping on the edge is that it will hold a lot more paint and you can cut a way longer edge with no drips. Tap everyone, don't wipe- at least when brush painting. :) One of the best things he taught me was covering stains. Use shellac. It covers everything.

@@conradcoolerfiend hate to tell you but shellac is a way more effective primer idol cover up but you need alcohol to clean up but white pigmented shellac once you get a hold of it you'll never go back to just oil base primer don't get me wrong it's a good primer and I'd rather use that if I'm going to roll out a whole room and shellac because that can eat your liver

I had an old timer (probably trained during or right after WW II) teach me stuff like that, but he also showed me a herringbone-pattern for brushing the walls instead of using a roller or spray. It remains my favorite wall texture, and for small rooms like kitchens and baths, it doesn't really take all that much longer.

I put a plastic shopping bag around my roller and brushes if I need to store them for a bit and put them in the refrigerator,,they'll stay wet for atleast a week.

@@TheMakyato It is a Purdy roller and pole. I am a professional painter and that is all I use; also Purdy brushes. If you clean them out right after you’re done using it they will last you for years.

I’ve been a professional painter for over 30 years and I use a handy pail and the liners. I attached the handle to my belt and it frees up my hands to paint ambidextrously and to be able to climb ladders using both hands while painting. Rinse out the liners and reuse multiple times. Inside the Paul is a magnet to hold the brush. I’ve been using the same handy pail for 15 years now it holds up really well overtime and does not put any extra stress on my hands or knuckles

Ou two work so well together it is a joy to watch you teach! Years ago when my house needed painting my daughter & I worked together to get the job done. Much like you & your son, I do the cutting in & my daughter does the rolling on the walls, we make a pretty good team. When we started the first room, I taped everything in thinking I needed to do so. By the time we finished the first room, I felt pretty confident in my technique of cutting in & no longer need to tape before we paint. So much faster & cleaner. We continued with our Mom/daughter team to remodel & also laid the floor tiling in kitchen, entryway, bathrooms as well as laid laminate flooring thru-out the rest of our home. When it came to installing tile on the walls for our shower, I didn't have the confidence to do it myself so hired a contractor & was sorely disappointed with his work & ended up firing him. But on a good note, our painting & floor work look great & we are happy with our work. Glad to hear you like Behr Marque One Coat! Really enjoy your videos. Keep them coming!

Great tips. I switched from using a ladder to a 36 in X 16 in X 24 in platform. I switched because of my knees and foot instep being sore after painting. Now using the platform is easier on both and I get a aerobic work out. Try it you'll find that your reach is extended when cutting in and it speeds up the job . It folds up like a lawn chair and doesn't weigh much or take up a lot of space.

@@brodyllc behr is trash paint . BM & SW offer affordable paint that is easier to work with and far more durable. When people say " we baught the paint already" and they say it's behr I walk away . The paint is a challenge to work with at every step. It will actually destroy a perfectly good brush by wadding up in the bristles and blowing it out ( once they get like that they are good only for use as a duster or painting garbage cans) . Behr paint absolutely will not cover in one coat , no paint I've ever used is capable of that , it is 100% a lie . People should spend the extra $10 a gallon and get good paint that goes on smooth and lasts .

I'm not a painter, but painting has often been included as part of the job. The wife never flinched at occasionally finding brushes and rollers in the fridge. The painter I initially learned from had one rule - brushes never go into the original paint container. So I always cut with a pail until I switched to using the handy pail after they showed up on the market. I still use the first one I bought some 20 years ago.

Thanks for the putty knife and damp rag eraser tip! Amazing on the cut in. I'm not a pro, never shown how to paint, have intuited the same techniques! Great to see that there's no better way. Yep, use Purdy for quality brush work. And a bit of leveling agent for smooth trim work.

For your bag lined bucket, drill a couple holes around the perimeter just below the rim. It'll help let the air out as you pour paint into the bag. All my outdoor trash cans have 1/2" holes drilled in their bottoms for the same reason, obviously the bottom of a paint bucket would be a bad idea but the rim above the fill line isn't a bad idea at all.

The reason the one side is longer is so that its all contacting the wall when leading the paint. At least thats what I always thought. I taught myself how to cut in and do it exactly like you do. Even use the puddy knife trick (if not than I use the pointed end of a multitool) Its actually fun watching your channel. When I was young I started helping people manage their properties. Mostly slum lords. But when I was the only one there I would practice doing it in the most efficient manner. A lot of what I see you do is eventually how I started doing things. I learned everything wrong before I slowly realized there is only one good way. Now I just do Tile and I love it, lol.

That paint eraser trick is a must for any professional painter. It's something that I learned naturally as I painted, made mistakes and progressed over the years. Thanks for reminding me of this trick. I like to hold my breathe when making my cut-in pass. It allows me to move the brush faster and that in itself makes the cut line even straighter.

My brother in law is a professional painter and he would get jobs with same deadline date and have me and my son come help….I learned most of those tips and tricks I saw in this video from him. The plastic liner tip was new to me and snipping the corner. And absolutely the putty knife and damp cotton cloth is always on you or it will look like the trim he showed in the other house in the video. He used the 18” roller for years but doing high ceilings is hard on the neck and shoulders and gets heavy when loaded with paint so he switched back to the 9” as he is so fast and when he back rolls you don’t see any lap marks. He been painting with his dad since he was 13 and is 68 and still going strong.

I use disposable shower caps (buy a package if 100 for $1.25) to line my paint tins, then throw away when you're done. If you're not done, just undue the shower cap, and it closes itself over the brushes to keep it good until the next coat

Love these guys. Their work ethics are just unbeatable. I've always been a stickler for detail, I am not in the trades but i have done a lot of painting in family properties. I really don't like it but the ONE time i couldn't be bothered, i hated myself and wasted time doing it again. Learned a good bit of info on the materials and cleanup. A side note I always do when I am rolling, once I cover the initial coat i dip the roller wet (making sure I don't pull my paint) and do a long sweep from one cutin to the other. It removes the roller stop marks and finishes off nicely. Great job and I really like the edging rework and finish product.

Love all the tips, especially the cleaning shortcuts to keep things neat. I feel like I always have paint all over the can, brushes etc. I have used bags over the regular size roller pan but I’m going to invest in the 18”. I also use a lot of press and seal wrap around my brushes, cans, pans etc as it makes clean up as easy as removing the wrap and discarding. Also, please list items used in videos ie roller handle, etc. Purdy brushes are good! Love the nail hanger trick!

I did some roller painting a week ago. When I was done I I wrapped the roller in a plastic shopping bag and set it on the porch thinking I was done. 24 hours later I needed to do some rework and I touched the roller and it was still soft and even without adding more paint it kept right on painting like I had never stopped. I've been using it every day now for like a week or more doing a few more boards per day.....Love that I learned that trick 10 or so years back. I knew it worked in the freezer but if you get it solid air tight in cool place it might survive like mine did. Great video and great team work together.

Pro tip for ceilings (especially large ones with natural light). Cross roll edges first and then back roll (finish) the whole ceiling in the same direction (lift the roller and start at the same wall each time on the final pass. This is way more important on flat ceilings, but at least you wont see as many gradients in the ceiling. Walls that get a lot of light from an adjacent window can also benefit from this technique. Roller direction changes the texture of the deposited paint.

Can someone explain or point me to a video that explains 'cross roll' and 'back roll?' Thanks, first time painter here.

@@mattg9371 Painting is usually cutting in a wall with a brush and then rolling. At a wall the rolling is generally a up down, down up rolling motion. The first goal is to get ~100% coverage for the coat of paint. The back roll is after you get coverage you even out the amount of paint on the wall so you dont have orange peels (large deposits of paint) and roller marks. Back rolling is usually down with a roller that has not excess paint. In the wall example above a roll side-to-side would be considered a cross-roll. So people cross roll the ceiling and floor edges to get the roller texture as close to the ceiling and trim and not worry about touching them with the roller. This step is usually before back rolling. When you are inexperienced you likely wont get close to the adjacent ceiling or trim for fear of transfering paint and you can miss areas between the cut line and the roller. Normally the back roll is the last roll. I add the finish roll after the back roll on the walls I mentioned in the OP. You will get the feel. Start with a 15 mm lint free roller on your first wall and you will quickly learn about your tools and your paint. Some paints cost more but get much better coverage. Just a note, cross rolling is a technique that can save time and improve appearances. I usually cross roll above and below window frames and then finish with a up-down back roll for wall texture consistency. If you are rolling walls the most important tool is the extension poll. Anyone rolling a wall without one is usually an ignorant fool and you see it in hollywood often.

I learned to paint from a guy that had 40+ years experience. Taught me a lot of these tricks. He always told me that you can paint for 20 years and if you don't learn how to do it right you'll never be a painter.

Question...After using the painters tool to remove all the paint possible, and then the initial washing of the roller, followed by all the centrifugal force, approximately how many passes are required for "complete" cleaning of the roller. Any and all responses are welcome. My question is an open question, not intended to be directed specifically to Stud Pack. No matter how much I try, I seem to always never achieve the results Stud Pack does. Thank you for the great video and all the tips you share!!!

Use your thumb on the hoses water stream and make a high-pressure stream and go up and down the roller till it's clean. If you have a 'slop' sink and a threaded water spicket get an old washing machine hose and cut the fitting off one end and use that in the sink.

You are just super fantastic. Please come to SC. My house was built in 1958 and has had very little work done. I look like I live in the 70’s. Still have the same old torn up linoleum. I live alone and am retired. It’s very hard to pay someone to do good repairs. You are my favorite KZbinrs. I lay in bed at night and watch your videos. Just a nice coat of paint does wanders.I love watching you and your son. You do such an amazing job. If you are ever this way would sure like to get you guys in on some projects I need done. I also am a BERH guy.... but... I came across Sherwin Williams emerald line. WOW! Super great one coat coverage, extremely durable and the colors are a little richer. Project Farm here on KZbin did a review on several paints. BERH and Emerald were among them. It's worth checking out the video.

They also have an Emerald latex with polyurethane that can go over oil. Only complaint is the Semi gloss sheen isn't the best so I'd recommend Gloss. But, it's fantastic if you'd prefer using latex over oil.

I keep a water mister bottle handy when I paint. I mist the the paint occasionally where the edges tend to dry first, and before I store my paint can, brushes, and rollers in plastic bags, I mist the inside of the bag. I never get any of those dry edges.

30 yr pro here, great tips on pouring out of the five gallon the other way I never tried that that's a good idea, also I've never cut in with the opposite side of a brush looking forward to trying that never thought of doing those tips. Thx Ken

Oh wow! Great about the baseboard clean up & using short end of the slant on brush for cutting in! When he said his neck hurt I was like oh geez! I was painting beams in my kitchen looking up for long time & had to wear neck brace for 2 1/2 years from it! So if ur neck is hurting get a brace & wear it BEFORE u get the injury! It really hurts badly.

Great to see the son working with the father on their family business....to the son, enjoy the time you have with your dad, it's something that will give you a lifetime of memories. Great work!!! My dad was a housepainter and had his own business and he loved using Benjamin Moore paints and always believed in two coats of finish paint even if it does say one coat could cover he always insisted to the client on priming the walls so that you have a new canvas to work with and his jobs always came out great. What my dad did on the glass doors was that he wouldn't tape the glass rather he would remove whatever paint got on the glass with a razorblade and that worked great too but he would always say every painter does things differently but as long as the job is done well, it doesn't matter how to go about those results. Keep up the great work and I love your videos.

Studpack..Your pro tips on painting 1. Use 5 gal bucket with paint rack 2. Straining the paint 3. Using putty knive with rag to pick up mistakes or drips. All those tips a pro painter friend of taught me 35years ago.. They are great tips I still use today!! Another tip he taught me is do not put a fresh roller of paint within 3ft of floor or ceiling. Start in the middle of the wall with fresh roller of paint. It is much easier to roller in the excess paint from the spot on the wall where you started. You are killing us having to wait 2 more weeks for the announcement.. Love your work guys! KUTGW

In the UK when we line out the paint skuttle you can get them to sit tight to the sides of the skuttle by wetting the inside with water slightly and this helps you to not tear the sides of the liner with the roller cage when loading up with paint.
