So what you’re saying is that the only way to get better at Bluegrass is to first master the Rubix Cube. I had my suspicions, I’ll have to bust it out of my sarcophagus book shelf. I always knew the Cube could unlock endless picking chops.

As an elder myself you described the youth that I remember I was as well as the elder that I am now. I totally agree with your observations. Now I just need to return to the practice habits of my youth. Thank you.

Jokes aside -- thanks for this Marcel -- I like the way Norman Blake put it "there's no substitute for time behind the box" and I don't spend near enough time practicing the way I'm supposed to. Message received. I'm on it.

Listen this couldn’t be more accurate! I’ve Played punk rock for 20 years, never had lessons, hated the whole idea of technique and really enjoyed developing my own way of playing, which was all well and good until I started trying to play bluegrass a few months back. Straight up rhythm stuff really fast and really quick - No problem at all been doing that for years… but could I cleanly hit single strings to cross pick/play runs? Not a hope in hell. Watched your video about pick grip (super helpful thanks a lot) and then spent a month ruining my life learning not to use pinch grip and breaking everything right back down to total basics, and it’s not only changed my ability to start actually learning to play bluegrass, but the way I play full stop. The point is, research + practice always = getting better and therefore having more fun and I totally recommend it!

Marcel, I pretty much agree with your older/younger observations. As a "younger" (71) learner, it's certainly true in my case.

9:36 - Oh boy do the young and old ways of learning ever correlate to my actual age! I kind of can't believe how well your description 'young way' and 'old way' fit young (23) and old (44) me to a tee.

As someone who recently came from speedcubing to bluegrass guitar, this is a video that I thought I would never see! My entire approach to flatpicking has been based on how I got good at the rubiks cube. I think they share a lot in common, and im surprised that you drew the same comparison!

I'm stuck in the younger method - but I just seem to be incapable of thinking of music in any other way than just experiencing it. That being said, I am making more progress now by getting some lessons, and picking up the odd bits an pieces from videos like yours.

Interestingly, I've seen a shift in the similar vein in the Latin (and general language) teaching world (I've been teaching Latin since 2015). The 'old' school says "just learn rules and memorize charts!" The new school says, "have students practice reading and producing the languages!" It's an interesting transition to watch.
@CanadaBlue85

That's interesting to hear. I think it's a good thing. I started to learn spanish as my second language a little over 3 years ago. The most rapid progress I made was long after I stopped studying the vocabulary lists and grammar rules. I would say I'm 90% fluent and I haven't sat down to study the language in about 2 years. When I do online "lessons" I just have conversations and ask the occasional question about certain vocab or phrases, all in spanish of course. Input and output practice are far more important than study time past the basics.

Rubik's cube I can solve, playing a bluegrass solo ... not so much. Rubik's cubes cost less than $10 at Walmart. Even the high speed cubes cost about the same on Amazon.

I got into both bluegrass and cubing in my late 30s and am passable at both. I think that on guitar I am that hybrid learner you talked about, though definitely not intentional in when I switch. BTW you can get a pretty good cube for under $10 these days

Oh don't worry, I discovered cheap cubes. I've solved up through a 9x9, my 3x3 solve is just under a minute. I've decided I really love the logical or intuitive solving. So I've yet to dive deep on memorizing algorithms. I'm still having fun discovering on my own for now. But when that dries up, I know what I need to do!

...having been an avid gamer for years my approach has always been to push the buttons and read the instruction manual later. It does help to have a basic knowledge of how music works to improve your ideas but it won't help get you to Oregon unless you take the trip.

You have stolen my dreams with your completely rational ideas. A bluechip pick and gorilla snot won’t add 30 bpm to my playing ability? 😂 I was going to rant about how us old guys just don’t have the time to practice like the younger guys do but truth be told I somehow have a LOT of hours under my belt “learning” about scales, modes and licks. 🤔 so if I spent that time actually playing you think it’ll help? BTW, I showed my 12 yr old daughter basic skills on solving the 3x3 cube. We’d race. Her using the beginner method where i’m using a much more advanced F2L methodology. 🙄 Guess who wins? Every. Single. Time. It’s almost the like the concepts in this video are true or something? You hit the learning nail on the head here, good job and great content as always.
