My first chinese teacher used to say in order to really learn a character you need to forget how to write it 7 times. I think copying the character over and over it's good method but it's quite easy to forget it after even a short period of time. You should try to retrieve it from memory and write it down without looking at it. Also try and practice writing 1 character once then another character once and then go back to the first one, its a good way to strenghten your memory and speed up the forgetting process.

That is the essential skill, and that is how Chinese people learn a new character. We look at it, and we memorize it, at least memorized it for a short time. We memorize characters by components or the whole forms, not strokes. So I think it is important to train your brain to process "image". Another benefit is we can quickly identify a character, since we memorize it by the whole image not strokes.

It might just be that the language itself is speedier, because there are some that when compared do tend to clock faster times on average, but I also think that people tend to hear foreign languages as incredibly fast regardless due to unfamiliarity (I don't know if it's a foreign language for you, of course).

Hi guys! As someone who has been studying Chinese for 7 years but has never been able to reach that fluency level the most important thing you have to do is go to China! Go for a few a months to speak Chinese all day everyday and after that you'll actually be able to comprehend Chinese fluently. Most fluent foreigners studied Chinese in China or lived there, if you only study Chinese in your home country, no matter how much you try you will not be able to become fluent. Chinese is not like studying English or Italian, you won't be able to speak like JJ or other KZbinrs without interacting and being exposed around mandarin on a daily basis. If you have the time and resources spend a few semester in a Chinese speaking city, it will be the greatest reward for yourself! Thank you JJ for the great video, your advises are incredible ❤︎
@WrongXNumber4 жыл бұрын
My friend went to study in Taiwan for 1 month. and besides that, he didn't live/study in China for a longer period of time. However, his ex was Chinese and his Mandarin is so good even Natives are reallyyy impressed. I went with my friend for the same trip to Taiwan and I have already worked in CS with Chinese customers (speaking in Chinese with them ofc) and had no issues with that. I know many people who got scholarship and studied in China for 6 months/1 year but they were hanging out mainly with foreigners or they didn't want to study that much. What I'm trying to say - you can learn the language, even when you're staying mainly in your country. It's maybe more difficult but not impossible.
@MK-sb3qi4 жыл бұрын
@K C You are very right its definitely not impossible. For example, I lived in a small city and always had private or Skype lessons and the only person I practiced with irl Chinese was my tutor for 3h/week. Yes, I was able to study, memorize and learn 2000+ characters. However, my speaking abilities are 1/4 of what I can read or understand. And that was because I never practiced speaking enough and my tutors always told me that I need to go to china to have my tongue "untied". And another factor is that HSK does not include an oral examination and you don't "need" to work on that. What I mean is that if you go to a Chinese speaking country with the aim of actually speaking Chinese there then you're gonna take off 100 times faster and better that you would have anywhere else.
@WrongXNumber4 жыл бұрын
@@MK-sb3qi I totally understand. My point was that some of the people don't have an opportunity to study abroad or to go to China and stay there for longer period of time - like me for example :p They were and still are scholarships available but I can't go due to some personal reasons. I think it's important for people to know that if they put enough work, find some good Chinese friends it is still possible to speak Mandarin at good level.
@ronaldm98864 жыл бұрын

you can totally just practice listening and learn to speak.It's not an urge to write it at the same time.Chinese is not like English, character doesn't relate too much to pronunciation.Even a Chinese kid always masters listening and speaking first before school age and spends a few years learning how to write at school.That's the most native way to Chinese learning.And when you focus on writing,take it as an art.Every Chinese character has a story for you to explore,especially for traditional Chinese character.Feel free to ask me about Chinese learning,I am happy with that.From a native mainland Chinese.

Hey, do you have any tips for speaking mandarin? I always get tripped up on my words whenever I speak, plus I’m not sure how to put intonation separate to the tones themselves, if that makes any sense. Love the video ^.^
@andrewzhang53454 жыл бұрын
Don't try to hard to pronounce the tones. Most Chinese people are not pronouncing Chinese correctly. Not even pronouncing wrong, we are actually saying the wrong word. For example milk is niu nai, but I and others from Changsha pronounce it as liu lai. To us, we say l instead of n, even though we all know it's niu nai. My point is that you don't need to worry about pronunciation to be fluent. The person in this video does not sound like a native speaker because she puts too much emphasis on tones and it sounds unnatural. Don't worry about tones and just say the words naturally!
@kevlo76244 жыл бұрын
@@andrewzhang5345 I disagree a bit- If I speak Chinese to my friend and mess up the tones on a certain word, he has a lot of trouble understanding me. My advice would be to think of tones as "correct pronunciation" and as you get more comfortable in speaking, you can relax your speech over time so that you don't sound like a news anchorperson lol.

@@kevlo7624 like which words? You would have to butcher a word very badly for someone to not be able to understand you

@@kevlo7624 for example, she butchers the word 看 and pronounces it like 砍 but I can still understand her, although it sounds very weird
I find your videos useful for both English learners and Chinese learners, which I really enjoy!

I wish I had seen your video earlier. I'm at HSK 4 下 at the moment and my vocabulary is very limited because I didn't actively and deliberately look for new vocabulary elsewhere. I tried to read some manga recently which I thought shouldn't be that hard and got the surprise of my life that there are so many words I don't know, so I'm working on vocabulary acquisition now.

Thanks for the tips, this was very useful. :) I had the goal of learning 3 new French words a day but I think I wasn't repeating them enough and I would abandon them when they'd inevitably be forgotten. I was thinking that maybe it might be even easier if I learn new words within the context of an expression? That might actually help me retain their meaning and how to use them, what do you think?

Me too... Been dreaming to be proficient in French. But always lack discipline and the environment to learn:(
I failed English E8 even after retaking... I think it's the composition. I couldn't make it

What HSK level are you if I may ask? I'm around HSK 4 but I still can't speak ass fluidly as you. I really need to practice speaking more since I have no issues with reading, writing and understanding for the most part. You speak really well!

She is so good in Chinese literature because she has had an internship in China. With this language environment, if there is no one around you who speak Chinese to you, you cannot learn it well. Just like I learn English. Your generation is English. Talk to me. I want to learn English.
