Heitor Villa-Lobos who lived from 1887-1959 is Brazil foremost composer of Classical Music, also known as Art Music, and is perhaps the best known Latin American Composer of all time. As well as composing over 2000 works in his lifetime, he also studied Clarinet, Cello and Guitar, the latter giving him an intimate knowledge of the idiosyncrasies of the Guitar. The 12 Studies, released as Douze Etudes in 1929 are an integral part of the Classical Guitar repertoire. As a whole the 12 studies test a major part of the techniques that a professional classical guitarist needs, and are seen not just as technical exercise but also expressive works of meaningful content.
Study No.1 in E minor, or Étude no.1, - Allegro Non Troppo - is not one of the hardest studies of the 12. It is mainly a right hand study of a rapid tirando arpeggiated pattern which is to be played fast, but not too fast (as the Allegro Non Troppo marking indicated). Whilst it is in the main part a right hand study, there are some tests in the left hand in terms of shifts in the chords, clear notes in the bar chords, and the fast run down which is the climax of the piece after the descending diminished 7th chords.
This piece was recorded recently at Rokit Studios in West London. The recording and video engineering was done by Mark Rose.
The guitar I used is a 2011 Filipe Conde FP14 NA CW, made in Madrid.

It’s interesting because study two is marked ‘fast’ so the intention seems to have been that two should be faster than one. Bearing in mind how hard two is then if we are following the composers intentions, study one would be much slower than most people play it!
