The Scottish universities were all residential in the middle ages, but from the 18th century onwards the classic Scottish student experience was to be the sole student living and studying alone in a room in a house or flat owned by a landlady. Nineteenth century parliamentarians pushed to make these universities more like Oxford and Cambridge with student hostels, communal dining and tutorials, but unless things have changed recently, most students in modern times have been in private rented accommodation. It used to be common to live in a Hall (= hostel) in 1st year and then move out to a flat shared with other students. The cheapest option remains to live with your parents. The most expensive is for your parents to buy a flat, for you to live in and usually to rent out the other rooms to friends. The housing market has changed over the decades so there may not be so many widows and older couples renting out rooms and offering breakfast and dinner (or no meals at all) in their own house and they tend now to rent out the whole flat. Landlords used to claim that every room was a "double bedroom," install two narrow beds and rent each to two students, but the market has met the demand for autonomy and privacy by ending shared bedrooms and switching to self-catering. The other change is that now that adulthood starts at 18, not 21, Wardens of hostels do not supervise to the extent that they had to when they had parental authority over their residents. Thanks to Mrs Thatcher and the axe she took to the railway network, it is no longer feasible to send your luggage from door to door, and back again at the end of term, by rail in a cabin trunk carried by two strong men. Chiz chiz!

How student in accomodation where alcohol is not allowed do to do pres or just to keep bottles ect ?
@thatssopeek

I feel like most (if not all) accom in Edinburgh allows alcohol, but if you're in alcohol-free spaces / halls, there will be tons of bars etc. elsewhere! Hope that helps 👼🏼

All the Scottish universities used to teach and hold exams in Latin, but they gradually switched to English over the course of the 18th century. However, if you study a modern language and were required to have passed school exams in it, the lectures will be in that language. Your diploma will still be in Latin, so you may need to purchase a certified translation if you are taking it abroad.

languages are helpful for soooo many jobs, particularly anything that's client/public-facing. In my experience, PR/Sales/Marketing/Civil Service etc. etc. all value languages students. I would really recommend doing work experience during your year abroad though as opposed to studying - it will make your CV more competitive 👼

Because it’s not a campus uni and all spread around did you feel it was difficult to meet people or did it feel like a community still?? xx
@thatssopeek
@thatssopeek 2 жыл бұрын
Definitely still felt the community vibe, the main uni square (George Square) feels like a campus - I would def recommend choosing to live in halls if you want to meet lots of people though xo

@thatssopeek
@thatssopeek 3 жыл бұрын
It depends, it's always free to sign-up, but some societies require a £5-£10 joining fee at your 1st meeting/session, others i.e. sports societies are a bit more £££. Hope that helps ✨
