I was one of the survivors of the genocide at that time, although killings and robberies had continued since 1981,the largest genocidal attack occurred in early June 1988. Somalia was obviously a major force in the state in Africa and they were using infantry,artillery and airstrikes with high training mercenaries pilots from South Africa. There were about 6 sectors in Somalia as 26th Sector at Hargeisa, 27th in Burao which was new in 1988 54th Sector at Garowe, 21st Sector at Dusa Mareb, and 60th Sector at Baidoa How ever sector 26 was the most powerful in the Somali National army and It Iwas the sector that divided into two parts 26 and 27. Sector 26 was commanded by Moahamed Saed Morgan, the son-in-law of the president this sector was mostly the troops left by British in 1960 and other younger troops who were officers and lower rank soldiers and most of them were Isaq clan . Then in early June 1988, they divided into tribes and the Isaqs were massacred, obviously the order for the massacre was issued by the General Mohamed Saed Morgan. There is still a mass grave at Hargeisa Valley and its area which is known to human rights organizations. When the military situation deteriorated,Tanks and chemical weapons were imported from Iraq and several other counters. The order for genocide and airstrikes was provided by General Ali Samatar who was commander in chief and that days appointed prime minister a lawsuit was filed in America before his death. The biggest battle was the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for example SaudiArebia deported laborers who worked in Saudi Arebia for long time and finally the ship reached Berbera and people were handed over to the enemy and they massacred. Scholarship students in Egypt had also been deported although they were not harmed because it was known by humanitarian institutions. The most cities that were being destroyed at the time were Hargeisa,Burao, Erigavo, Gabilay,Berbera, Odwayne, and all the villages under these. On the other hand, there were also rebel forces who were the Rebels against Ethiopia who were settled such as the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) and the Oromo People's Liberation Front (OPLF). Isak's people did not look at all this but they were fleeing for their lives and they fled from their wealth which they had been collecting for centuries. Isak's custom was to give gold to the bride at the wedding, which was stored in the homes so every mother had a gold reserves as a result, the army forced people to hand over the gold and then killed them but most of the people ran away and were shot dead.The rebels and the Somali National Army infantry found that there were such items in the houses and they were most searched and that is why people hiding in the homes were killed, according to human conscience a lot of embarrassment had happened and i do not like to explain it all. Nomads and farmers were robbed of their fruits and livestock and killed, farms were burned and wells were destroyed Camels , cows, Sheep were slaughtered for the army. The situation had changed and people have become refugees. . On 17 July 1989 47 male were brutally killed Aljazira beach in Mogadishu. The order was came from the presidential palace especially the president's son and several other Generals & led by Col. Canjeh, Col.Dirie Xiis, Col.Ahmed Hassan Dhegobacayr. At the time of the massacre they were attacked in the media and the truth was kept secret. Radio Mogadishu was misleading and broadcasting a calm situation. In Hargeisa alone, 50,000 people were killed and most people were killed by mortars and airstrikes but the number of people killed is estimated at more than 200,000. Our culture was not to be neglected the adults and and Children as a result every adult or child died with young people. We fled to the Ethiopian border and we walked for several nights with rain, fear and hunger. The people were fleeing to different areas where refugee camps were being set up such as Harta Shaikh, Ramaso, Geneva, and Daroor. People who fled Hargeisa went to Harta Shaikh and we finally reached a refugee camp named Harta Shaikh which i had never seen before. There was UNHCR staff and they were distributing some food blankets and shelters. This is a gratitude I will never forget on that day UNHCR was like a father and mother to every one was in that situation. Unfortunately, Siyad Barre's wars did not end when we crossed the border because there were hidden groups poisoning the food. In this case, I have proof. A refugee mother with children bought flour then quickly added water, after view seconds it smelled like DDT toxin,the DDT is a poison that somali people had known for a long time so the mother immediately cried and the people ran together and the The perpetrator had been sought but she escaped and not found. There was an outbreak of the disease in the refugee camp in those days and there is no doctor or laboratory, but our Doctors and nurses were used a litmus test papers Eventually the disease was diagnosed and it became a transmitted hepatitis which is not very dangerous although it affected many people and some died. This time we became a resident and adapted to the environment and we found roads along the coast to Djibouti and we had created a local businesses until we recovered the economy and built electricity and schools without anyone's help some of us have become skills support technicians. The role of the diaspora is unforgettable as well. The time has passed and 4 years hade passed This was in 1991 at the beginning of the collapse of the central government in Somalia. We finally returned in 1991 without any help and reconciliation began.Finally on18 May 1991 was declared an independent country called Somaliland which regained its lost freedom in 1960. Thanks

The policy of the Siad Barre government towards the Isaaq Clan of Northern Somalia is alluded to in a WRITENET publication, Somalia: Civil War, Intervention and Withdrawal 1990-1995. It notes that the government resorted to clan-based tactics to counter the Majerteen threat following the suppression of a coup d'etat staged by officers of this clan in 1978. President Barre relied on mainly three clans to counter the Majerteen threat: the small Marehan, the Ogadeen and the Dolbahante. This patronage system was referred to as the MOD (Marehan-Ogadeen-Dolbahate), and was evident as MOD civil servants, superior officers and businessmen began to occupy the top ranks of Somali society, thereby alienating other clans including the Majerteen, the Isaaq who make up 80 percent of the former British Somaliland, and the Hawiye. Due to Barre's dislike for the Isaaq, he reportedly organized settlements of Ogadeen Somali refugees in the North which is Isaaq territory. Armed clashes between the Ogadeen and Isaaq multiplied, with the government appearing to side with the Ogadeen. These practices are believed to have contributed to the formation by the Isaaq exiles in Great Britain of the Somali National Movement (SNM), a guerrilla front, dedicated to the overthrow of the Siad Barre government. A publication titled, Somalia: A nation in turmoil, describes grievances of the Isaaqs which include: the Daaroods and Hawiyes domination of power and privilege to the deprivation of the Isaaqs since independence; and that southern Somalia, former Italian Somalia, due to being more developed and densely populated, has tended to dominate the north Isaaq territory. The Isaaqs dissatisfaction with the government as it relates to inequitable distribution of resources became evident soon after independence when northern officers staged an abortive coup in December 1961. Since then, there have been episodes of the Isaaqs venting their grievances against the central government. A case in point was the bloodless coup staged by General Barre which resulted in the removal of the Isaaq premier (1967-69), Mohamed H.I. Igaal, from power, thereby confirming the Isaaqs view that there was an anti-Isaaq hidden agenda to exclude them from leadership positions. The Isaaqs through their guerrilla front, Somali National Movement, later launched an offensive in May 1988, on the towns of Bur'o and Hargeisa. They were defeated by the military regime after bombardment of the towns with artillery and planes, leaving those towns completely destroyed. Between 27 May and December, it is estimated that about 5000 Isaaqs were killed, including women and children who were alleged to have been cold-bloodedly bayoneted to death. The city of Hargeisa, with over half a million inhabitants before the government's offensive, was in ruins as well as Bur'o.
