Paige, no one was wrongfully criticizing you for not liking cat trees. I’m in full agreement about cat trees not looking nice aesthetically and there’s certainly an untapped market when it comes to tasteful pet furniture design. Most of the critique in that comment thread was about how it’s impractical to forgo basic necessities for your cat/pets and or kid in the name of design. It kind of comes across as vain and overtly materialistic. There’s a fine line between designing a space that will spark joy but also doing so at the expense of those you are responsible for and care for.

You couldn’t put the cat tree in the laundry room because you do not want your cat in the laundry as most laundry products are poisonous to cats. Recommending to your viewers to put it in the laundry room could kill a beloved pet. My cat trees (yes multiple) are not dirty, stinky or peed on. The happiness of my cats is a priority. You make it work.

They probably are a little stinky and you just don't know because you aren't used to it. I notice pet smells when I go into pet parents' homes. But the laundry room comment made me laugh. So many people don't have laundry rooms. My house is huge and I don't even have one that would fit a cat tree. Some designers (especially the younger ones) forget that a home should meet functional needs first.

We defend cats so much because people treat cats as if they are evil. There is so much empathy for dogs and everyone knows that if you have a dog with bad or unpleasant behavior it’s the owners fault, it’s the same with cats! Yeah, some of those cat trees are a bit excessive. I got a tall cat tree but made sure it wasn't wide. It was tucked away in a corner and not really very noticeable. I don't think a cat tree would work in a laundry room. People have cat trees because cats are always wanting to be perched up high to have a commanding view of the space, and they like to be in the same room with their people, generally. Otherwise, they will be lying on the backs of furniture, or on tables if there's room. They don't pee on the furniture (except in situations where a person might also pee, or vomit), but they do shed. So, what is a dog person supposed to do with their dog's bed, especially a large one? Put it in the laundry room? What if there isn't a laundry room in their home anyway? Or is it okay to let the dog sit on the sofa, the armchairs, the bed...? I love your channel, and this isn't the only one of the few things I disagree with you about. But if people choose to have pets, or children or both, there are going to be some less than stylish things in the common areas.

Putting a cat tree in a laundry room is just plain dumb.... the cats want to be where the humans are! Also they have sensitive hearing and will not want to be around a washing machine when it's on. Sometimes you need to be practical. I have cats and you can’t just hide the litter box or a cat tree because cats will act out and ruin the nice things you DO have. Same goes for velvet - it’s true some velvet out there is very cheap, but I’ve found vintage velvet/corduroy fabrics or even more distressed velvets (like the one offered at pottery barn) to be very nice and not look like velvet. Best of all, my cats don’t scratch it, even though they’ve ruined all my other couches. Ours pets live in the home and it’s our job to take care of them and give them stimulation, first and foremost! Design second.

The cat trees are ugly, BUT a lifesaver for cats that claw the shit out of your furniture. My partner worked as an upholsterer for years and he had so many pieces come in for reupholstery that were destroyed by cats (like foam and batting exposed/wood clawed to the point of needing to be sanded down and refinished), just so much work to fix. We ended up with several free pieces that we reupholstered for our place (yay!) only because the owner of the furniture didn't want to pay the cost to repair the piece after evaluation + it wasn't worth their time to haul it to the dump.

Love your videos, but cat trees don't smell like pee, because cats have litters. But I understand your point because you're only familiar with dogs. And dogs tend to smell bad and pee everywhere. So better just say cat trees are ugly, cause it's true.

Savage but true! I only have one item on this list and that’s the chaise. I agree 100 percent with your assessment of a chaise - it’s definitely entertainment room vibes. As a renter in a tiny 1 bedroom, my living room is multi function and used for hosting/enjoying music/movies/reading/relaxing, so alas the chaise made it in…. Loved this video and never apologize for having opinions. This is why we watch you!

Cats like to perch and be up high in trees looking over their kingdom; hence indoor cats trees, preferably near a window. Putting one in a laundry room is different from the purpose of having one. Also, they should not smell like pee unless the cat is peeing on it, which is very naughty. I agree they are ugly, so a design team could create a cat tree for us with a pleasing home design aesthetic. Cats are fantastic. I love all animals, and right now, I have two dogs, and they have ugly beds thrown all over my fabulous apartment.

Oh rilly? I've owned cats for over 40 years. Sure, if a cat pees on something outside of the box, it's gonna smell like pee. Or the smell is coming from a dirty litter box. Cats are meticulously clean, and just because they exist will smell like pee. Like mansplainers.

If you live by yourself with no pets and that makes you happy, wonderful, your experience is valid. But you aren't going to be the best person to give advice about what a pet needs to be comfortable and cared for. It's like having kids or art projects. They need attention, they need space of their own. Coming from a single person in an apartment, not happy, really wishing I could comfortably room something bigger than a goldfish.

Thanks for your list. There are items that had their origins in the Art Deco era (torch lamps, slipper chairs) so I grew up with them. Actually the lamps are outlawed in some places because they are a big fire hazard. I have a simple cat tree to give my cat a place to get up high without destroying curtains or knocking over lamps. He sleeps up there too. Glad to see your channel growing. 😊

Good looking cat furniture is super expensive and a major barrier for lower income folks. There are VERY few aesthetic topics on the market that are actually appropriate cats needs! For many people, "ugly cat furniture" this is their only option if handy skills are also limited and building one is not an option. Thrifting is also not an option becuase cats are very sensitive to other animals/homes scents. If you own a cat or dog, a pet's needs (yes cat's do NEED vertical space to feel safe and healthy) should be prioritized over maintaining a beautful interior space.

Hey Paige, I am a fan but in this video you say you would never buy a generic floor lamp. But you have a floor lamp right next to your fireplace to the left. I think theres people who like to have an "aesthetic" home over everything and people who have pet furniture. No hate if you don't like pet furniture but please don't get a pet then. It kind of reminds me of these really old birdcages they had who looked like houses palaces etc. Really beatiful craftsmenship to look at but horrible dark prison for any bird and often way to small. Same energy of these people who try to hide their catlitter boxes in tiny furniture and their cant cant even do their buisness sitting up upright. My cats litterboxes arent aesthetic and thats okay my cat like them and use them and cat furniture shouldnt smell if you keep it clean. Same goes to rodent cages bird cages etc
