Stop Hunting Black Cap Early Times Bottled-in-Bond

I love Early Times BiB. I have 3 bottles of it. My wife is not much of a whiskey drinker and it has been one of her favorites so far. It is normally my birthday bottle.

Dig both pours, but rarely see either bottle anymore here in Pa. Only thing I can add is that for $30 it’s a litter bottle. The ET’s is absolutely a hitter as a mixer!

I have both of Coopers and Early Times, Early Times blue cap is my favorite bourbon, close second Old Forester 100. I get a ton of sweetness out of the Sazarac version, although they are all Brown Forman until later in 2025.

I have never seen Cooper’s Craft here in Southern California and Early Time BiB is very rare. I did pick up a bottle of the Early Times when I was in Texas earlier this year. Very good for an $18 bottle

Thankfully I have a friend in southern Indiana that mules me a six-pack Cooper’s Craft and a couple Hard Truth DO’s on his trip up her to Wisconsin twice a year. The Early Times just doesn’t have that mouth feel, where I think the Cooper’s could easily be a $60 bottle.

I've had both and I prefer the Early Times. Blue cap sells for closer to $25 and it's a liter so almost half the price of the Coopers Craft.

Man I love Coopers Craft 100. I agree it's one of the best sub $40 bottles you can get. Too bad it's not in my market. I'd have it stocked constantly.

I wish I could find Early Times BiB in my area. I have been looking and been unable to find it for about a year now. Cooper's Craft 100 is a GREAT value and I can find it.

Coopers Craft BR is so good and so crushable!!! It isn't available in my area, but I bought two bottles online (which I hate doing) on a whim a few years ago, and so glad I did since I burned through the first bottle far too fast. It punches above its weight and price point, and I will happily break my online moratorium again to replenish the stocks.

If you ask me, Old Forester 100 bourbon fits the bill. Brown forman but with a little more butterscotch flavor, but at a similar price. I am not sure if Josh would agree, but I am interested to see his answer as well.

It’s tough to think of another direct comp within the same flavor profile and price point. OF100 feels a little too youthful in comparison. Jack Daniel’s Bonded is likely the closest comp.

Coopers Craft is not available in IL but I have 2 bottles from NC and two from IN. Like it better than most of the OF bottles. New Early Times is good but haven’t had the black cap to compare. Any thoughts on the lower proof Coopers Craft?

The lower proof version is nowhere near as good in our book. Jack Bonded is a reasonable substitute though!

Something like this came up here recently (in process edit…you just called it…the CC/1924 video)…it is ironic that CC is sort of the replacement bottle for the BF Early Times after the sale. Also remember…the CC uses the OFO mash bill, but the Early Times uses the different mash bill that did end up in 1924 and King of Kentucky. And we’re getting close to the new ET BiB with Saz yeast and all. I haven’t done the calendar math recently.

You do blinds so well but I've wondered one thing. How do you do blind tastings yet you "match up" the comparisons to be "close" to each other? The 2 being tested are usually similar - and strictly random to me could have whiskeys being tasted side-by-side that are very far apart and have almost no similarities. Your system must have that built-in. Thanks.

Correct. The pairs are pre-matched, and then drawn at random. We match the pairs specifically to make interesting matchups and/or helpful to folks (with the random curveball matchup thrown in to keep us on our toes).
