I like that the community is getting in there and cleaning up, not waiting for the "authorities" to come in and sort it out. Despite the huge damage, glad no people were killed. Hope the injured lady gets all the help and support she needs.

Can we PLEASE stop describing destruction as "It's like a warzone"? No, it looks like a tornado ripped through the town.

We are only about 1.5 hours from Mangawhai. The rain was heavy and we got thunder and lightning at about 3 am, but thankfully not a powerful Tornado. The power of the tornado is unbelievable. Thankful the lady sucked out of her bed is going to be OK. What a nightmare

@Mylifebyon6424 First Nz tornado recorded in 1948 and still stand as most deadly and most damaging recorded,since then tornados are regularly recorded,with a serious one about every decade,New Zealand also makes the fairly small list of country's that experience serious tornados 🌪.

No, a tornado's devastation is not 'like a warzone.' Comparing Mother Nature's fury to humanity's greed-fuelled conquests is like calling chaos 'tactical.' One demands respect for our fragile, broken planet; the other demands we stop breaking it further.

There was multiple mini tornado’s in Fraser Town three years ago. Out of the blue stuff. Fortunately no body hurt. Trees and power poles rip out. Tornado’s happen.

Was watching this stormy weather come in on the maps, was wondering why there was no warning or watches issued, since it seemed like it was looking really bad - I guess Metservice did not think it would hit or would not be as bad as it was.

Questions have to be asked about the build quality. I think 120km winds is bad but it happens often Europe during storms and the houses are left standing with little to no damage, maybe the odd roof tile is missing.
@c4elan3 күн бұрын
that 120km/h is just what was recorded during the full thunderstorm. but if it was a tornado id bet it was probably closer to 200 in the core of the funnel just looking by the damage
@UR_HR3 күн бұрын
A tornado Vs a storm are very different animals. A tornado of a similar windspeed to a storm is more destructive due to the localisation of the pressure differences, and the rotational component and updrafts create more flying debris, which in turn creates more damage.
@deborah6753 күн бұрын
NZ is a windy country being small island in the middle of a large ocean we get a lot of strong winds. The tin roofs are better for earthquakes as they’re lighter than tiles.
@MarieChardome3 күн бұрын
europe builds differently because of no earthquakes like here. lighter materials are required. and the climate 'was' so much milder...
@TheSouth-j7f3 күн бұрын
@ Ever hear of Italy? They have earthquakes there and the houses are more solid than N.Z. Just something I noticed. Its same in the US very poor construction with cheaper materials.
