The Stug III is my favorite German AFV in WW2. I do you like the low silhouette of the Stug because it was much easier to conceal to knock out unwary allied tanks, although it must’ve been very cramped for the crew inside.

Actually both the Panzer III and Stuf III are suprisingly spaceous. Of course they aren't comfortable but for a tank, not that cramped. There is a video of Sofilein and Chieftain sitting in one at the American heritage museum. You can check it out on YT.

Michael Wittmann, the German tank ace, started the war in a Stug III, the knowledge he gained in the vehicle carried over into the Tiger where he would rotate the whole tank over just rotating the turret, this gave him a fast turn radius and presented the most heavily armored section of the tank to the enemy.

The Germans did an excellent job with mass producing assault guns to fill in the gaps of tank production. We tend to focus alot of attention towards the later models of German heavy tanks but the Stug 3 actually killed more Allied armored vehicles and was used everywhere German soldiers fought. From Russia to Africa to western Europe the Stug 3 was the main anti tank weapon for Germany. Actually when you think about it since Germany had limited resources when it came to oil and manpower building alot of cheaper inferior tanks wouldn't have helped them much because it takes time to train combat troops and again oil was hard to come by later in the war also the limited soldiers was a constant problem. Having tanks and assault guns with very effective guns and being easy to hide in villages and forests makes alot more sense than just producing thousands of medium tanks with weaker armor and main guns like the Sherman or T34. Especially if you're on the defensive trying to stop the Allied forces from advancing into your territory. Another common misconception was that even though the Allied air forces were gaining air superiority they really had a difficult time try to spot German tanks on the battlefields because the Germans were very good at hiding them and more times than not bombing raids over German positions did little effect at destroying German armored vehicles because the aircraft at the time had limited success at dropping bombs accurately. So when M4 Sherman's or T34s did advance into combat zones they were met with alot of fully intact armored divisions of German tanks and assault guns firing at them from heavly defended camouflaged areas.

The StuG was not a measure to fill in the gaps of tank production, but to give the infantry an effective self propelled support weapon, it's why the StuG were crewed by artillerymen rather than tankers. Only during the second half of the war were StuGs sent to tank units to fill in the gaps and were then crewed by tankers.

Like, If the Rocket's or Cannon Shell's Fired from the Plane's like say, Knocked out a Track on the tank or Hit Near the engine, its a GOOD Possibility the tank would be stopped. And also, The Fighter-Bomber's could Carry some Pretty Big Powerful Bomb's and even if they did not Directly Hit the Tank's, If they Hit still REAL CLOSE to the Tank, The Shockwave could still Take out the Crew inside an Also REALLY Shake up the tank an mess up it's system's an stuff an the engine. And also With SO Many American an British Air-Plane's Flying around and attacking an dropping Bomb's an Shooting Rocket's, 1 of them was surely bound to Hit a Tank. And also, If the Plane's could not Kill the tank's, Well then they could for sure Kill the truck's an car's an horse pulled wagon's and lightly armored vehicles that were supporting the Tank's by carrying ammo an spare parts an fuel. Random details StuGs were part of the artillery branch. Stugs as indeed do direct fire support but from time to time may offer indirect fire support, they are artillery pieces. Even with the longer 7.5cm gun, they are and will always be considered an Assault gun "capable" of doing a tank destroyers role. This is because StuGs are primarily organized into independent battalions which can be attached or detached to other battalions, brigades, or divisions. It was I usually planned for every infantry division to have one or two Assault Gun Battalions. This was because the StuGs primary role was to provide heavy fire for the infantry. Assisting the infantry with assaults and breakthroughs yet not doing the assault or breakthrough themselves due to their vulnerabilities like a lack of a rotating turret. The StuG while not a tank destroyers did intact substitute for tank destroyers because it was capable of doing so. Tank destroyers battalions occasionally replaced it's loss units with StuGs. In some cases entire tank destroyers battalions created with StuGs did occur but rarely. There are many StuG variants but the most important is the StuG III Ausf. G, this was the most produced and would stem the other important variant. The StuG III Ausf. G stood for the Sturmgeschütz III or assault gun as it is known, it utilized the 7.5cm StuK 40 L/48 gun based of the Pak 40 but not being a Pak 40, the gun designation also tells the role of the tank. Based if the StuG III Ausf. G was the StuH 42, this stood for the Sturmhaubitze 42, the name meaning assault howitzer. This used the 10.5cm leFH or 10.5cm leichte Feld Haubitze translating to light field artillery. This vehicle was meant specifically to go bunker busting, though it also worked in some basic StuG roles. It was mostly built of the G chassis rather than F. About 1300 were built. StuGs will often be seem with the basic mantle that's quadrilateral in shape but occassioanly the saukopf mantlet "pig head" may be seen As a random thing, screw the Panzer IV and StuG IV, those are ugly as hell, lack of symmetry, just looking off, etc. Panzer III and StuG III superiority.

Many years ago, I had a group of friends that used to get together for large, table-top, 1/300 scale Micro Armor wargames. In one game I had a "game battalion" of infantry and a section of three Stug IIIs with long 75mm guns which, to the other players surprise, I used used as an artillery battery in support of the infantry, to control an important river crossing on my flank of the 12 foot x 6 foot game table. My friends later told me they had never considered using Stugs as artillery. But it worked!

2:15 Tali-Ihantala 1944 is mostly realistic movie of tank warfare. Soviet had 600 tanks and Finns few and some StuG III. Panzerfaust was unpracticed new weapon. Most effective was Gefechtsverband Kuhlmey`s fighterbombers who got hundreds kills in air and ground.

Great job. You have the ability to make your points quickly and not boring your audience. As for the StuG: it was a means of giving precise firepower to hard targets that were identified by those who needed it most(front line infantry). It was served by artillery units and was highly sought after by artillery men as the ability to gain recognition, promotion and medals. The opportunity offered in SuG units was FAR superior to that of those serving traditional artillery guns. When Germany was ascending, and on the offensive, the StuG fulfilled the role of Assault Gun. When Germany was on the defensive(say after Summer of ‘43) the need for Tank Destroyers became a priority. After the switch from Assault Gun to Tank Destroyer, I’m not sure as to artillery units crewed StuG’s or more traditional Panzer troops.

the StuG III’s last combat action was in the Six Day War of 1967 where it was used by the Syrians as a mobile artillery and you can see some of them in the war museums in Israel alongside other WW2 German tanks such as the Panzer IV and Jadgpanzer IV. Thinking of Vanguard's turrets standing in for Hood's in Sink the Bismarck, and the plethora of crusiers involved in The Battle of the River Plate, two of which actually played a some role during the actual thing. HMS Achilles being apart of the battle (INS Dehli at the time of filming) and HMS Cumberland being the second heavy cruiser of Force G, although wasn't present during the battle she did join the two Leanders in patroling the estuary.

Definitely my favourite German tank, along with the Mark IV. When the plan was put forward for the original Sturmgeschutz III it was stipulated that it had to be no taller than a man. Actually it stood at 7 foot 1 inch. Not sure if the comparison with the Sherman is a good one. Like all tanks the Sherman was a compromise. And the engines which were most available at the time was the big rotary aircraft engines which took up quite a bit of space. If you compare the Sherman to the British Cromwell tanks with it's Rolls-Royce Meteor V12 petrol engine you can see how much shorter the Cromwell. Some 10 to 19 inches. And the Cromwell also had an aircraft engine. The Rolls-Royce Meteor engine was the Merlin engine as used on the Spitfire but without the supercharger. This made it the fastest tank used in WW2 with a top speed of 40 MPH

@@JohnnyJohnsonEsq it is an amazing vehicle and a great help for the soldiers, the StuG was the "poor man's tank". Because of the kind of warfare it needs to perform well it did fit perfect on defensive battle which also favors the soldier in the foxhole.

For any of you that have an interest in playing the gold standard of WW2 tactical video games, try the Combat Mission series which my friends and I have been playing for the last 20 years. We just finished a scenario from the Red Thunder module which covers battles in 44 and 45 on the eastern front. In this particular scenario the Germans have two King Tigers why the Russians have about 25 tanks including two ISU 122's. Interestingly each side also has some Shermans. The Russians because of lend lease and the Germans because they captured one. The Russians lost 22 of their 25 tanks while the Germans only lost 2, both of them Mark IVs. The King Tigers are basically invulnerable. One of them took 15 hits, 6 on it's rear including 3 from a ISU 122 firing AP. The shots from the T-34's that had the 75mm bounced off like tennis balls. If you want to get an idea of the gameplay there are many videos on You Tube about Combat Mission.

to those that don't know. The scene where the stugs retreated when the shermans arrived, weren't just because they thought they can't match the shermans. while a sherman's gun can penetrate a stug III, the shermans shown in the scene together with Easy company were just a small force who were part of an even bigger force going for a push along the lines. there were many more shermans in the surrounding areas during that time, not just the three to four shown in the scene. even a jagpanther can easily get penetrated by a 75mm from the side, not to mention the threat of infantry

It's hard to focus on only one Company in a very large battle and still show the true scale of things. But something of note was that most of the StuGs in that battle were fresh replacements. The sight of enemy tanks that knew what they were doing (regardless of armor and gun stats) could cause green troops to dip.

All i know that, it never meant to do a tank job like charge and breakthrough enemy defense line but it also kinda blur on what the Stug were made to do. Is it mobile assault gun which meant to assault enemy defense while also support the infantry and especially their main element of tank or it is a tank destroyer, meant to stay behind the main element and provide rear protection or destroy enemy armor at longer distance. The German seem to prefer using Stug in both way. Plus, the only major drawback of German TD and assault gun, is it was turretless, meant it had to turn the whole chasis in the direction it meant to fire it's gun. This could be disadvantages if fight in area where there's little room of movement like cities, village and dense forest. Even worse, without Infantry support.

If you look at the development and it's branches the initial use becomes clear. The original used the 75L24 howitzer (same as early Panzer IV) and where attached to the infantry as mobile gun platforms to deal with bunkers and (using HE) enemy infantry. Similar to the 75mm Infantry gun but with better crew protection. With the war it was modified to carry a longer 75L42 and then 75L48 since it was the fastest way to get that gun (similar to the PAK 40 AT gun) into a tracked and armored chassis. Problem was that now the infantry no longer had a support gun. So in comes the StuH 42, a StuG with a 105mm howitzer

I play a game called war thunder. And the stug there is a masterpiece. Good armor, low profile, good gun and generally fast makes its an excellent tank hunter as described in the video. When using it i dont mind the fact it has no turrut. Infact i actually prefer it sometimes bcs the front armor is always facing the enemy when you are aiming. Stug is surely one of my favourite armored vehicles all times

Interestingly, the StuG mock-up in Saving Private Ryan is a swedish Stormartillerivagn (SAV) m/43 (Assault artillery vehicle model /43), a vehicle based on the swedish license produced Strv m/41 (Pz.38(t)/TNH) chassis with a new superstructure and a 10,5 cm howitzer, built for the same infantry support purpose as the StuG.

It should be noted that the StuG III is primarily operated by the Artillery branch of the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS. Dedicated tank destroyers such as the Jagdpanther, Jagdpanzer IV, and Hetzer are operated by the the Panzerjäger branch. Thus, in a Panzer or Panzergrenadier Division, you have the tanks operated by the Panzer, the StuG IIIs by the Artillery, and the tank destroyers by the Panzerjäger.

At the beginninng of WW2 Stugs were used as assault SPGs, with thickest armor and 7.5cm gun similar to early Panzer 4, and it's purpose was to engage fortifications, being virtually immine to low-caliber AT-guns, destroy them and provide space for further assault into enemy's backline, as blitzkrieg dictated. The AT-SPG role was applied due to heavy need in weapons, capable of fighting Soviet tanks, and little to no fortifications as well as total failure of blitzkrieg.

They are really good for ambushes. Try finding them in a ruined city, or dense vegetation... Also, in principle, you can mount a heavier cannon with more recoil than you could in a regular tank (turret ring, stress of recoil, weight too high, flipping...)

Alkett or Altmärkische Kettenwerk GmbH wars the main producer of the StuG III (and StuH 42). The Friedrich Krupp Grusonwerk AG made all 1100 StuG IV after Alkett wars able to produce StuG IIIs again the StuG IV production ended

Apparently the Stugs were a really difficult vehicle to crew with very limited visibility and little room inside for crew, ammo and gun with the sloped sides. Its amazing they were so effective.

The Sturmhaubitze 42 is a StuG with a 105mm howitzer. The choice what any vehicle would become was made very late in production when the gun was fitted and you could change a StuG to a StuH and back at the higher maintenance levels (depot maintenence)

A small sidenote which you may have known: the finns made the ppsh (or as we know it, Suomi konepistooli --> Finland submachinegun) was made first, in the 1939. The Soviets saw the design and started changing things on it and it became the ppsh-41

@@Viljami32 That's not accurate. Soviets did take a look at the Suomi blueprint, but didn't end up using basically anything from the gun itself. The soviets wanted to make cheap stamped steel weapons in large numbers. A Suomi was not at all what they wanted or needed. Suomi's were quite expensive and required a lot more man hours from highly capable craftsmen to manufacture. They did however copy the drum magazine design.

hmmm I'm not sure to be honest. I think a 'clang' would be more if it deflected. The internal explosion would be happening at such a fraction of a second after the round hit the frontal armor but I can't say forsure.

@@JohnnyJohnsonEsq Solid shot innit - AP rounds. Could be HEAT round I suppose. Shaped changes just burn through and scatter hot stuff around which equals ‘bang’’ if it touches ammo. AP or solid shot rounds just go in and rattle around inside turning the crew to mince. Again - Goes ‘bang’ if it hits ammo which is likely, of course . Hence the term brewing up meaning to hit multiple time until it burns or explodes. Buy the point in each case would be clang! Then a moment maybe later Bangaboom. Don’t take my word for it though, matey, you know what I’m like! Rabbit rabbit rabbit!,

@@geordiedog1749 The main german round against tanks was a APCBC-HE so it would go "boom" after the "Clang". HEAT existed but was not very common since early HEAT wasn't all that great when fired from a rifled high velocity gun (It does not like spin, modern HEAT for rifled guns like Royal Ordonance L7/M68/Rh105 and the RO L11 and L30 use de-spun projectiles)
