Hans Deibl was a Stuka pilot during ww2 in North Africa. He lives in Austria. This year he visited South Africa to meet his former enemy, Cecil Golding, who shot Hans down in June 1942 during the battle of Bir Hacheim. While Hans was here I filmed the interview.
Hans' web site: cecilgolding.yolasite.com/hans...
Thank you Hans for this nice interview and also Cordelie for establishing the contacts with Hans!

The SAAF pilot that shot him down was also shot down and they met in the ambulance that took them to Tobruk. It was in the ambulance that they became "friends"

What did they do with all the young men. I am Austrian 🇦🇹🏔 and my father was forced to join the German army 1942. He was a very young man and he managed to survive in the 144. Mountain Ranger Division. He became many times heavily wounded and at the end he became a POW in Ex-Yugoslavia. What a mare dream being a POW in the hands of the Serbians. 1949 he came back traumatized but he could get back to his job he learned in a ship building company. This generation was hardened like steel. I learned so much from him in so many ways and I am so glad that I had such a father. Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹🏔⛷🍺🥨🌻🛶🐺EUROPE!

He gave me copies of the story of him and the SAAF pilot and an old book, WW II vintage, about Stukas. On the day he was shot down, H.J. Marseille was flying fighter cover...Hans told me that his gunner was immediately killed, but he manged to bail out. He also told me a nice story, where he had to fly a battle damaged Stuka back to Austria for repair...the aircraft had a damaged wing and tended to always pull to that side during the flight, which annoyed him after a while so Hans used his flying scarf, wrapped it around the stick and around his neck and used this as a sort of "autopilot" to relieve his tiring arms...:-)

@@toniborg1287 Hi, I am from Lincolnshire England. My Dad was in the British infantry during WW2, where he fought in both N Africa, France and Holland, took part in the D-Day landings, survived without harm, but died in 2006. I served in the RAF as ground crew '79-'88, based in Germany for 3 years at RAF Gutersloh. Have fond memories of German people old and young. This man in the video somewhat reminded me of my own Father. In another world, they could have been Brothers. Peace to you.

Firstly, this was a really neat interview, and thank you for publishing it. Secondly, if you haven't used the closed captioning, watch it again with CC on. Now. It's awesome, especially the parts in German. With the volume low, I could just make out in the newsreel something like, "Englische Kampfwagen..blah blah...Englische Flakfeuer", which the CC rendered as, "Folks I'm gift of in the last couple outings! And often from togo, use his truck file! On phones, and propped up, and been seen our guys think I'm come often and Monday!" I really shouldn't stay up so late watching this stuff, but the image in my head of Joseph Goebbels shouting nonsense like that makes the Nazi war machine seem less threatening and more like someone who just had a stroke, lol.

I used to collect German Air Force stuff from WW II and I met Hans under funny circumstances. I once had a charter flight to, I think, Heraklion and some guys wanted to visit the cockpit...so I happend to meet his daughter(?) who gave me his phone number and then I arranged a meet, Hans came to my place to visit my collection. That was about 20 years ago. Unfortunately I lost the contact data shortly afterwards.I hope he´s still alive.

It's so silly , we try and kill each other but then we treat the enemy wounded with the same compassion as if they were our own. I think this probably happened on both sides though there were many instances of just being left or shot but the ordinary soldier oddly never really hated the enemy ordinary soldier.

Most say the Stuka is a ugly plane. I beg to differ, the Stuka is a beautiful airplane. I just love the Stuka, and wish a search and destroy wasn't ordered after the war. I think they are just wonderful planes with an ascetic beauty no other plane has ever had.

Idk if it’s original or not but my local museum has a Stuka hanging with all its original markings. She’s beautiful. The silhouette of the Stuka reminds me of the luftwafge eagle, the wings bent like a bird’s, and the wheels locked in place looked like the talons of a bird trying to pick up prey. Totally agree. Menacingly beautiful machine.
