For everyone who is complaining about the way their music has changed just understand that they have aged another 10/15 years since this album came out, their music has changed with their age, you can’t expect somebody to do the same thing for fifteen years, they will grow with technique and stuff

Was thinking this after going back and forth with new and old AM today.. they’ve changed so much but only as much as any normal person, it’s just maginifed bc they’re in the spotlight and we watch them GROW not change

Nothing has ever hit the same way again as this song did. There's nothing that quite sings 'wistful melancholy' like Mardy Bum. For those of us who were teenagers when Whatever People Say I Am came out, it's extra special. We grew up on this strange generation of music, twenty-somethings singing songs that evoke feelings of rose-tinted good old days none of us were yet old enough to have, not knowing that they'd be the good old days we'd one day wish to return to. No wonder we all grew up to be depressed and full of ennui, eh.

Now then Mardy Bum I see your frown And it's like looking down the barrel of a gun And it goes off And out come all these words Oh there's a very pleasant side to you A side I much prefer It's one that laughs and jokes around Remember cuddles in the kitchen Yeah, to get things off the ground And it was up, up and away Oh, but it's right hard to remember That on a day like today when you're all argumentative And you've got the face on Well now then Mardy Bum Oh I'm in trouble again, aren't I I thought as much Cause you turned over there Pulling that silent disappointment face The one that I can't bare Can't we laugh and joke around Remember cuddles in the kitchen Yeah, to get things off the ground And it was up, up and away Oh, but it's right hard to remember That on a day like today when you're all argumentative And you've got the face on Yeah I'm sorry I was late Well I missed the train And then the traffic was a state And I can't be arsed to carry on in this debate That reoccurs ,oh when you say I don't care Well of course I do, yeah I clearly do! So laugh and joke around Remember cuddles in the kitchen Yeah, to get things off the ground And it was up, up and away Still it's right hard to remember That on a day like today when you're all argumentative And you've got the face on

Arctic Monkeys are amazing. I love all their music, older stuff to the newer, slightly different stuff. But there is a king of magic about the this first album, ''Whatever people say i am,that's what im not''There is a song on that album for everyday when im feeling different, perfect mix of up beat, emotional, touching, just pure lyrical genius from the monkeys. It's a shame music seems to be all about rap & boring pop music now. Wish people would open their ears to the Arctic monkeys more.

Still remember when this album was first released and laughing like a drain at a newspaper article that had a handy section translating of some of the words like 'mardy' for the southerners who didn't understand them or at the bit where they seriously analysed the deep poetic meaning of the lyric 'got the face on' without apparently knowing every Sheffield parent has said that to describe their child's tantrums for generations.
