CW: Ableist language Because this has caused some discussion in the comments I want to clarify some things and explain some things so that you all understand where we are coming from when we talk about words that are hurtful. First and foremost, it is our responsibility (because we have a platform and most of us are in a place of privlidge), to use our platform to educate people on things they may not know about. Let's break down the word lame and why it's no longer accepted among our community. First we need to define ableism - Ableism is the discrimination of and social prejudice against people with disabilities based on the belief that typical abilities are superior. At its heart, ableism is rooted in the assumption that disabled people require ‘fixing’ and defines people by their disability. Like racism and sexism, ableism classifies entire groups of people as ‘less than,’ and includes harmful stereotypes, misconceptions, and generalizations of people with disabilities. Second, "lame" is considered an ableist word. Ableist language is rooted in ableism and is any word or phrase that devalues people who have a disability. Though often inadvertent, ableist language suggests that people with disabilities are abnormal. Casual ableist language is language that we still hear used frequently that's considered hurtful and can include using disability as an insult or as an expression. Lame is used to refers to people with physical or mobility disabilities and when we use the word "lame" to describe something as bad/uncool/you don't like/boring, it equates the sentiment the people who are have physical or mobility disabilities are bad/uncool/you don't like/boring. So it comes down to you saying "I think people who have a disability that makes them unable to walk are not cool/bad/boring." It further perpetuates the belief that people with disabilities are not as cool/good as people who don't have disabilities, which then in turn causes our society and our systems to discriminate against them. And this is just truth, you can research this on your own time, and if you are questioning this. I ask you to listen to disabled people and what they are saying about the word lame. And not just one person, you cannot take one person's view, people with disabilities are not a monolith - you have to listen to multiple people and communities. It's exactly like why we don't use the r-word anymore, and why it's slur. It's the same reasoning. I want to thank everyone who's been in this discussion and not immediately using abliest words, and willing to have this discussion. Not many people fully understand about ableist terms as disabled people are often overlooked when we talk about hate speech. Everything that I've been talking about it is because this is what I've learned from people who are disable and disabled communities. I want to spread the information I've learned because I respect what disabled people are saying and how that word hurts them when used in that way. I've been so appreciative when people teach me about hurtful language, so I want to pass that on to people too. So they can respect people that sometimes don't have a very loud voice. For those who are using other words that could be considered offensive like the word butt or coffee, those words do not describe a whole group of people. They are not the same. Lame is associated with a person's identity or their challenges, and because of that, can be interpreted as insulting or hurtful. Coffee or butt or other words that others might be affected by from their past experience is individual, not a whole group of people and are not words that are attached to people's identity. And if you've read all this and still say "who cares?" I ask you why? Why don't you care about other people's real life feelings. Why is it so hard to listen to marginalized voices and understand/empathize with them. Is one word so important to you that you are willing to justify it's usage over caring for other people? Why do you think I'm spending my time to advocate for other marginalized people. It's not because I want to be "better than anyone", it's because I truly want to make this world a better place and we do that by caring about those of us who are hurt the most by the systems in our life and understanding why it's that way and to do our best to fight against discrimination. So I really implore you to research, listen, and take the time to self reflect. And if you still don't care, then you are not making our community safe, and you aren't welcome here. I hope you can understand and thank you for listening. (Aenne)

Thank you so much for the discussion in game and the further elaboration in comment. It is not my intention to ever harm another person with my actions so why should words be any different. Like many others, I was ignorant. However, like Aenne mentioned, it is not hard to say, "sorry, I did not know and I will try to do better." The average English native speaker knows 20-35,000 words and there are over 170,000 to choose from. Now that I have learned that my previous definition is no longer valid, l will find a more suitable one in the future. My day won't be changed by this decision but hopefully someone else's will be when they don't feel marginalized by my word choice.

So genuine question as someone who knows nothing about ableist language, since the part of the limb left after an amputation is called a "stump", does that mean stumpt is gonna have to rebrand in order to avoid potentially offending amputees or is that not a part of ableist language?
@stumpt
@stumpt Жыл бұрын
I looked it up and I didn't see a usage of the word stumpt or stump as an ableist term, if you've found a source please let me know. Our Stump is in reference to a tree stump since oregon is known for trees. As is our logo is that of a tree stump. So there is no harm being done to a group of people because we aren't even talking about people, does that help make sense of it? (Aenne)

@@stumpt like I said, I know nothing about ableist language, so I was asking more out of curiosity than because I'd heard it used that way. I figured that if the remains of a cut off limb were called a stump and the remains of a cut down tree were also called a stump then some people might view that as you being named after amputees despite none of you being one and wanted to know if that was just me overthinking things like usual or if it was actually ableism.

Last episode Ash and Price talked about Careful Planning being just a positive card, but it increases your reload time by half a second. If you don't have a bunch of block moves, you're going to fire once and then die immediately in the later rounds.

Star makes so you have mutliple lower damage bullets, but they get superimposed over one another so it looks like you only have one. Effectively, this increases your damage and can also be useful with cards like Siphon that gives 50% chance to have some effect (silence for Siphon) as you get multiple simultaneous hits instead of just one.

Ok, I understand wanting to get people to stop using words like "lame" because it can be offensive if you interpret it with the disabled meaning, but at the same time I have to point out that lots of words have multiple meanings depending on context, lame being one of them where it can mean uninspired or dull. Another example of something like that would be if I said I think Ash is a nice guy, I could be saying I thought he was good natured or I could be calling him one of those people who pretends to treat women with respect just so they can get with them since both are ways people use the phrase "Nice guy". I will admit that stopping people from using lame in a way where you could interpret it as a disability being used in an offensive way will stop people being offended by it, I just don't like the logic of "This may be offensive if you view it the wrong way so don't do it in the first place".

You will never pass the purity test, as much as I enjoy watching their game play, I find them to be hypocritical and insufferable at times. They all use words and language that many would find offensive, but because it's not a part of their social justice click, it doesn't matter. Only you can control your emotions, and if others cannot don't bother changing you because they are immature and fragile.

I think the issue here, much like "gay" or "retarded" being used in the same way to indicate a similar disparaging judgement, that the origin of the word being used in such a way is rooted in negative value judgement about the words primary meaning. When the only reason the word is used to express negativity is because the condition is considered in a negative light, even using it in a context that is not directly related to literal lameness still carries derogatory implications about the condition.

I've always known the word lame to be used to refer to something as boring or dull, and I only just recently from this video discovered it has another meaning, however this logic of "words/languages change over time" doesn't make sense since the OLD term for lame was to refer to someone that is disabled, and over time the word gained a different meaning referring to something as boring or uninspiring, but now its circled back to being a rude term? the r-word makes more sense because that has always been used in some way as an offensive term, the pattern im seeing here is all old terms to refer to someone having a disability of some kind eventually turn into an offensive word, the r-word many years ago was in fact just a medical term, and more recently for example some people have been trying to set the words "fat" or "obese" as an offensive term (this may be a bad example but its all that would come to mind atm). This is mostly me just ranting and mentioning what i think i know and being confused about all this language change, i've learned the language for a reason, the words i've learned the meaning of have always meant the same thing to me. I'd also like to be clear that i'm in no way against anyone with any disabilities or differences, i just find some things like this a little silly and exaggerated sounding

As a linguist with extensive experience in sociolinguistics, I think it is important to mention that the expression, "language is always changing" is very passive, and doesn't accurately reflect the agency behind said change. Language does not just change on it's own, people change it. Specifically, people with power and influence. People with agendas. Yes, it is important not to use words that hurt people, but social engineers on the extreme right wing are creating false flag operations to make good hearted lefties fight useless fights while they keep doing actual harm. I myself am very disabled. My spine is dissolving. It sucks. But if I were given a choice between a social movement fighting to remove the word "lame" from the lexicon, and a social movement to help people like me get more robust and accessable disability programs that actually provide enough financial and other kinds of support to survive without selling what is left of my body for a paycheck every day, I would choose the latter. In short, perhaps don't be so naive. Look into the origins of the movements you support. Help create actual change that helps the people you claim to care about, not "movements" designed to do nothing but make it's participants (who are majority not of the demographic the movement is actually about) feel catharsis.

the 'recon' card (and in part 'hawk' too) are hit-scan cards. I think the idea behind them is that the projectile/bullet speed is pumped so high that they reach their target immediately. It's good for mouse+keyboard because you can have a clearer indication of the exact point you're aiming at, but I think on controller the benefit drops a little because you have to keep track of your aim more.

@@PadanGedowitch excuse me? first things first I understand that the impact and meaning behind words do matter, but you also have to realize that so does the history of words. The one pointed out in this video just happened to have connotations that I do not agree with, so I do not want to use or say it anymore. It is just a simple act of empathy, and also just basic self-awareness. Now, I’m not saying let’s abandon this word and forget it exists- as that simply gets rid of important history and lets others shove events under the rug. Also what do you mean “you people”? People with basic empathy? I just don’t understand. Also your comment was completely unnecessary, if you didn’t like what was said in this video or what I said, there’s the dislike button right on the bottom. If I said or did anything wrong, please tell me, but if what I did was “being sensitive” or some crap- kindly excuse yourself from comment section because you hate people who’re trying to be kind. Edit: Also I hate how you used whiny, when did I get offended from someone using a bad word? in fact, some people (like me) probably never heard of the meaning like me. I Just stated in my comment that I’m happy I learned something new, and if me or others trying to advocate is “whiny” to you, again you can just plug your ears. I’m sorry you feel the need to double down on your thoughts on a random strangers comment, but I genuinely do hope you grow as a better person and understand words have meaning.

In my comment did I never intended to hurt a minority or spread useless activism, just that I wanted to thank this creator for teaching me something new. I also did this because I understood that this word could have negative impact on others like some (objectively harmful) words in media. but again, my comment wasn’t written to criticize others as you may have thought. First ty Aenne for actually telling us the true meaning behind that word, but I would like to say that like even though it does mean that offensive thing, most people don't use it in that way. You said language is always changing and with that word it did change alot. I think its just one of those words were context matters because you could mean it in an offensive way or you could just mean it in the way that most people think the definition is. The other thing is, is that I don't think most people use that word much anymore in an offensive sense, atleast with the groups of people I know of and hang around, take into account im gen z, they don't really say that word much and when they do they mean the "thats boring/stupid" definition. Anyways ty for telling us the definition of that word it's always appreciated when people inform me of how I can improve the lives of others.

She held me back from anything she considered "too violent or scary" The most violent thing I saw, as a kid, was Empire Strikes Back when Luke got his hand cut off. The scariest thing I saw was... Any "family" film from the 70's and 80s. I didn't get to see any of the cool films for years. I saw snippets when I visited other ppls houses, but outside that... My mom wouldn't even let me watch anything involving Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Transformers or Batman. No joke, I had to 'sneak' watch that stuff all the time. She did not let up until Mighty Morphin Power Rangers came out on TV, when I was about 7 or 8. And even then I still couldn't watch anything R rated.

I love and appreciate Stumpt, particularly Aenne, for taking the opportunity to educate the community on the usage of words and how it can be hurtful. I admit that the first time that I experienced one of Aenne’s teaching moments, it was about the term “spirit animal”, and it was very uncomfortable for me. I was immediately filled with a sense of fear and dread, thinking about the times that I casually used that term without awareness that it could be hurtful. People don’t like to be called out for making a mistake, especially live on stream in front of hundreds of other viewers. Knowing this, Aenne made a conscious decision to use this platform to speak up for their fellow humans, and they did so with kindness and compassion. As a kid, I tried to change the meaning of “that’s gay” to mean “that’s awesome” and it never caught on. It was incredibly frustrating for me, as a child, that ppl were not willing to change (in my opinion) for the better. I thought that if I were more popular or cooler, then ppl would listen to me. I learned that I cannot change how others act and behave, but I can be more thoughtful about what I want to say and how to say it. It’s an undeniable fact that Stumpt has a wonderful community. Aenne has worked really hard, as a member, a moderator and a viewer, to create and maintain a safe and welcoming space for people to enjoy some video games together. Being a part of the Stumpt community inspires me to be a kinder human and I love you all for that.

Gonna agree actually, words can have multiple meanings, and it all depends on how you use them. Like if you're talking about a person, then she has a point, but if you're talking about an item or an event, then it shouldn't be as bad.

That was a pretty awkward moment. Words often have multiple meanings and it's the intended meaning behind the word that matters. Blocking all uses of a commonly used word because one of the meanings can potentially be used to disparage somebody is a bit extreme. It would be like saying you can't use the word "but" because it sounds like "butt" and is offensive to people who don't have butts. I am a big fan Aenne, but I disagree pretty strongly with her opinion here. This is one of those situations of people going out of their way to try to find things to call offensive that simply aren't.

It seems a step too far. Saying a show is "lame" isn't even that negative of a statement. I could call my leg "lame" without knowing the words physiological meaning and still be using it in an acceptable manner.

having been called so many names as a kid.. you just learn that you're not defined by those words and move on. if we start blocking all words.. we'll lose on communication

You can not care about about language, but then you have to understand the consequences of that. It shows you don't care or listen to what marginalized people are saying, and are choosing you care more about the usage of a word than a person's actual feelings. We are a safe space here at Stumpt, and changes like these are are necessary to continue being a safe space. For me, I will never understand why people simply say "I don't care" when me or someone else tells them something is hurtful? Why do you want to hurt people? Why take that chance? Why is a word more important than a real life person's feelings? (Aenne)

I strongly agree with Aenne, I dont get the point in using words that hurt others, other than to do just that. And disrespect usually doesn't convince people to care less about the word too...
