Of course with about every product, somebody has bad experience. So, the fact that some people didn't like the Rockwell sander isn't surprising. But, I thought I'd mention that some users report it getting excessivly hot. One reviewer said that his won't hold paper anymore because the center pad overheated and doesn't hold paper anymore.

Another good magnet trick. If you have a vacuum port on your dust collection system, put some magnets at the inlet so as you're sweeping stuff into it, any metal will get caught there.

I inherited a number of Starrett measuring tools from my father. Some of them I'm pretty sure he got in the 1940's when he worked at Douglas Aircraft before WW II, and are still accurate. But decades ago he gave me a combination square with an 18" rule. Time after time I have found that extra six inches really, really helpful. When I checked the link for iGaging, I found that they make an 18 inch rule combination set. I recommend that, whatever brand you get, you'll find the 18" rule very useful.

I became intrigued with the Rockwell sander. I checked out the price online (amazon) and then checked the 3 big box stores in my area (South Bend, IN). I found that Menards was the only one to carry it, and they were closing the out. So, I picked mine up today at just under 50% off of the amazon price. Terrible to go get something and not have the energy to play with it! Summer colds are less fun for the retired folk than younger peeps, but at least I don't have to call in sick or worry about getting something in the few hours I have the energy to move around! Also picked up chicken breast for chicken noodle soup...........

I also love my IGaging 12 inch square. Have had one for years ! Got it at Rockler Woodworkering after the name brand one they use to sell failed on me. Also have both the HF magnetic pickup tools as well, but sometimes I need one with a smaller magnet on the end to get into tight spaces. Would love to have the CRB7 router outfit ! Thanks for sharing !

One item on the telescoping magnet pickup that I would like to see is a electronic magnet that could be turned off and on. I get a lot of little cuts on my fingers which makes my fingertips very sore because of metal filings that my telescoping magnet picks along with the screws, washers and larger bits of metal. I have toyed with the idea but I am not a material or electrical kind of guy. Yes I have used gloves but all I have tested will not allow me to pick off items stuck to the magnet. Thanks James for the reviews I really liked the adjustable square alternative to Strait (sp). Also the sander may have a solution to the outer edges of the sand paper not doing as a job as the interior part of sandpaper but keeping up with two two pieces of sandpaper, I am just not that organized.

Good episode, James. The Fisch bits look a lot like the Forest City Tool bits that were sold under the Shopsmith and the Shopsmith owned brand Shopmate for years. They are available on eBay but you'd got to know what to look for because they switched to cheap Chinese bits some time ago.

Thank you Stumpy for your review of the iGaging combination squares. I've been eye-balling them for months on eBay last year and decided to not buy that tool because I had other tools to do the job, since I didnt know the quality of that company. When I started woodworking I didn't know anything about combination squares and bought a cheap one. Eventually I found out that it was slightly out of alignment. But then I got the idea of pinging the casting near where the ruler goes through, with a center punch. Not the kind of punch with a spring in it, but one that you hit with a hammer. The deformation can bring the ruler into perfect perpendicularity.

Big fan of the cool tool series. I heard on the wortheffort channel that Brad -point bits are meant to be spun counter clockwise first to severe the wood fibers and avoid that tearout. Just a thought. Thanks a lot.

Try Mirka sanders. As best I can tell they are the lightest RO sanders, they use a mesh for a sanding material, and I have not had any problems with vibration. I like mine more than my friend's Festool. More money but for these 72 year old wrists, everything I could want in a sander and I've owned quite a few others.

I had some of the Fisch (or at least Fisch style) drills, and love them. Unfortunately they don't have the name on them and over the years some have gotten lost or damaged. I've been looking, unsuccessfully, for a source. They are GREAT, and now I know where to find more. THANKS!

Just be sure you get the high speed steel ones. They are the ones with the special tips. You can only get them as single bits on Amazon. There's a link below the video. If you find the set like i showed, it's a bit over $100. So I recommend just buying the single bits you use most. Like 1/4, 5/16, 3/8. For larger than that, you may go with their wave-cutter forstner bits. They are amazing too. We'll do something on them in a future video.

Those Fisch brad point drill bits with it's different design at the tip end reminds me of a Forstner bit and how the leading edges are made that cut into the wood cleanly. I might have to try a Fisch and check it out. For random orbit sanding, I have become a huge fan of the Abranet discs. I can use them over & over & over and unless I use them for removing a polyurethane finish or some other finish that gums up when being sanded off, these discs can be blown off with an air hose and the discs look like new. Sure, they will wear out but I get a lot more life out of one than the traditional solid paper style. A bit more expensive, but they more than make up for it in the long run...at least in my opinion.

Rockwell no longer makes the sanding pads for this sander. When I didn't see it on their website, I called Rockwell and they confirmed this. Both the person answering the phone and her team manager. I thought it was a new tool, but apparently it's been around for about 9 years. It looked cool. Too back, they are likely phasing it out.

a somewhat more accurate method of checking accuracy of a square is to use some large section, say 5x5 planed and squared timber. then make a mark starting on one side and working all the way around the piece, rotating the piece the same direction each time. if your marks line up on the last corner, its good.

With reference to your testing of a square for it being "true", if you find one that is not square is there anything one can do to bring it back into alignment?
@fred_derf
@fred_derf 6 жыл бұрын
No (well not easily). Assuming of course that you don't have gunk or something messing it up. The knob pulls the rule tight against the base, if it's out of alignment the base is out of alignment and short of taking it to a machine shop and having it reground (likely costlier than buying a new one) it is what it is.

I had both I-Gaging and Starrett combo squares. Starrett is precise and easy to use. I-gaging is not as precise, adjustment knob is difficult to grab and doesn't clamp the blade reliably, hence hard to adjust the blade to a precise position. I-gaging was just frustrating to use.
