When I compare the footage here from May 1945 to the footage at kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6HYXq2necehhJI, it's incredible how within only 3 years, Hamburg was already a bustling metropolis again, despite that many buildings (including residential) were still ruins and that it probably took another 10 - 20 years to fully restore the city. In contrast, Dresden (which was in DDR and probably suffered more extensive damage than Hamburg) is still in the process of rebuilding its historic quarter, which didn't really get under way until the early 1990s, after the reunification of Germany. It goes to show both the resilience of people and cities and at the same time, the hard task of re-building after a major war. It's a shame that although there are innumerable documentaries on WWII battles, there are relatively few about how Germany and other heavily damaged countries in Europe went about reconstruction (especially in the area of housing and basic infrastructure) in less than ideal conditions. The Marshall Plan of course was a big help, but the determination of the local people (especially the women, who due to many men being killed in the war, had to pick up much of the load). PS: greetings to Hamburg! I went there as part of my vacation in 2014 and enjoyed my stay. Hopefully I'll be able to make my way back again.

When the Germans rebuilt their cities they had the good sense to restore the cultural centres to the appearance they had before the war, so retaining their original appeal. In England groups of arrogant architects took the opportunity to clear the damaged city centres and replace the old buildings with modern monstrosities. These are now considered to be eye sores or have been demolished as not fit for purpose.

You can only restore slightly damaged or burned-out buildings to their original state, but what has almost completely disappeared has gone forever and a new building had to be built. Unfortunately, what was built in a modern way after the war is not as beautiful as what was there before. The cities in particular were built to be car-friendly and completely new, wide streets were created, which completely changed the old cityscape.

I've seen estimates that 8 milllion homes were destroyed in Germany. If we assume each is worth €250k in todays money, that is €2 trillion worth of capital required to rebuild djust the housing. By the time of this surrender, Germans were hoping that the British and American troops reached them before the Russians did, and with good reason. The Russians took some terrible vengeance for the Nazi atrocities that had been imposed on them, and then put everyone in their conquered areas under decades of repression.
@callsigndd9ls8973 жыл бұрын
Hamburg was surrendered without a fight because secret negotiations between the British and Germans had previously taken place. The deployment of three courageous men on May 3, 1945 paved the way for Hamburg's surrender without a fight. Without these 3 men there would have been another murderous battle for the city, in which there would have been thousands of deaths on both sides, because Hitler demanded a fight to the bitter end. But Hitler had committed suicide three days earlier, so no one felt ready to wage another hopeless fight. There was also the risk that the Russians would not keep the treaties and advance to Hamburg and the North Sea. Stalin could not be trusted.

@ducatimonster17504 жыл бұрын

Actually Americans tried to avoid bombing civilan targets in Germany.The Americans were not inclined to bombing at night due to concerns of hitting non military targets.
