Actually Stingrays don't sting, thay actually have little barbs on their tail that they wack you with and those barbs have venom on it and it feels like a sting. Science Fact of the Day.

Since this sting ray was small, it did not hurt as bad. there was a lot of blood because the venom in the sting ray tail makes you bleed more. I am doing much better now. Wow, I never realized how perfectly camouflaged stingrays are from above the water, matching in both color and shape with how the water moves and reflects lights off its many diamond-shaped disturbances. Even this one's size seems perfect against water this shallow. Of course, I doubt stingrays adapted over millions of years to blend in from above the surface, since there wouldn't be any predators there. But still interesting.

My dad is a fisherman and since i was a child i have seen big flounders in my house. .... for me is really easy to know if i am seeing a flounder or a sting gray... ACTUALLY IS VERY DIFICULT TO SEE A FLOUNDER NEAR TO THE BEACH BECAUSE THEY LIVE MORE DEEP IN THE OCEAN... SO clearly for me it was a sting gray but this man dont know about sting grays and where they leave and enjoy to stay. and where lives the flounder...I always wear shoes when i go to the beach because i know that stings will be there... i have 30 years old and i have never been sting..... just be smart.... and watch your step. I just got stung a couple weeks ago in San Diego. I'd never even heard about stingrays in such shallow water. Had to do the hot water thing for 2.5 hours. The wound is taking its precious time to heal as well.

wow what beach did you get stung at? i was at Carona Del Mar and i was stung in the shallows as well i was about waist deep when it happened and then yeah hot water for about an hour for me and then within the next week i was feeling back to normal hope your recovery is going well and thanks for watching

@@rj32 Hi there, I was stung on Sunday at corona Del Mar. I recovered well, however it is still bruised. It's not the end of the world, however the surprise of sharp pain suddenly made us realized that the ocean is full of life and this things happens. I could describe the pain as if I had stepped on a knife or a broken glass... after 1 hour in hot water and washing well in the shower things got settled. For those out there Sting ray stung is not that bad... its just an unpredictable surprise. Regards

My young daughter was stung by a stingray in Key Biscayne several years ago. By the time we got to the hospital my daughter was begging us to cut her foot off. mfisher1967 Youch. Back in my diving days I got knifed by one on my right side in the hip. I assumed it was a Ray. It was Winter here in my part of the world and the water was too soupy to tell. I also used to get wounded by little things all the time in the colder months while crawling deep on the sandy limestone reef. I was always leaving the water bleeding. I used to think it was just reef cuts but in hindsight the pain was more intense than reef cuts and the cuts were quite deep and they often got infected. I think they were little Rays jabbing at me. But of course I could not see them in the soupy water.

It's called the stingray shuffle! Just DON'T pick your feet up. Slide the across the ocean floor. The only way they typically sting is if you step on their back. You can't do that if you are shuffling. You'll just tip them along a side and they'll scurry away =)

smither1mina it is on their tail. They whip their tail up and get you with the barb that's on the tip of their tail. However it takes a lot more than just brushing up against them for them to feel threatened. They are naturally docile creatures. But being stepped on us typically when they feel threatened enough to sting. Of course there are exceptions to every rule. But i'm just speaking in general terms.

I sure wouldn't mind having to do a little adapting...especially if it meant being able to see the Pacific, and my feet through the ocean. I'm on the East coast so my water clarity is just about nil to none in the Atlantic, and has only gotten worse over the years, sadly. The sun refracting through the water on this vid, and how you can actually see the bottom is so beautiful. If you live on the west coast, do you find that the Pacific looks like this from all areas? Are some more clear, more blue/tropical looking, etc. if you're visiting from different areas of CA?

Actually the barb is not on the tip of their tail it is probably about half an inch away from where the tail connects to the body, and also I know this because I've seen one before in real life and held it too.

I got stung in my ankle about 5 years ago. I've been going to the beach for vacation my entire life (I'm 30 now), and have always dragged and shuffled my feet in the water. But one day I was out there and lost my balance as a wave came in and stepped on one with my heel. For me the pain was unreal. It's a 1/4 mile hike in sand back up to the condo, and I was getting dizzy and light headed. I could literally feel the venom crawling up my leg into the rest of my body through my blood stream. By the time I made it to the condo to put my foot in hot water, I had my head in the toilet puking from being so dizzy lol.

Shuffling helps but it doesn't prevent them from still stinging you! I got stung in Huntington 3 hours ago...people let me tell you this no joke the pain is excruciating. I first thought I hit a piece of glass with the tip of my toe. WRONG! I have been bodyboarding for over 30 years and didn't encounter one of these denizens until today. I can tell you this I will buy a pair of surf booties! The pain has not subsided one bit. Over a dozen people were already blasted when I went to sit down. Love the ocean and bodyboarding and this won't stop me at all. Be prepared with fins or surf booties
