That's because many (if not most) of the Wideroe Arctic flights are "community-subsidised" services they provide on behalf of the central govt to keep connections for the lesser populated north of the country.

The bus he took is an airport shuttle bus - they are always more expensive than the regular public transportation. If he'd caught a regular scheduled bus, the price would have been a little less than half if buying onboard, or barely above a third of the price if using the regional bus app (thus escaping the onboard surcharge).

Yes I did a similar Nordic trip 3 years ago to what Dylan did but instead of flying from Bergen I night-trained back to Oslo (I had taken the day train over) and took a day train up to Trondheim (almost as good scenic-wise as Oslo-Bergen), and then night-trained up to Bodø and flew Widerøe from there. The fjord scenery up near Bodø is great too. And I liked the cafe on the upper floor of Bodø station too.

Another great video! What amazing scenery! It would be spectacular to see in the summer as well. The terminal at Bergen is startlingly enormous! What do they do with all that space as I can’t imagine there are ever enough passengers to warrant it. Maybe they use it for exhibitions or other events - especially that huge entrance area. Those prop jet planes are interesting to fly in, if a bit nerve wracking. It was good value for the length of flight. And the light rail is charming, bright and clean, but it must be cold with those large doors opening to that freezing air.
@eckligt2 жыл бұрын
The terminal gets reasonably full in the tourist season in normal years. I have not heard of any events taking place there. Remember also that there are cruise ships that allow passengers to embark and disembark in Bergen, and they'll typically be flown in, possibly on charter flights.

I like the Dash-8 - I actually find the window seats on the Dash-8 have more shoulder room than on Boeing 737. Using public transportation buses that call on Evenes on their way from either Lofoten (line 300) or Harstad (line 200) would have cost you less than half of the airport shuttle (current adult price for the distance is 111 NOK if using the regional bus app, 20 NOK surcharge for buying onboard cash or card), although at four departures/day on weekdays and less on weekends I believe it goes much less frequently than the airport shuttle. At the airport, public transport buses have to stop in the lane outboard of the airport shuttles.

I would add that Bodø, which you flew over, has the Northern terminus for the domestic railway system in Norway. Narvik, which I know you were departing by train, is only connected by rail to Sweden. There is talk of extending the railway from Bodø to Tromsø, passing through Narvik. This has been the wish of many people in that region for half a century, but there are currently no plans to build it. In the video, it is much easier to spot Bodø's airport than Bodø itself. But they are right next to each other. In the coming years, the airport will be rebuilt a few hundred metres further away from the city centre, to make way for more urban development. The Bodø airport has been doubling as the main airforce base in Norway until recently, when the F-16s were retired. It is also the location where an SR-71 made an unannounced emergency landing during the cold war.
