Changed alot (obviously) since I went there in 81, working at the new sewage plant next to Sha Tin race course (excellent view of it in the first part of the video). Those days it was an hair raising approach at Kai Tak airport.... what an experience!!

Thanks for your comment, I've seen some old video of that landing, fun to be a part of right? I mean, once you're safe on the ground 😊

Wonderful 🙏🙌 One of my favourite places. I remember Kai Tak airport with fondness and white knuckles when landing during the typhoon season 😂

😂 I have seen old video of those landings but I don't think it was in high winds... New underpants for all passengers upon landing
@Mark..PАй бұрын
@@mygreygapyear🤣 I was lucky enough to be in the jump seat of a Malaysian Airline flying in there (in good weather), in 95. Back in the day when you were allowed to do that.

Exactly what I remember from 12 months ago. Can't wait to go back in another 12 months time. 😊

Thanks Robert, I'm glad you enjoyed the video, I've landed and taken off a few times from Hong Kong now and that is the first time I've take that route, usually just over the water and then land.

Nice video Phil, my first ever flight was in 1976 flying into the old HK airport (Kai Tak) in between the buildings. It was on a VC10, no IFE and we went via Doha, Columbo then HK. I then flew on to Chiang Kai-Shek in Taiwan. Great memories.
@mygreygapyearАй бұрын
I would love to see some footage of that, I don't suppose there was a window mount for an old cine eight, like you say, great memories. it's easy to forget how travel has changed over the last decade even. I remember taking battery operated DVD players for the kids because there was no in flight entertainment.

It's squintillion years since I was in Hong Kong. The landings aren't quite as hair raising as they used to be. Loved the clouds at the end.

Thanks for your kind comment, I would love to go back in time and try that old landing

Great views from both your way in and out of Hong Kong. I did increase the speed when the flight attendants were talking which made me chuckle 😂.

Wow what a great video! Thanks for recording this for us! Was the first plane an A330 or something? I couldn’t tell what plane it was except the wingtip kind of looks like an airbus…the second plane was an A350 I think…sorry for sounding so geeky lol
@mygreygapyearАй бұрын
Thank you for your comment, the landing is in an A330-300 but the take off is a Cathay Pacific A321neo. I know right. I took some photos of the cabin and a friend said the cabin had a "private jet vibe".

Hi Phil I just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work but I've decided to stop subscribing as I feel the channel as gone off by a country mile from my original thoughts. All the best

Thank you too for your support Neil, I'm obviously sorry to see you go but I understand. If you were able to offer some additional insights on how you feel the channel has changed I'd really appreciate your feedback, and I hope that you'll check back in to the channel in time and perhaps there'll be a few videos that are more to your liking. Again, thank you for your support and I too wish you all the very best, Phil

@@mygreygapyear Phil, the initial concept seemed to be for the person trying to get status - a lot more how the normal guy can get it - suggestions/ideas etc. However, it seems now that it has moved onto and if you have huge amount of avios, time and enough money for exotic destinations, you too can do this. For me, what made you so original was that, I'm just your average bloke ... For me, the chances of being in the Far East are ZERO, most of my travel is only within Europe, how do I make it work there? What are the best seats you can get? How do you find bargains? Maybe I missed it and for that, I apologise but I will always be grateful for your early stuff - it was really inspiring.

@@mygreygapyear Guess you need to know your target audience. I know that you had a good run with your click bait headline but is that what we all want to see? Matts planet is less sensational and for me delivers greater advice in a less dramatic fashion

@@HannahMannah Thanks for your feedback Hannah, as you probably know I am a big fan of Matt's work and I don't for one moment consider myself as good as Matt, he is the benchmark that I would like to hit.
