Easy going, lazy, enigmatic, tactician, regular, obsessive, nonchalant, intriguing, calculated, alien. All words used by either close friends or himself to describe an artist known as Jay Electronica. Put those words or phrases together and formulate whatever opinion you want about Mr misunderstood himself. Those words or phrases that spell out his stage name couldn’t represent the fleeting MC more. In his own words, he’s better explaining himself through his raps, which is why I guess he rarely puts out music, because he hates explaining himself. But what he isn’t willing to do, I’ll do it for you. Explain. You ask yourself, “what’s an artist that doesn’t make art?” A politician? Curator? “What’s an artist that makes art and doesn’t release it to the world”? A virgo. Overly critical of self, methodical, misunderstood, lack of self confidence? You see trying to pin point Jay Electronica and understanding the fans frustration with him as an artist only lead you down a road of more frustration. At the end you tirelessly utter 3 words. “Man…what if”. Jay Electronica is one of the purest MCs of his lifetime, but sadly when he’s remembered, “if” will be the only word of explanation. Not like some of the big words describing him at the opening of this story. To say and artist qualifies for his growth to be stunted, there had to have been the ingredient of potential when they initially got on the scene that you knew, if this this and that happens, there can be no stopping them. Electronica was that guy. His name alone represents a collective of music, but fights against his astro signs that have a hard time putting them all together. If you’ve waited from 2007 to 2020 for a full length Jay Electronica album prior to its release that year you’re not impatient, you just needed proof. That every artist doesn’t create for public consumption but every artist creates at their own pace, and when it’s ready, it’s ready. I guess. But as a fan, Jay Electronica was supposed to have grown to a certain point by now and he hasn’t. Here are 3 reasons his growth as an artist was Stunted. respectfully, the fans. N**GA WHAT ARE YOU SCARED OF! Jay Electronica Stunted Growth Story Stunted Growth Story. IT'S NOT READY!

I think Jay Electronica fell in love with the buildup and hype part of the process. I can imagine it was pretty exciting to have a whole industry waiting for your art to drop. Remember people weren't just into him as a new artist but also as someone with knowledge of self. You also make the excellent point that Jay Electronica, while preparing his debut became a more well travelled, mature man. He simply out grew the drive to be a "rap star". I god bless that brother and I hope he is happy.

Quality over quantity. I don't think the man needs an album for validation. One verse or one dope song from dude is as impactful if not more impactful than a lot of other artists whole album. It's almost like fans only want an album to have something to critique. It would be a no win. Anything less than perfection would be seen as a failure. No classic album ever had the expectation of being a classic album. People literally expect this man to drop a life changing album.

The first time, I heard " Exhibit C " on a Fader Magazine compilation mixtape from the same issue in which They did a article on Him...my bottom jaw dropped...Rakim, KRS One, Nas, GZA , Killa Priest, Rass Kass, MF Doom, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, and several names popped into my mind because I have heard some of the greatest lyricists to ever be recorded...but Jay Electronica was so original and different...especially for the mid to late 2000's...even now, " Exhibit C" blows my mind when I hear it...He covers so much ground lyrically in that song ...I think He was smart enough to escape the major label plantation and remain a free agent eventhough He was and probably still is managed by Roc Nation!

Music in general is something you have to love doing and it seems like a lot of artists whether it was Prince, Michael Jackson, Biggie, 2pac, Nas or Jay Z. All these artist made or still are making great timeless music (Nas) but if it's not in your heart anymore to make music then don't it!! I think Jay Electronica wanted to be a huge hip-hop star but when he started getting famous he didn't like the fame as much as he thought he would plus he probably couldn't take the scrutiny and pressure put upon him by fans and other artists. Look at Andre 3000 he drops verses every now and then but he's basically no where to be found because in my opinion he loves hip-hop but it's just not in his heart anymore to do it. Plus hip-hop ain't what it use to be lyrics and beats aren't in the forefront it's all about auto-tune, weak lyrics (mumble rappers) and wack weak repetitive beats!!!

He's been stunted. Jay-z took the opportunity to do what no other executive had the courage to do. To truly support an artist. If Jay E is Basquiat, Jay-Z wants to be his Warhol. We should appreciate this. This is moving in the direction that music needs to go. Moving towards freedom. But at the end of the day, the fans need to get on board and stop all these shallow reviews (not yours) looking for a conveniently packaged commercial product to consume.

@@jamalthomas2377 bro even within them they don’t compare. I like those artists but without a doubt Electronica delivers the best, positive energy. Like the song he just did with westside was dope but two different energy’s that imo wrkd out. He’s just absolutely far away from everyone in the game and I don’t believe there’s anyone like him.

I remember when I was in college this was probably 2007 and 2008 downloading all of these mixtape tracks from Jay, and listening to them on my iPod all of the time. Eternal sunshine, exhibit a, and everything else he put out that was so incredible including shiny suit theory and more. I really thought he had the opportunity to be one of the greatest ever and it's a shame that we had to wait so long for an album that seemed half-baked with old tracks, he still has a gift and could still deliver a classic but will we ever get it?

I only heard of him because of Erykah Badu. I’m glad I watched this video because he seems like a beautiful soul. Maybe he just didn’t want to be affiliated with JZ and Diddy (I mean look at their history with people). Based on this video, he’s in a different league compared to them. He seems spiritually in tune and let’s face it JZ and Diddy are all about materialism.
