You NEED more ring gap!!! Two pistons in a row, same place, it's no coincidence.

He isnt drilling the hole in the back of the piston that allows extra oiling. Most 2 stroke top end kits dont come with the piston pre drilled as some bikes dont need it. I've always drilled them and get 100hrs run time between builds.
@calholli

That's possible too... but the real issue is just the rate of heat absorption.. If it's cold, and they just blast off full throttle right off the bat--- that piston is aluminum and it will heat up much quicker than that thick steel sleeve cylinder. So the piston can heat up so fast that it will lock itself to the cylinder walls --- which wouldn't be as much of a problem, except this thing has such large ports that there's almost no cylinder there -- it looks crazy. There's 2 inches of port, and then one little 1/4 strip of cylinder wall, and then another 2 inches of port.. etc.. It looks way too extreme, and should have another 'pillar in the middle of those ports, to support that ring.... Especially if the break in the ring happens to line up at one of those ports....... But you are right, the thin rings will do the same thing; heating up too fast, before they cylinder wall has a chance to fully heat soak... Because you have to heat up all the water too-- so you really got make sure you warm this thing up; Also, dragging through the snow is extreme load-- so if the block is cold, and you dump it right into that extreme load, the piston and rings will heat up so fast that they don't have anywhere to go.. You'll usually hear it bog down the engine a bit too, as the piston is swelling against the wall, all because the block wasn't warmed up yet. That's the most obvious cause IMO. Unless they are super lean or have a vacuum leak maybe. Either way, TOO much heat TOO FAST is the blatant sin here.

@@BobSmith-cb5xr A good tip but isn't required and can make the piston weak if done wrong. Pistons should last a veri long time in stock form. Either both pistons were porous metal whoch caused them to crack or the more likely thing is a too little ring end gap
@BobSmith-cb5xr
@BobSmith-cb5xr Жыл бұрын
@@MetroTubettaja Its not really a "tip". All 2 stroke pistons are designed to have that small hole drilled. The only way youd be causing a piston to crack or come apart is by drilling a hole way to big. By not drilling it is what can cause extra heat and burn up the piston and sleave.

@@BobSmith-cb5xr Tell me a single 125 etc high performance motocross bike brand name piston that has holes? If you pay 200€ for a piston you should probably get the holes pre drilled if they were a must

For the vibration you should consider trying to mod the crankshaft to counter balance the piston weight and get a cylinder head with head brace option to tighten the head to chassis. I once rebuilt my bike and didnt bother to install the brace and it vibrated crazy without the brace :D
@StonyG85
@StonyG85 Жыл бұрын
Zabel engines have a habit of tearing the frame apart if you use the head mount. They also pull the threads out of the cylinder head if the frame does not break. Dynamic crank balance and rubber mounted bars is the only way to go to reduce vibration with these engines.

Locktite is necessary on a 500cc twostroke, you need strong locktite for the screws and nuts on a 700cc with that much vibration. I think there are locktite that can stand the heat and be used on the spark plug too. For the vibration you could try and ad some foam over the handlebar grips. There is a product that is made of foam that you put over your normal grips for riding in the worst muddy conditions possible. I think they are called "Mud grips". It might help?

Looks like it cold ceized the cylinder dident have time to expand enough because of inproper warmup or the engine ran way to cold
@calholli
@calholli Жыл бұрын
EXACTLY... that's exactly what I said. That's a thick cast iron sleeve. That aluminum piston and rings will heat up much faster.. But not only that, if you look at those ports, they are WAY too wide; there's only that little 1/4" strip pillar cylinder wall along nearly the entire back third of the piston; that's nuts. It should have another pillar in the center of each port- so that it can support the rings better. I've never seen such exaggerated ports like that -- I wonder if it was a custom port job or if the "factory kit' designed them like that? It's not a good design. There's just too much open span there.

@@jvinsnes Snowmobiles; espeically Rotax engines are better anyway, with their rotary valve instead of reeds, and also with adjustable power valves. Plus they are always twin engines. A lot more engineering has gone into snowmobiles, because you end up being stranded out in the middle of know where land, in freezing cold snow-- if it breaks down.. Those snowmobile Rotax engines are also used in aviation, so they are just on a whole other level of engineering; above and beyond.

I have a couple of CR500's, and I used to have an LT500 Quadzilla, so I learned how to start big bores really easy-- so LISTEN UP: To start your bike, turn the gas on, grab your handle bars and lay the bike nearly all the way down on it's side and shake it a couple of times with the bike down low near the ground-- and stand it back up. Turn on FULL choke. Don't kick it yet, but just take your foot and slowly turn over the engine once or twice just by pushing the kicker super slow.... Rotate the engine on around until it comes to your compression stroke and you feel the compression with your foot. Then ratchet your kicker all the way back to the very top---- and jump up and KICK it really hard----------- and It WILL start every time.. You have to do everything in that order--- but it will absolutely start.. When you lay the bike over, it sloshes around the fuel in the bowl, spits a little out the overflow and stirs up a lot of fumes; so it kinda "primes" it with fuel, then when you slowly spin over the motor a couple of times, it sucks in those fumes, but without sucking in a big gulp of air yet--- because you didn't kick it hard... So then it's ready to start on your first kick. It's amazing how well it works. (Unless this thing is fuel injected; then it won't work the same. lol). I wish I was there, to show you how to start it first kick like this. Just follow every step that I said and watch it start. You can even make a video about it if you want.. because it WILL start. Another trick you can do if you don't want to lean the bike over, is to blow into the carbs overflow hose for 10 seconds. It will gurgle the fuel in the bowl, and prime it that way too.... a really nice hack you can do is to just get a manual prime pump from a snowmobile, and plumb the hose into the intake boot of the carb -- and then you can just pump that a few times and it will squirt fuel in there, and prime it that way. The main point is that this thing sucks a LOT of air, so you have to prime it with a good squirt of fuel, one way or another. Just going straight to kicking it will almost never work.

Needs more oil in the fuel. Big power two strokes love oil. 5-6oz per gallon. Minimum, ive had some like 8oz. Should be able to pull the jug when running well and find a puddle of oil in the crankcase. In your videos there's hardly any exhaust smoke. It should smoke like a diesel until on the tip of the rpm range
@calholli
@calholli Жыл бұрын
More oil just causes it to go even more lean.. They need more FUEL, not oil. I know it's counter intuitive. but adding more oil just lowers your fuel/ air ratio even more. They should have a winter jet and a summer jet setup. Because that cold air is just too dense and it leans it out. (or they have a vacuum leak).
@mastermnd22
@mastermnd22 Жыл бұрын
@@calholli this is an old argument. Race engines need a tuned amount of oil. You're not leaning out anything. Oil burns too remember.
@calholli
@calholli Жыл бұрын
@@mastermnd22 It's just physics bro. The hole in the jet is only so big and oil/fuel is a proportional mix; meaning that you can't add "MORE oil, without getting "LESS fuel.. Even if you added more oil AND put in a bigger jet, that would still give you the exact same fuel to air ratio; because you added a bigger hole, but then you filled in that extra space with more oil, so you're back where you started on the air/fuel ratio; and no, the oil is not supposed to burn at all. It's heavy and is supposed to sit in the bottom crankcase, or at high RPM's, excess oil in the crankcase will blow out the tail pipe. But if you're "burning" any real amount of oil, you're just going to foul plugs... My buddy ran Tri-Z 250cc three wheelers, and he always ran 20:1 like it said, and he kept burning holes in pistons. So I explained this to him, just like I am to you---- we started running 32:1 and changed nothing else, and it ran for 6 more years without any issues, and many trips to the dunes.. until he sold it, still running strong. I agree that you should get your stuff tuned. But you just have to be aware of how your oil/fuel mix is effecting your air/fuel mix. There's a dynamic three way happening, but it's easy to understand if you just think about it. If you think about it at the extreme-- lets say I poured almost ALL oil in your tank, and only put 5% fuel. You would only be getting a small percentage of the fuel that you should be getting; again, that just demonstrates that the more oil you add, the less fuel you are getting. It is a directly proportional trade off. So just keep that in mind. I always run 32:1 unless I'm on super slow trails and technicals all day, with a lot of low RPM riding-- then I'll run 50:1.. It keeps from collecting so much oil in the crankcase- since you're not blowing it out as often with high revs. Plus it enriches the fuel/air mix just a bit, which helps it to run cooler, since you don't have the high speeds/ high winds blowing into the radiator. Cheers.

The ring gap is too small. Top ring has expanded and seized breaking top of piston off I hope you set the gap and didn't just fit them? Even a used piston and rings must have ring gap adjusted for each cylinder. Especially if it fails twice. Also running in the cold......did it get up to correct temperature? If not you can cold seize. These engines take upwards of 20 minutes to warm up I read. When LC bikes first came out cold seizures occurred regularly until people realized this. It could be that it's not getting up to temperature in the snow? Get a temperature gauge. May need to tape over a radiator and or change thermostat if it has one. Competition engines need expert handling.😉🧠🤪💩🤮☃️🐰🍄
