This reminds me of Split second which was awesome, if you didnt review it would you mind taking a look at the game. It was pretty much GIANT action with planes crashing building falling and if the action scene was big enough the whole race track would change based off what happened.

It reminds me of Super Meat Boy, or Celeste, in a way. Because you have to string a lot of different moves perfectly in a row to beat the level and you constantly die and restart until you work out absolutely everything you have to do in the level/screen and keep re-trying until you finally nail it perfectly. And because the difficulty, while absolutely immense, always feels completely fair. Every single time you die/fail in these games, it always feels like your fault, and so instead of getting frustrated, you end up re-trying and re-trying for hours over and over because you feel like if you just concentrate a LITTLE bit harder then you'll finally beat it. It's hard in an extremely addictive kind of way. I love these kind of games. Where it's extremely hard, but completely fair. So it's immensely satisfying once you finally beat a level. Stuntman is one of the most satisfying and rewarding games I have ever played, it feels _INCREDIBLE_ once you finally beat a mission after hours of trying. You don't feel frustrated and angry at any point, you never feel like smashing your controller. Because it makes you always feel like you're right on the cusp of beating the level, even when you're not, even when you actually need quite a lot more re-tries until you nail it. Somehow it just always feels like success is just within your grasp. Just like in Celeste or Super Meat Boy and games like that. I really really wish they'd port Stuntman to modern consoles. No need for a remake or a remaster or anything like that. Just port the original game. Because I'd absolutely love to play it again. And watching this video it's clear that it still holds up. My old PS2 doesn't work anymore so I have no way to play it unless they finally do port it. There's rumours of an official Sony PS2 emulator coming to PS5, just like there's an official Sony PS1 emulator on it already that means basically zero work has to be done on a game to port it to the PS5, you just have the game's ROM and the emulator plays it. I own a lot of the PS1 games on PS5. Like all the twisted metals, and the syphon filters. So if a ps2 emulator is made available then we'd definitely start seeing games like Stuntman become available without needing loads of work done to make it run on the PS5. It'd just work automatically, using the emulator. Funny that what was regarded back then as a tech demo for Driver 3 ended up being a lot better than Driver 3. I really hope I get to play it again one day.

I played the original one with my dad all the time as a kid, and when I got an Xbox 360 one of the first games I got for it was ignition. We both played like 3 levels and were just sort of underwhelmed. It felt like a watered down version of the original game. I actually just bought a ps2 and a few classic games for my dad for Christmas last year and we spent like 2 days getting through Stuntman again. Even with how old it was, the driving and challenge feel just as good as they did when I was a kid, and sitting next to my dad at 22 years old and still playing Stuntman was something I will always cherish. The original Stuntman is pretty much timeless, I will probably be playing it for the rest of my life when I get that particular itch that only Stuntman can scratch haha!

My uncle worked at Paradigm. He was the Senior Visual Artist on Stuntman Ignition and worked on the pretty cool old game Mission Impossible: Operation Surma. One time I visited him in Dallas when I was 10 and he took me to the studio and let me play Stuntman Ignition in the testing room with the beta tester guys before it was announced or there were any ads on TV or anything. Going home and telling my friends about the awesome game my uncle was making and I got to play before anyone else outside the company, and then them seeing commercials for it a couple of months later just like I said was one of the coolest memories of my childhood. Unfortunately this was the last game the company made before it was shut down do to the financial / corporate restructuring issues aforementioned in the video.

I know I am late but just wanted everyone to know that you can disable the green arrows and overly arcady HUD in Stuntman 2. You will still get the yellow stunt markings, so the game is still perfectly playable without the HUD. It definitely is harder without it and you have to carefully listen to the director‘s comments to know in which direction you have to drive next but it feels way more in line with the first game (minus the superior driving physics of S1). I won’t recommend it if you want a 5-star rating but for a first playthrough and more immersion, disabling the HUD is great in my opinion :)

THis video definitely nails it IMO. The first game takes a really neat, specific creative vision and fully commits to it, but suffers from a fatal flaw (load times), while the sequal just kinda took the rough idea of the first game and went off and did its own thing. One thing you didn't mention is that the replay cinematography in Ignition is pretty crap compared to how polished it was in the first game. The first game the replays all felt like movie scenes even outside the context of the trailers, but Ignition used a lot of generic race raplay cameras that didn't even properly show what was going on around you. They're both still fun games in their own right though, as you said.

Really great retrospective. I bought the first game after watching this and I'm absolutely loving it. If more people had seen a review like this back in the day I think the game would have been appreciated much more. It's quite a niche game and I think the marketing at the time gave people the wrong idea about what sort of gameplay to expect. I can imagine the constant trial and error being quite jarring if you were expecting arcade racing action.

Personally, for old PS2 games with long load times, I recommend installing the freemcboot hack onto a memory card and loading the game onto an old IDE hard drive in the fat PS2's chamber that needs a network adapter to work. You can run the game on original hardware, and it tends to load games a lot quicker. It also saves wear and tear on the laser for those rare games that currently aren't compatible with software launchers like OPL. It can take a bit of doing to get fully set up, but once you do, it's great. You can play games from different regions with it, and it can play the few language hacked games out there on real hardware.

I only ever got stuck on the dreaded 2nd Snowmobile Level in Conspiracy. Other than that, I 100% the first game twice. The second game 3 times (once on the PS2, 2 times on the PS3). It's one of those games that keeps you coming back for the thrill of it. They need a third one, or at the very least a remaster.

The speedrun world record holder for Stuntman has a 'frustration meter' on their livestream overlay. I think that says a lot.

Ahhh sweeeeet!! These games are literally my childhood mate haha (my family - dad, mum and sister - would literally sit around playing for hours and seriously none of them are gamers in the slightest. But this was the one game we could share and I have super fond memories of that from when I was a kid... Plus it was soooo fucking hard and unforgiving 😂. But it made it all the more worth it when you had that perfect run.. what made the difficulty so bad though we're the load times. That's the one bad memory of this game from playing it with my family all those years ago lol, half the time was spent staring at load screens because of a single tiny fuck up hahaha) anyway yeah man, I'm, excited as to see you cover it

Damn shame the first Stuntman didn't get an Xbox port. If it did it might have gotten added to backwards compatibility like Ignition did which in turn would've fixed the framerate issues & loading times. On that note I'm reminded Ignition was a game with gold at one point, its been sitting on my external hard drive I've used for my 360, One, & now Series X, & that I should play it. I'm also reminded of the PTSD the first Stuntman caused as one of the first games I ever played xD.

one of the things i'll always remember about stuntman was its soundtrack. that intro music was wild and was the first time i bet a lot of kids like myself heard anything like that. i'll never forget hearing "let the bassline getcha! 300 pounds of pressure!"

This is one of my all time favourite PS2 games (or any console) of all time - I just watched the 10 minute promo for the latest Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning and and after hearing that Tom Cruise jumped off that cliff 6 times it reminded me of my favourite line from this game "Rememeber, if a stunts not safe enough to do twice, it's not safe enough to do once!" - crazy that I still remember that after 20 years!

You are telling me getting past the tuc tuc movie is just half the game? That's insane! I thought I had made it to the last movie but no, I just made it half the game 😅.

When you talk about that train you at 7:00 remind me of the times when I was just a wee lil youngster being told off by big smoke because all we had to do was follow the damn the train. But we all know we were tryna land on top of the train.

I’m so happy you reviewed these games! You hit it right on the head. I played both PS2 versions and I think Ignition was one of the first games I ever finished (By finish, I mean complete. No way I was getting 5 stars on everything) The original was still way to hard for me though, but eventually I grinded enough to complete them. But I still have PTSD from that damn director. “Close to the explosion!” “Reverse 180!” “Through the burning house!”

This game was my personal favourite on the PS2 and i don't fully realized it untill i bought a PS3 but kept using the PS2 just to play this one. Plus, from personal experience, this is definetly one of the most well aged PS2 games as you said in the video. A lot of times, when i go back to play an old game i haven't played for a long time, it's not as good as i remember but this one, this one always is.

This makes me think, he'd probably enjoy Split/Second. It's a completely different type of game, but it's got a similar love for bombastic car chases in action movies.

Thank you for reviewing the weirdo nostalgic games of a youth that based their game choices on how much badass imagery was on the back of the case and how many cheat codes there were listed for it in a cheat code manual. Can't wait for the long awaited Fighter Maker 2 review in 8 months.
