Got my Carcano 2 years ago for $160 out the door at cabelas because the gun vault expert didn't know shot about shit. It was a 1918 long rifle made into a TS or carbine. I told the asshat it was sporterized and worth far less than the 390 they wanted. The guy also didn't even know it needed a clip and kept telling me it was an internal magazine lol. I love fuds!

I love the 6.5 caliber but those rifles are safe from me since the surplus has long since dried up for them and new production ammo is either expensive or hard to find, especially for the Arisaka. Before anyone mentions I ain’t interested in reloading.

Fun fact, the Carcano barrels actually have progressive rifling to prevent the bullet jacket from shearing off. So the twist rate increases the further down the barrel you get, which would also cause problems for carbine conversions if you tried to just cut down the original barrel

Maybe you should also know that Lee Oswald was a qualified Marine Sniper - he also fired three shots, one missed after clipping a stop light on the road. As for a magic bullet - the seat Governor Connolly was sitting in was much lower in the car than JFK's. He got hit by a bullet that had already gone through JFK on a decending trajectory.

I just bought one of these last year. I purchased it from a retired school teacher. He said, 'I will sell it to you, what I paid for it.' I asked what was that? He stated '12 bucks'. He had picked it up from a barrel(actual wooden barrel) of milsurp back in the 70's. He just bought it to try the Oswald shots. Then it found it's way to the back of the gun safe. But I think it is awesome. I love bolt action milsurp guns.

11 battles in offensive with massive advantage in both: artillery and men - no breaktrough. 1 battle in defence - complete breakdown. This is not a point for the Carcano at all. But even if the Italian Army would have been equipped with ARs: They would still have managed to lose due to complete and utterly retarded aristocratic generals still fighting the battles of 1805 by slaughtering their brave subordinates.

Spot on about most people who make the claims really do not know how to fire a bolt action. I remember about 40 years ago one of the US networks tried to recreate it, and their "expert" could not. And I was screaming at the camera as he removed it from his shoulder each time to work the bolt. The rifle could easily do it, he could not because he did not know how to rapid fire a bolt action rifle. This rifle would not have been in production for over 50 years and in use for over 90 years if it was a "piece of junk".

Some random comments: The ammo used in Kennedy situation was part of a lot produced by Western Cartridge Corporation in 1950's for a planned, then aborted operation to liberate Albania with surplus sold on civilian market. High quality and well made (w/ .268" bullet). The M38s ("fucile corto' , short rifle) were marked 7.35 on rear sights, with the reverted M38/41 (not to confuse with M41 long rifle) marked 6.5 on rear sight. The 7.35 bullet was a true .300" bullet, and currently in the 'unobtainium' realm, although occasional small quantities surface. Oswald rifle had black dyed stock, possibly indicating it was assigned to guard or ceremonial units, as opposed to combat unit, meaning it had not been heavily over fired, thus Oswald gun likely had a good condition bore. To about WW1, Carcanos had progressive rifling in long rifle versions, with slow twist gradually speeding up, theoretically reducing initial pressure and also stabilizing long, thin bullet. This was an expensive process, and ultimately Italian ordinance realized gains were't worth effort and went to standard rifling. Cut down barrels, especially in 'bubbafied' (sporterized) examples of progressively rifled versions, upsets twists and results in poor accuracy/keyholing etc.

Thanks for making this video; for a while now I've felt that the Carcano is often unfairly denigrated. I've owned a few over the last several years and I find them pleasantly simple with great handling in terms of weight and balance, much better than most of the other milsurp bolt-actions I've owned. That said, I did formerly own an older M91 cavalry carbine (since sold to a friend) which seemed to have an out-of-spec extractor, given that it would often fail to hook into the extractor groove in a cartridge when pushing the bolt forward and thus cause a feeding malfunction, especially when trying to cycle the bolt very quickly. That said, all of the other Carcanos I've owned have cycled perfectly reliably, so I'll chalk it up to an issue with that specific carbine and not necessarily Carcanos in general.

you're one of the few non italian youtubers that actually knows about carcano rifles, here few little info that you actually missed to say: the 91ts and 91 cavalry existed already in ww1 and never had a big accuracy issue, the cut and shortered version was the 91/24 produced juat for 4 years before the 91/28 started to be made (the exact same as a 91/24 but made ex novo insted of cutting shorter old 91) in the 30s there were in italy a contest for shoters, the guy who won managed to hit 4 targets at 200m with 4 shots in 6 seconds (much faster than lho) (I can give more info of this competition if someone wants) last thing is pronounced càrcano not carcàno but almost anyone says it wrong
@wingracer1614
@wingracer1614 4 жыл бұрын
The accuracy issue isn't with Italian made carbines, it's with long rifles that were cut down into carbines or sporterized by civilian surplus owners years later. They had gain twist rifling so if you cut a third of the barrel off, you no longer have the same twist rate. I carbine barrel that was actually made to be a carbine barrel to begin with will have the right twist so no problem there.

@Cloudstrife112233
@Cloudstrife112233 3 жыл бұрын
The thing with the rifles that were cut down to carbines, is that the rifles used gain twist rifling that was designed for the barrel length of a rifle, so when they cut them down, it messed up the accuracy of the carbines. If you see a carbine with the rifle sized sights, that is the one to avoid (if you're only looking for accuracy at the range) the other two sight setups have rifling that is tuned right for carbine length.

I recall mentions that some new ammo made for the Carcano had undersized bullets because almost all 6.5mm (Arisaka, Swedish) are 6.7mm and the Carcano uses a larger 6.8mm bullet and therefore caused accuracy problems, but that new better ammo is now available. OK next to a video on how all old Army bolt action rifles were sub-MOA match grade weapons or the AK47 was designed to be made with some old bits of wood, a piece of sheet metal and old piping.

My Dad was a gun dealer back in the day and used to get many milsurp rifles in the late ‘50’s and early ‘60’s delivered mail order straight to our home, pre ‘68 so no FFL required. SMLE’s, Garands, 1903 Springfields, Arisakas, K98 and older M98 Mausers, etc. The cheapest of them all was the Carcanos and the at the time lesser known Mosin-Nagants at only $19 shipped, so that’s probably where the dissing started. The old joke about the milsurp Carcanos was “Never fired, dropped once!” 😉 At gun shows they used to sell them with a crate of 6.5x52 and a little book with blank pages called the complete book of Italian Army war heroes. 🤭. Ok, mean I know, but this was like 15-20 years after the war so you have to understand the sentiment of the time. I fired more 6.5 Carcano ball than anything, fun but not super accurate, and it was years later before only the Mausers and Garands started to accumulate any value. Cracked me up the Carcano had a ladder sight adjustable to 1000 yards as I recall, hopelessly optimistic. I wish I had just a fraction of those rifles now. FYI, back then you could buy a top of the line NRA Excellent Garand for $100 shipped, and they were virtually unfired.

I think the myth that the Carcano is a piece of sh*t also comes from people looking at Italian Armor and other equipment in WW2, “the Italians couldn’t make a suitable tank so therefore they couldn’t make guns well” that sort of thing

Just a few Carcano crums....Yep, many M1891 infantry rifles were cutdown into TS style carbines in the 1920s. These are designated as M91/24, and can be spotted quite easily as they are the only carbines with a long rifle style rear sight (the notch itself has been moved down though). After the adoption of the 7.35mm cartridge, Carcanos were marked with their caliber ontop of the rear sight. 6.5mm, 7.3/7.35mm, and 7.92/7.9mm. Most of those chambered for 8mm Mauser were actually done after WWII and then sold to Egypt. Also many of the Carcanos used by the Germans were still kept in 6.5mm. And finally, while I know the OP knows this, just for others, to feed a Carcano you need an en-bloc clip. Without it, you have a nice single shotter. Best rule of thumb, if the Fuds say a firearm is junk, run out and try and find one as its probably awesome, cheers.

Havnt ever had a bad experience with my 1942 Calvert carbine and it looks and shoots fantastic you wouldn’t even guess it was as old as it is by looks and the bore is outstanding but they are reliable and accurate I bought mine when I was 16 at a gun show for 80$ and it came with its an original sling and 6 Nblock clips can’t really find any fault with the gun after the 3 years I’ve had it in 19 now and it remains one of my favorites

Precision is irrelevant without accuracy. If it isn’t zeroed, and you don’t know how to compensate for the 26 factors that can move a point of impact off that zero, then you can’t hit diddly squat.

I’ve got a 7.35 marked SA (Finnish)...it had a mountain scene complete with trees and reindeer carved into the stock and at the time before the internet (50 years ago) I had no idea it had been issued to a Finnish soldier so I sanded it off like a stupid 15 year old would do to bring it back to the “military look”...after I found out it’s history, I regretted doing it 🙁...when I bought it, if remember correctly I gave $15 for it and a paper bag full of 7.35 ammo and clips. It is still a good shooting little rifle, but I’m down to under 40 rounds now. Years ago I found two 100 round boxes of 7.35 (true .300 diameter) 130 gr. FMJ bullets. LEE still made dies and I bought Norma brass to reload...reloading made for a very accurate rifle (it shut up quite a few of the”it’s a piece of shit” know it alls)...if the bore is good they are excellent rifles.

They're also progressively rifled I'm pretty sure. By chopping down the barrel you cut out the final bit of rifling that actually imparts the proper and final spin on the projectile to properly stabilize it. It'd be the equivalent of taking a 1 in 9 twist 20" AR, shooting the same 67 gr bullet, but now using a 14.5" 1 in 18 or 1 in 20 twist.

Sorry, I am late commenting on this, but hey I just found it. I happen to own a Carcano and have killed a moose with one, and did it with one shot. I chambered the second round but did not need it. So with that said the firearm is far from underpowered. In fact, the only time it has malfunctioned was usually because I forgot to clean it right, or short stroked the action. I have had and used this weapon for over 20 yrs now, and the ammo is a little difficult to find sometimes but not impossible. All in all my experience has been great with the Carcano.

Privi Partizan sells .268 bullets there is a good chance that there 6.5 carcano uses that same bullet. Progressive gain twist rifling changes the rate of twist so the result of making the Carcano M91/24 was to make the barrel shorter and thus change the final twist rate. As another oddity post war was a cut down long rifle to a non standard sometimes referred to as a "Supremo" with as I recall a 20" barrel I have one since it has little or no collector value I rebulbed it using at home cold blue. If you follow the instructions precisely it comes out pretty good (used the extra dark ver)

In my personal experience, I know for certain I could have made that magic shot with my old No.4 Enfield .303 with the micrometer aperture sights likely with ease. That being said, the slowest bolt gun action I've ever tried to rapid fire from was a K98, or sorry, a yugo m48, but whatever, still, just about any bolt gun action in mil surp rifles can be manipulated very quickly the Carcano being no exception I'm sure. If I can get 5 aimed shots off with a 91/30 in under 13 seconds, I'm sure a Marine that had been handling the Carcano platform for a good long while beforehand would have no problem palming a cock on open bolt with some speed. I qualified expert too with an A2, it definitely makes a difference with an M16/M4 when your chances of flinching from recoil anticipation and your sight picture doesnt move after each shot opposed to knocking your sight picture off taking a full power cartridge to the shoulder and then working a bolt, then reaquiring a sight picture on the clock. Again you hit the nail on the head.

Hey mike, can you do a video about mailing guns home from deployments and stuff like that? I don't know a lot about how that stuff works but i remember hearing stuff like "my grandpa/dad mailed home an AK 1 piece at a time in Vietnam/desert storm/iraq" back in school and always kinda sounded like bullshit. Is there any truth to that sort of thing? I'm talking more common era than ww2 and stuff like that. Like how do guns as bring back trophys work now, is it still even a thing? Maybe this is a dumb question but I don't wanna be ignorant i guess.
@wingracer1614
@wingracer1614 4 жыл бұрын
It's no longer a thing, at least not legally. To do it post Vietnam, you would have to smuggle it in somehow like mailing it a piece at a time or some such. I've heard of a tanker doing it with a Luger he found in Iraq by stashing it in a storage bin in his tank before it was shipped back to the states and fishing it out back home.

The biggest reason that the Carcano is considered a piece of crap is because it was being compared to the Mauser 98. 1) The split rear receiver bridge makes scope mounting a PITA. 2) The cocking piece doesn't have a flange to direct gasses away from the face in the event of a case breach. 3) The smaller diameter of the front receiver ring makes a burst receiver more likely in the event of a bore obstruction. 4) The extractor design is much weaker than that of a 98. 5) Italian metallurgy & heat treatment precision was terrible during the time that the Carcano was made. 6) That bottom metal is ugly as f***, on a converted civilian sporter.
