Well, there's 2 rounds of Steam Awards voting. First round is nominations. You can pick any 2023 game. Hell, I nominated an Indie game called "Cassette Beasts" for the most innovative gameplay, because I do believe that game was amazing. For Starfield to have gotten into the nominations like it did, it had to have gotten enough votes. Clearly, it did. And I think it was the only mainstream game there, but it does mean it got more votes than most other 2023 games... While I personally voted for Remnant 2, phenomenal game, I'm surprised Starfield was even nominated, let alone winning. Mostly negative Steam reviews are the recent ones... The overall still stis at mixed with many positive reviews. I don't think it's a troll vote per say, and I think the RDR2 vote for labour of Love was due to big KZbinrs like Act Man playing it first time in 2023 and probably praised it, causing many to play it for the first time and liking it... Not knowing it was abandoned.

Not that I have anything against Remnant 1 or 2, but if I recall correctly, the largest issue with the sequel, was that it wasn't all that different from the first game? Not saying Starfield deserved the win, but I am unaware what gave the games, their different nominations, but my mind jumps to stuff like the Nemesis system or the monsters from MH.

I voted for Starfield because i never heard of or played the other games, it'd be stupid of me to vote for something I've never experienced before. Plus, IMO, Starfield does have pretty innovative moments, especially with its NG+ mechanic. That could've just been a menu option and say "cool you best the game! Here, try this!" And give you bonuses, higher difficulty, and a completely fresh start option in the main menu like how games like Batman Arkham, God of War, Spider-Man Remastered, etc do. The fact it was instead tied to the story seamlessly and acts as a continuation is rather neat. Does it directly deserve the award just because of moments like that? Maybe not. But it also shows it's not devoid of creativity and, being the only game there I knew of, it was my pick. Yet now my vote is being considered a "troll" because PS fanboys still can't get over the game.

I did have a love and hate relationship with Starfield at the start. But over the holiday I understand now how to play this game. And I do enjoy it now. But I was also one that did like No mans sky from the start. We cant love everything in gaming, than I think my brain would go out of control 😅

Okay. I can go with trolled. When I saw they had won, as a PC user since the 90's, my eyes rolled. As for the console stuff, as a PC user since the 90's, it's like watching grade school antics. The PlayStation Network and Steam are on opposite ends of the spectrum.

To be honest, I don't ever remember a time where people were not wanting to use Steam for they're Microsoft games. Actually, I only remember the opposite. From the beginning of time people have only wanted to use Steam. If only Steam existed, there would be no loss to the industry. Anyways, lovin' the new format.
