My grandmother survived the tri-state tornado of 1925. She was 10 and talked about it the rest of her life. They had NO warning. She said the common person didn’t know what a tornado was. She also remembers watching her town, Murphysboro, IL burn throughout the night. Those horrific images were always sharp in her brain to the point that even though she is gone now, I can tell her stories.

We are shielded from most tornadoes and the lake effect snow. ❤ In my 60 years I think there's only been 1-2 tornadoes in the valley I live in and the one was in a wooded area without human habitation. It just took down some trees. The other, which may have been strong straight line winds, took a roof or 2 off and did some damage to 2 commercial buildings. That was one of the 2 strongest giant sub vortices within the tornado. They were like the larger, main tentacles of a squid. Widest, fastest, and most powerful. The first one was the one that impacted the Tornado Hunt Team convoy on highway 81 as they raced south, and killed the TWISTEX team on Reuter Road. It grew to a size of about 600 yards, right as it raced towards the TWISTEX team, stalling on top of them for 20 seconds. The second sub vortex that slingshot on the south side towards Simon Brewer, Juston, Drake, Jim Bishop and Jesse Duncan as they raced east on Interstate 40 had a gust up to 255 miles an hour, right as it accelerated to 176 miles per hour. It took just 2 or so seconds to reach the highway.

Man the science behind this is amazing. 94.6 mph. Incredible. Also - what the Pilger EF4 did was to kind of prepare for becoming a satellite of the East Pilger EF4, and once that one decided to become obsolete, it just went "Nah, there's another tornado developing to the east, let me just scoot over there so I can become a satellite for that one."
@goodguyguan34127 ай бұрын
Satellites orbit and inevitably get consumed by the anchor rotation because they don't have the forward momentum or power to break free while they're also losing energy to the anchor, this one didn't orbit, mostly stayed on path, and eventually roped itself out after being near two other tornado paths. The circulation of the 90mph was way stronger than the other two inside the mesocyclone to the point it had to reach the end of its cycle JUST to get slingshot like that. Which is prob why they proposed it as the fastest

@@courtnayhayhayyy Tim and Paul Samaras and Carl Young all died in the El Reno tornado, yes. They were known for being incredibly experienced, and El Reno currently holds the record for biggest tornado ever recorded, with wind speeds over 300mph. They are the only chasers to have died actually by tornado, and if you're on tornado youtube for long, every time they're mentioned there's usually folks in the comments praising their work and mourning them. We know roughly what happened mostly from Robinson and the fact that the Samaras' video camera was recovered and some footage was able to be analyzed - we know that they thought they could outrun it east, not realizing that they were already in the tornado itself - and Skip has a good video on his channel analyzing what happened. (It's his Safety Lessons from El Reno video, about an hour and twenty minutes long.) They died doing what they loved best, and the chaser community honours them for it, and learned a lot from their lives and their deaths.

An honorable mention, and possibly the actual record holder, would be a very obscure F4 tornado that touched down in Germany in July of 1891. It was said that the tornado covered a distance of 20km (just under 12.5 miles) in only FOUR MINUTES, making the *average* speed of the tornado nearly 190mph. At full song, this thing was probably hitting somewhere in the ballpark of 240mph, and it still completely destroyed the town of Anrath on its way.

I remember my great-uncle talking about the great tri-state tornado; he and my grandfather were working at my great-grandmother's farm when the sky turned yellow, and shortly afterward pieces of trees, bricks, sawn lumber, feathers, and other stuff started falling from the sky. He and his wife drove down to Murphysboro, where they used their car for an ambulance, and they worked for days searching for survivors and trying to help. The most "extreme" tornado in recorded history was the Tri-State Tornado, which spread through parts of Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana on March 18, 1925. It is considered an F5 on the Fujita Scale, even though tornadoes were not ranked on any scale at the time. It holds records for longest path length at 219 miles (352 km), longest duration at about 3½ hours, and fastest forward speed for a significant tornado at 73 mph (117 km/h) anywhere on Earth.

I visited a few days later and the damage was unbelievable. I also visited my grandmother that was another 15 miles northeast. Hank, as one of your Patrons, and after watching the 1925 reenactment Tornado video for the Umpteenth Time, I felt the need to tell you that I lived EXACTLY in the Path of this Tornado in 1970 - 1976. I lived in a Mobile Home. As a pilot I had access to the weather from the Teletype at the Airport located 1 mile from my location. If I even remotely analyzed a potential for a weather disturbance, I relocated to another Pilot friends brick home. Yes, I am a scaredy cat

Thankfully I live in a mobile home on the eastern side of the Appalachians. The mts block much of the wind and worst weather from the west. Tornadoes are very rare in the valley here. I know there was one for sure when I was a kid, that went through a wooded area only, no homes. Stay safe out there folks. Mother nature is never to be underestimated. 🙏❤

It's hard to imagine that the Pilger tornado moved faster than the _windspeed_ of a lot of tornadoes, not even mentioning how fast that sub-vortex was hauling in the El Reno twister. Good God man, I've never even _been_ 90 mph before!

Just imagine being on an electrical Amtrak Train in the Northeast Corridor but slightly slower. They average a top speed of 110.

14:00 when you see some of those chaser beacons not moving after the tornado passed sent a chill down my spine. RIP to those who died doing what they loved.

One of those was Twistex, the other was Richard Henderson. Tim, Carl and Paul were professionals. Richard was an amateur who died while taking a selfie with the tornado. Something Tim would never, ever do when he was alive. Twistex was trying to escape, not seeing out an opportunity to get a selfie with a killer tornado.

Brings up a good question. If you are suddenly passed by Pecos Hank while driving in stormy weather, do you speed up and follow or do you reverse direction?
@Rosinantea4 жыл бұрын

@@TheTibetyak On one hand he's smart and is good at predicting where the tornado will go, on the other he's also gonna head straight toward it and has a car designed to withstand tough weather.. so.. tough choice

This channel is making me feel blessed. The fact that all these people bought about these discoveries for random people to be able to discover on a average Tuesday for free. Thankful for all the work you guys put together for society to view. As a kid I would read about tornadoes in books from the library and always wished I could see more pictures and everything was out of date too. Or the news would show an important tornado with little to no visual of it and it was so frustrating cuz I wasn't sure what I was looking at lol. Now I can find so much footage and the breakdown of them on this KZbin channel. Ugh. I won't ever be a scientist or a storm chaser like I wanted as a kid. But I do love watching storm videos and appreciate all the work that goes into them. It's just pretty cool. Thank you.

The lower speed winds risky enough if out near shore in sailboat. Guess I'd dive underwater and loosen grip from boat before it is drawn out of water. Standard practice is 'stay with the boat if capsized)

I’ve never seen a tornado in real life, as in my country we don’t see them, it’s wonderful to live in these times and learn about this meteorological phenomenology. Nature makes you humble! Congratulations to the team for producing this content!

For the longest time I truly didn’t know that an abundance of tornados was almost exclusively an American problem. I always kind of assumed everyone had them in such numbers

Living on the east coast, I've never seen a tornado, and the ones we usually get are F 0-2, and wrapped in rain. I would love to see a mid-west tornado, from a distance.

I remember in the mid South on New Year's Eve a triple tornado storm actually broke 3 old records at once Distance set by the Tri-state tornado was broken by one of them. Wind speed was broken by a second. And damage dealt was done by a 3rd.
