Based on 8-Bit Guy's "The worst VIC-20 I've ever seen video" and some other anecdotal evidence, I think a repair video of the fire-damaged console would be well received. I know I want to see it.

For Marks case it’s a lot worse. It’s not just marks, dirt and scuffs to deal with but also the fact that the shell has been melted. It would be better to find or make a replacement shell for this. I would message a company like RetroGameRestore to make a shell for this. They make shells for the SNES, Megadrive, PC Engine and the Famicom. They can easily make a shell for this as a limited release.

I can't tell what there's more of in this video: retro console content, or distilled retro console satire. Either way, clearly you need to tell Mike his console is irreparable, but that you are happy to 'recycle' it for him, giving you the freedom to take that amazing case (and controller) and restore the working, burned console. I think it's earned it.
@RubyNemesis Жыл бұрын
You should fix up the burnt one and modify its case just enough that the ports and switches function, so that it's playable, but otherwise keep it looking like it does now and it'll be a nice conversation piece like that gameboy that survived a bombing in the gulf war.

@electronraygun6346 Жыл бұрын
The clean console likely had a failed RAM IC, the pulsing was probably the regulator cutting in and out due to over current. Sadly, the all import Gate Array ASIC is probably dead now :-( You might get lucky replacing the faulty RAM but usually those symptoms are curtains for the ASIC. The Salvador Dali console is super duper fine! You can't get composite video out of the GX4000 so what you are seeing is the sync signal which is a bit out of spec and confuses modern TVs. A SCART cable will fix that! I'm sure of it. Either way, video is RGB or RF only. You can mod for composite but the audio signal is mixed with the composite feeding the modulator. My recommendation is to use the console via a good quality and beefy 5v PSU. I would forget the SCART. I would use the monitor output instead with the appropriate cable. I've had 2 of these machines die when plugged in via the SCART output. Both times I got a mild electric shock from the SCART shielding and both had failed ASICs. I have used my current GX4000 through 5v and monitor port for years now without any issues.

You must plug the power lead into the console before you connect into the mains and turn the power on. I think it's an earth thing. They put warning stickers on the boxes after a while as so many failed due to this and is almost certainly why the clean one is dead. There are some good homebrew and ports out there if making your own carts and a multi cart

That Lord Sugar quality. I suggest breaking the board out that poor molten shell and fixing up the board and maybe doing a 3D printed case for it? Maybe you can do some mods to make it a full Amstrad with a keyboard and disk drive? As for the non fire damaged one, can't hurt to look inside.

I would probably view the fire board as a donor board for the other (If needed), and as a repair project as a secondary aim. Whilst it may be good to see it work again, it could have hidden faults so there is more value in repairing the clean board imho. I'd start with pulling the board from the fire damaged unit to clean it/try and stop further corrosion, and then check for damage. And examine the clean board. I suspect a bad cap on the clean unit that's causing a cold boot situation. Probably still not getting enough volts through to components to fully boot even with the led lit.

Fix them both, obviously :) the melty one could either be carefully fixed to maintain the current appearance (maybe lacquered over) OR do a post-apocalyptic type mod on the case, so scrub it clean as you can, and get it working again, but only with reused components scavenged from your junk bin, so maybe the power switch gets replaced with a chunky 240v rated toggle switch off a vacuum cleaner, and the melted controller sockets get swapped for an old serial port off a broken motherboard. Thanks for entertaining us all, look forward to whatever's next :)

I have an old Atari 2600 that was in a fire that makes that Amstrad console look like it is new. Yes, that still works as well. I say go for it and see if you can repair both. I'm sure you can find a workaround for the stuck power switch and controller ports.
@peterwarner9572 Жыл бұрын
You've got to rescue the 'fire' console. Maybe 3d print a case of some sort and make it a custom build? Perhaps choose a colour scheme for all fire rescue machines - most of the cases will have to be replaced or painted, so maybe have a 'fire' collection that's all custom painted and badged in a certain way?

Wow it works! Would not recommend using it without replacing all caps and verifying the power delivery circuitry, etc. The caps are clearly operating out of spec, thus the overly blue screen. You could buy a non-working unit and move this restored working PCB inside.

Surprised that it works. The shell will have to be scrapped, the motherboard will need a clean with new caps and a new regulator. As for the shell you can make an acrylic case or send Retro Game Restore a message to make a shell for this. They have one for the SNES, Megadrive, Famicom and PC Engine. I’m sure they can easily make one for this but at a cost. I would love to see a GX4000 in clear shell.

"Many problems are solved with a wiggle in a slot" And some are created by... Oh, look! No video signal from the console! Now... that console.. CLEAN. THE. BOARD. If you power it on before you do, I will find a canoe, paddle ALL the way over there, and wallop you on the head with my hat. Recap everything, and if a board is mangled, I'd say to do a transplant- have new boards made, and everything you can (and need to ) transfer, like chips, etc. You have a clean case, a controller, etc. Not only that, but you''ll have spare parts. Now- as to why I'm saving the melted one..? I think that one deserves to be saved. You didn't deserve it being turned to slag, and you'd probably rather *it* working (Having had a Pi 4 stolen, I can relate). Think of it as therapy. Plus- think of the views!😁 "Resurrected from the ashes of destruction..." The switch on the cleaner one- *might* be either a faulty switch, or your old friend the capacitor, Or even a loose solder joint, (maybe a screwy track) that once it got warm enough, a connection was made because of expanding metal. As I am allll the way over here (looking at canoe rentals 🙃), and you have all the fancy tools- You get to figure it out. I say to use the working console, get it into the better case, etc- and make a spare parts bin.
