Here is my latest creation which is designed to be as small as practical and super tough for outdoor pursuits. 520mm long and 19mm diameter weighing about 2.5 K, it still sounds like a "proper" hurdy-gurdy

Will you be offering this model soon? This is exactly what I've been wanting to find! I love my gurdy, but I'm always concerned taking it out and about that I might damage it. This is perfect, and sounds great!
@nwbrook6 жыл бұрын
No plans to make more really, the fun is in the development but having said that, never say never ! I have a 9 month waiting list at present . Rory may be taking one of them - it was his idea after all - but the other one (d/g) will probably come available soon. Price wise, it’s got to match the basic Wren. Less work in some areas, more in others.
@nephilimkaishaku6 жыл бұрын
Neil Brook, thanks for the reply, if it comes up for sale, I'd love to take it off your hands just as soon as you're willing! Thank you again! I've emailed you a bit earlier about it as well and the D is just the one I'd love to give a home to. Cheers!

That is extremely cool. Any chance that, instead of actually making the instrument to sell, that you might make the plans available for purchase?
@nwbrook4 жыл бұрын
The issue is that there’s a lot more to making a successful gurdy than following a plan will provide. It’s all about the geometry and fine setting up details. I have an ebook available which describes in detail the build of my Wren model with some essential dimensions - with that, you have the information to build a gurdy to any shape you want ! I also have a double dvd which follows the build of a guitar bodied instrument from start to finish. Details are on my website ( hurdy-gurdy.org.uk) .

Wow, impressive sound for this practical size!

I guess it's more like 190mm diameter ;) But a very nice and transportable idea, and knowing your build quality, something very robust, too!
@nwbrook6 жыл бұрын
Aethelreth Being elliptical in section, # 1 and# 2 are 170 x 180 x 520mm. When I get time, #3 will be a bit bigger at 180 x 210 x 520mm which is the maximum size from the gutter. Ill see then if there is enough extra bass response to make the bigger size worthwhile.
@Aethelreth6 жыл бұрын
I really like your ideas as with the NRG - and i LOVE my luteback from 2002 out of your workshop ;) But i was more poking a bit of fun at your description of just 19mm diameter up in the video description :) And it's a pity you're up in Lancaster and not coming down southwards towards like the hurdy gurdy weekend in Halsway. Would love to meet you one day somewhere!

As it happens, I’ve recently written an ebook about the design and construction of the Wren. The build is the same, just the gutter bit to work out. My website has the details.

is there a plan for this available?
@nwbrook4 жыл бұрын
Kenny Grisham No plans sorry. The build is based on my “Wren” model so my ebook which gives important sizes and a detailed description of the build may be of interest.

@@nwbrook I would agree but I'm too impatient most of the time. I'm just trying to get a mental picture of the construction at this point. I've never seen one other than the internet. I'm just about there. Thanks again. Since you're retiring, is there an issue with selling this model?
@nwbrook4 жыл бұрын
Kenny Grisham Patience is an important skill when building Gurdies. A lot of thought needs to be done initially. I have stopped taking orders and while I don’t mind people using my ideas, it’s probably not a good idea to sell your builds as “Wrens” - reading the book is better than nothing but won’t instantly give you my 40 years of gurdy building experience !
@mikemurphy87144 жыл бұрын
Would you sell one?
