As a commercial grouper hook and line and spearfisherman, this was awesome to watch. Nice fish! This looks a lot more relaxing than grouper fishing. My only thought about doing it differently was I’d hate to have the gaffs y’all have. I’d want a gaff that was about 4 to 5 feet long with a three inch double bevel hook from sea striker or aftco. They are a lot easier to manipulate than what you have there and would make landing the fish a whole lot easier and a more sure thing. We gaff almost every fish we catch. Great video.

Such a great success of over 95 years of conservation and careful, sustainable harvest has produced such lunkers in Winnebago and some other lakes like Poygan. I once accidentally caught a sturgeon on Poygan and brought it to the boat (after quite the fight) so we could control it for hook removal. Thing was as long as our boat. It felt like wet sandpaper and its head was hard as wood. They are amazing creatures. Did you know that you can volunteer to help watch the sturgeon during the spawning run? Protection against poachers and getting to see the fish up close and personal in places like the Wolf River!

Devon Butler to each their own! Like Bryce said it creates a ton of revenue for the DNR and a bunch of small business’s around the area. The sturgeon population in the Winnebago system is very high and there are quotas set in place every season. The fish are delicious and it’s a very unique opportunity. Just an overall good time for everyone involved so it is something Jake and his family have done for a long time and will continue to do. Like he mentioned in the video check out the video from 2018 and it might give you a better understanding of what’s going on.
