I tend to use spearmen because to my mind, Sturgia is really well suited to hammer and anvil tactics, the shielded infantry just neeeds to hold the line while the shock troops and calvery do most of the actual killing, all they need to be able to do is take a beating.

I like to mix them with a ratio of 1 spearman every 3 axemen. They perform really well that way in my experience.

Against cavalry, I found that the most reliable unit is the elite menavliaton. They are also great against infantry. Most infantry units will do alright if you put them in a thick blob formation like in 2:11.

I've noticed that the Darkhans do a good job with cavalry. Well, they always seemed to do it well. Perhaps this is due to the improvement of AI for cavalry and a more passive defense-oriented infantry AI, almost all spearmen began to perform worse in battles with cavalry. But maybe I'm wrong, I just shared my observations.

when i was testing the best cavalry, the aserai veteran infantry generally got the most kills from all shield infantry units. Sometimes the wildlings too, but the veteran infantry were more reliable

In general you want a mix of axe and spearmen, but slightly more axe men, the spear men are stupid tanky and the axe men deal good constant damage. Put some line breakers in there and you have unstoppable infantry. Sturgian infantry will shred the best of cavarly even out number in a huge square formation witht the right balance as even khans guard being as stupidy unbalanced as they are will get stuck in the mass and get minced.

How to get mercenary units 😢 please help, 400 days in campaign I recruited ghuilman mercenary clan but they have no ghuilman troops😢

You can't get them aside from beating them in battle, making them prisoners and recruiting them there, or fighting a lord who has them as prisoners and "rescuing" them by recruiting them after beating said lord. You could also use a cheat command, but I don't know their troop ID, you'd have to find it yourself.

the cavalry thing is so dumb since ai cav dont cycle charge they just tell them to charge and then they just run around in circles or chase stragglers.

While the result of this video dose not suprise me, there is one thing not touched on here. And while niche, it is a valid point when looking to maximize your army. The heavy spearmen dose'nt have a throwing weapon, a trait they share with Vlandian sargets, and the Darkhan. witch makes these overall lower power units very good at giving you a shielded frontline, and a ease to add fliters to your army to make groups. Something that I value if I want to use the Wildling of Battania.

Personally, my army must have a 50/50 ratio of spearmen and axemen, with a back board of 1/3 archers and 1/3 calvary.

Sturgia has in my eyes the best infantry in the game you must only mixed the types of them a men in the fiesta line spearmen in the second and in the 3. Line all the shock troops it's a really hard combination of troops to beat them

the heroic line breaker is way better in melee. They just have a bit less armor & no shield so they are vulnerable to ranged attacks.

they are pretty much the best shield troop on foot. But they'd just perform better on horseback most of the time so not much reason to dismount

Question! How do you guys keep the Heavy Axemen from retreating when you order them to "Engage"? Like I tell my guys to hold fire, them engage, but instead of attacking they just keep walking away from the enemy.

That's because engage means skirmish which basically means that ranged units will go to their ideal range then walk backwards so they create space to throw more axes in Heavy axeman case

Spearmen are better if in command by the player. The shield lines and square formations are the best counter to horse archers, cavalry and ranged infantry and it isn’t close
