How SPECIAL is the Heavy Spearman? Bannerlord infantry unit Troops guide

This is a 1.8. Bannerlord in Depth Analysis of the Infantry troop knows as Heavy Spearman.
This video is part of a Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord Playlist where we analyze each unit not only based on their equipment but also on statistics taken after intensive testings.
The Data will be trimmed down and showcased both throughout the video and at the end to allow the viewer to know as much as possible about the unit in question.
A score will also be provided at the end based on Lyon’s opinion, this score shouldn’t be taken as hard evidence, as different playstyles may impact the way viewers evaluate units.
In this here video we are going to talk about the Sturgian Heavy Spearman.
A unit that as been for a long time the worst T5 infantry in the game but that, after patch 1.7. recieved an armor buff that made it competitive. But just how much really?

1 handed swords need to be buffed. maybe add a bleeding effect? also swords should have much faster recover than a top-heavy mace or axe(I know from experience) I wish the sturgian spearmen had 2 shields tho, much tankier

the advantage of a sword i guess is that they are generally longer, allowing the troop to stay further from the target. That way they should stay out of reach of a shorter weapon. Unfortunately the game is not that deep yet and 1H swords are kinda meh.

@@LyonExodus Swords are the pistols of medieval times, the main weapon is the Spear. You should try cutting iron with a knife, good luck.

@@LyonExodus Another big difference is the ability to thrust. Alas, swords all have really, really low thrust damge, and piercing just isn't that great of a damage type anyway.

my infantry is a 50/50 split with heavy spearman and legionary, my strategy most of the time when attacking or defending is infantry to form a shield wall and let my Fians rain arrows on the enemies. During intense outnumber battles, my spearman are better survivors than legionary. I find myself restocking more on legionarys than on spearmans.

Good video! But I would like to write about one drawback of this unit: it cannot form a wall of spears (if I missed something in the updates and now their spears can do it, then I apologize). This makes this unit quite vulnerable to cavalry with a good charge and they will suffer losses (which is somewhat compensated by their good armor, but still). This makes this unit somewhat less flexible as a spearman. They are best used on various hills, where the speed of the enemy cavalry drops noticeably. Also, this unit, due to its good armor and survivability in general, can work well as a deterrent to enemy infantry due to its armor and the ability to inflict at least some damage and not get stuck only on a spear (battles in the game are quite fleeting, so good timing is important here), allowing other infantry or cavalry to defeat enemy infantry with flanks or rear. Also, if the developers still ever fix the AI spearmen and they will use them normally, then this unit will also become not so useful, in my opinion.

I think it would be easier for the devs to make spear shorter for the near future than to fix the AI. But generally speaking for high tier infantry as long as they stick togheter cavalry can't really do much. they might land a strike on the first unit but the next ones will take the rider down or deal an equal amount of damage to him. The axeman video had a bit at around 1:40 where we can see exactely that. But yes, the jagged spear can't brace, but i'd gladly trade that if it means they can use it properly when charging and have a chance to kill infantry if they get stuck with it.

I tried to keep equal number of axemen and spearmen but axemen kept dying so I just ended up keeping it spearmen all the way.

Haven't played in a while but did you use shield wall when charging your infantry? That's what i generally did and the axes tended to perform better. Anyway, if you find something that works stick with it. Don't trust an idiot on the internet just because he has a different opinion.

​@@LyonExodus Works both ways, that last part. Haha, I jest. Yeah so anyway I just bunch em all up in first group, put em on shield wall while my archers do the heavy lifting. Charge them when it looks like time. I'm doing all sturgian play through you see. Say I have like 20 axemen and 20 spearmen and some other 20 odd low tier sturgian melee. I would constantly lose axemen but spearmen would stick around much longer. So I just decided to go all spearmen and they are doing just fine. no mods no nothing.

@@dkelrk1I don't know if things have changed in the past year, but from me testing these Heavy Spearmen suck against cavalry(banner knight in this case). Spears in general are horrible in this game so I removed those sticks from the Heavy Spearmen and lo and behold they crushed those Banner Knights with ease, on flat terrain!

They are both good troops, you decide. I generally prefer using all troops and play faction only so i end up having close to a 50/50 among them. But i tend to prioritize getting the Axeman first.
