this album destroys all conceived notions of a "country record"- all the stereotypes and tropes we've heard for YEARS! While still being a very country record. At 5:34 when George got like a sudden epiphany or realization that it was drugs when he said OH !! was WAY too funny than I would've thought lmfaooooo. I thought this song had a very interesting story to it and the simple groove and tempo fitted well with the theme because you could just rock to it and his voice kinda sang it in like a bit of a lullaby fashion to me which was cool. Dope stuff from Sturgill Simpson and cool reaction as usual Lost In Vegas.

William Johnson. your turtle statement is correct. the rest of your story is wrong. the song is about all theories on life . he is saying I'm the end love is all that matters. heard it from his own mouth in the Joe rogan podcast . turtles all the way down is another life theory as others like christianianty Buddhism. etc.. no attitude in this comment ..just letting you know bro

Turtles all the way down is a reference to a story Sturgill told once on JRE: Sturgill was attending some type of lecture about the structure of the cosmos or something along those lines, and at some pint a lady stood up and said basically that there’s no way any of this is true because as a Native American legend states, we’re all just riding around on the back of a large turtle. The lecturer, or whoever was leading the discussion, in an attempt to show what a silly idea that was then asked, “Well, what’s the turtle riding on?” The lady responded, “It’s turtles all the way down” It’s meant to point out the absurdity of fundamental religious belief and how pointless it can be to try to change the mind of someone so invested in maintaining those beliefs however absurd.
@JRRobin
@JRRobin 6 жыл бұрын
When I was a kid I heard the description of a flat Earth on top of infinite turtles attributed to medieval Catholicism but I guess it does make more sense to be a native american image. Either way it always made me feel like, no matter how deep we go into understanding life and nature, there will always be some left to the unknown
@acetate909
@acetate909 5 жыл бұрын
Actually the real mythology is that the Earth rests on the back of a turtle and that turtle rests on the back of a larger turtle and so on forever. The concept is refereed to as infinite regress.
@AnonYmous-xp1ym
@AnonYmous-xp1ym 5 жыл бұрын
Three things: Sturgill didn't originate the saying, the World Turtle is a part of many cultures (not just Native American), and the saying doesn't actually come from the World Turtle myth directly. I think Carl Sagan told the story originally, but I could be wrong. It is an old story though. Basically it's as Michael Worley told it. As far as I know, the World Turtle myth does not say what the World Turtle is standing on, if anything.

Btw love when you give your opinion on what you think something means and then follow with “i’m not sure but that’s how I’m perceiving it” great attitude, a lot of people just just to conclusion and act like they know exactly what the artist meant even if it isn’t.

"Turtles all the way down" is an expression of the problem of infinite regress. The saying alludes to the mythological idea of a World Turtle that supports the earth on its back. It suggests that this turtle rests on the back of an even larger turtle, which itself is part of a column of increasingly large turtles that continues indefinitely en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turtles_all_the_way_down

This song sounds amazing when Sturgill goes solo with an acoustic guitar. He's a redonkulous player. If you have a mind to, check one of his acoustic dealio's on here. You won't regret. My personal fave is his appearance on the NPR tiny desk thingy.

He’s referencing DMT. It’s found throughout your body and in a wide varieties of plants across the world. Upon doing it, you realize that there is something more than can be explained. Also if there is not something more than can be explained, then it doesn’t make the trip worth while.

To give some perspective. My father had committed suicide 5 years ago. The aftershock almost ruined my life. I was on hard drugs and on the verge of suicide. My friend introduced me to psychedelics and they saved my life. They taught me how to love myself again and showed me that my life has purpose.

YEEESSSS!!!! This song is the best!! This song is about psychedelic drugs btw. And George, turtles all the way down means pretty much how you interpreted it. You guys should do “It ain’t all flowers” it’s so different than any other country song I’ve ever heard, it’s almost like a 60s-70s psychedelic rock/country song

The line "Tell me how you make illegal Something that we all make in our brain" Is a reference to free will, not drugs. In other lines to the song Simpson elaborates that drugs can be the metaphorical key to unlocking your mind, self awareness, empathy, and self actualization. Which is why he ends his song stating "So don't waste your mind on nursery rhymes Or fairy tales of blood and wine" Because to him the real miracle lies within ourselves, in our minds, and the beauty of life all around us. Not in any particular religion, and that's how it's always been "It's turtles all the way down the line" And always will be

This. He's also been pretty open with the booze thing and has told a story about drinking a few, lowering his guard, and telling his wife that he regretted drinking so much but couldn't seem to stop. Apparently she took those statements very seriously and promptly took the action necessary to help/force him to dry up which he seems very grateful for; "They all changed the way I think but, love's the only thing that's ever saved my life."

Love this song, love everything you guys do. Watching you guys struggle with the message and then realize what it was about 2/3 through was so much fun. If you watch the video for the song, you would get it 30 seconds in. “Turtles all the way down” is a reference to Steven Hawking quote from his book “brief history of time.” You came pretty close to the meaning, because it is referencing an old women’s reaction to a speakers explanation of space and time. Her response was “everything you have said today was rubbish, we all know that the universe is just the earth on top of a turtle.” The speaker responds “ok, but what is the turtle standing on” her response “very clever young man, but we all know it is turtles all the way down!” Of course the speaker is speechless, how can you respond to a belief like that.
