Dan Sterling I listen to *REAL* country music. It has NOTHING to do with pop country bullshit. I listen to *REAL* rap, hip hop, rock etc etc and it, too, has nuthin to do with mainstream bullshit. Enjoy the good music.

There's been a recent resurgence in REALLY solid country and fans of this style universally shun what they call 'Arena' or 'Boy Band' Country acts that put out lyrics that are utterly predictable and empty. For really good contemporary country, sometimes described as 'Outlaw Country' in the tradition of Waylon Jennings or Merle Haggard - check out nearly any act produced by Dave Cobb. Tyler Childers, Nikki Lane, Brett Cobb, Cody Jinks, Whitey Morgan are great acts. I also dig Colter Wall, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Lilly Hiatt and Guns Girls and Glory - I'm sure there are a lot of others, but that's who I've been listening to in addition to the classics.

Sturgill is a little older than you might think - almost 40 - and he knows what it is to work a daily grind job. He is fairly new to the scene.. He toured some with a bluegrass band in his twenties, then gave up and spent three years in the navy and another 6 years or so working in a freight yard. He decided to try again, and started getting noticed in alternative country circles about 5 years ago.

Thanks so much for checking out Sturgill. Sincerely hope you'll come back to anything off "Sailor's Guide..." I think perhaps "All Around You" would be a great one because of the horns, and production.

Sturgill (Pronounced Stur-JILL or just Stu for short) has released three albums so far. ("High Top Mountain", "Metamodern Sounds in Country Music", and "A Sailor's Guide to Earth".) He has been around solo approximately 5 years, and just turned 40 recently. He was in a band called Sunday Valley prior to going solo. This is his second foray in Nashville, the first time approximately 10 years ago when absolutely no one was playing a more traditional country music. (Compared to the Pop or Bro Country that is being shoved down country listeners throats presently.) He is a vocal opponent of such music and has been completely rejected by Main Stream Music Row country & country award shows. The first "High Top Mountain" was a very traditional old school country album. "Metamodern Sounds in Country Music" could almost be called a psychedelic country album. (A play on words nod to Ray Charles album "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music") Both of these albums were self-financed and released by Thirty Tigers. MMSiCM was recorded in four days for $4400 and made it to Top 15 on Apple i-Tunes sales with absolutely *No Radio* play. His third album "A Sailor's Guide to Earth" is a recording for his first child, a son, about how to live life as a signed artist with Atlantic Records. As stated below in the comments, not only was it nominated for a Country Grammy (Which he won), but was nominated for Album of the Year against, Beyonce, Adele, Justin Beiber, and Drake. Recently during the CMA's (Country Music Awards) he was not even nominated OR invited to the show. Most likely for his vocal opposition to the present state of country music. So what did Stu do? He brought his guitar & case and placed his Country Grammy trophy in the case, busked for money for the ACLU, and live streamed it on Facebook!

Hey Ashley, Yeah, I've known about Hank III for awhile now. But Stu's my favorite for many different reasons. As for more traditional country, there's so much out there that just isn't being heard. It's one of the reasons I write about more obscure and lesser known country artists. (Though I write more about unsigned and under known rock bands.)

What I like about Sturgill Simpson is how well he evokes '70's Outlaw Country, and manages to be so subtly subversive that many don't notice it at all. Also, you can't do Sturgill Simpson without doing "Turtles all the Way Down."

great choice guys! Sturgill is a fine lyric writer who understands the bittersweetness of life. That's something anybody working for a living can get behind! I understand why you wouldn't share personal info, but I'm curious how you guys grind out cash because those lyrics obviously resonate with you also. Anyways, keep up the good work! What makes Isbell so great is that there are soooo many great songs in his catalogue. You can be hooked on one for awhile and then go back to one you haven't heard in awhile. Sturgill is one of the best!! Life Of Sin is a great one. He's a new artist came out around 2013. Country radio doesn't play him, of course, cuz its too real and not pop enough. But he's of one the few innovators in country music today bringing in new lyrical themes, psychedelic music, progressive views, mixed with outlaw or traditional sounds. Also 'Waiting Around To Die' by Townes Van Zandt, a country song from 1970, may have been the influence lyrically. Now that you've done Sturgill and Stapleton, JASON ISBELL is next!

I was surprised with the Chris Stapleon and now this?!!? Yeah, it's almost like these dudes are looking through my playlists. I was hooked with Turtles All The Way Down. They've been on point with the reviews. If you're not music exhausted and want to try another genre, Punk is always waiting gentleman. Also there's also Drive By Truckers are always good for some alt-country/southern rock.

Heri Roman I think Turtles all the way down is his best, but there are a few that are very close

Yeah, I'd love to hear then discuss some Punk, but I fear they might struggle if it doesn't have some legit groove - they did mention having trouble with an early Anthrax song which was lacking in that dept. George (with the glasses) mentioned having listened to Green Day, in one video, but to me, Green Day isn't quite there.

Azuka Imegwu No prob there. Plenty to pick from. How about some Dead Kennedys or Bad Brains for something that's easy to digest?

Seconding Drive by Truckers. I'd suggest Decoration Day, Gravity's Gone, or Outfit as good places to start.

I love watching you Lost In Vegas. It's a great start to the day, b/c you guys are always dead on with the assessment of the songs. I love how you break down the songs, and point out many different ways of looking at lyrics. Plus, you guys are super funny!! Thanks for introducing me to some great new music! :) Could you maybe play "Denial" from Sevendust someday? I think you'll love it, too. Keep up the great work!

Wow guys...I grew up in the 80's, on Hip Hop and Rock and Roll and now listen to everything. You've done (and LOVED) Chris Stapleton and Sturgill Simpson. Now, I highly suggest that you try Whiskey Myers next....and I recommend starting with Broken Window Serenade. So much emotion and a great story is told in the lyrics. Thanks for all you do. As a music fan, this is my favorite channel by far!

Thank you for doing this, one of my favorite songs in the world..Sturgill has been around several years..He's a Kentucky boy just like Chris Stapleton and ME lol...Sturgill just doesn't get radio play much because he isn't "Pop Country" and musically he is more traditional. Lyrically he is, let's just say a "Free Thinker" lol Yelawolf "Pop the Trunk"

Ryan and George tear up another one! Such a great reaction video. Not quite as blown away with the music as you are the singing and voice, where with rap and metal, you guys can really get into the music, it seems. Great vid, and look forward to the next Rush vid we all know is coming! BTW, as usual, Fear Factory and King's X, brothers, please!
