Dan Sterling I listen to *REAL* country music. It has NOTHING to do with pop country bullshit. I listen to *REAL* rap, hip hop, rock etc etc and it, too, has nuthin to do with mainstream bullshit. Enjoy the good music.

There's been a recent resurgence in REALLY solid country and fans of this style universally shun what they call 'Arena' or 'Boy Band' Country acts that put out lyrics that are utterly predictable and empty. For really good contemporary country, sometimes described as 'Outlaw Country' in the tradition of Waylon Jennings or Merle Haggard - check out nearly any act produced by Dave Cobb. Tyler Childers, Nikki Lane, Brett Cobb, Cody Jinks, Whitey Morgan are great acts. I also dig Colter Wall, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Lilly Hiatt and Guns Girls and Glory - I'm sure there are a lot of others, but that's who I've been listening to in addition to the classics.

Sturgill is a little older than you might think - almost 40 - and he knows what it is to work a daily grind job. He is fairly new to the scene.. He toured some with a bluegrass band in his twenties, then gave up and spent three years in the navy and another 6 years or so working in a freight yard. He decided to try again, and started getting noticed in alternative country circles about 5 years ago.

Sturgill (Pronounced Stur-JILL or just Stu for short) has released three albums so far. ("High Top Mountain", "Metamodern Sounds in Country Music", and "A Sailor's Guide to Earth".) He has been around solo approximately 5 years, and just turned 40 recently. He was in a band called Sunday Valley prior to going solo.This is his second foray in Nashville, the first time approximately 10 years ago when absolutely no one was playing a more traditional country music. (Compared to the Pop or Bro Country that is being shoved down country listeners throats presently.) He is a vocal opponent of such music and has been completely rejected by Main Stream Music Row country & country award shows. The first "High Top Mountain" was a very traditional old school country album. "Metamodern Sounds in Country Music" could almost be called a psychedelic country album. (A play on words nod to Ray Charles album "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music") Both of these albums were self-financed and released by Thirty Tigers. MMSiCM was recorded in four days for $4400 and made it to Top 15 on Apple i-Tunes sales with absolutely *No Radio* play. His third album "A Sailor's Guide to Earth" is a recording for his first child, a son, about how to live life as a signed artist with Atlantic Records. As stated below in the comments, not only was it nominated for a Country Grammy (Which he won), but was nominated for Album of the Year against, Beyonce, Adele, Justin Beiber, and Drake. Recently during the CMA's (Country Music Awards) he was not even nominated OR invited to the show. Most likely for his vocal opposition to the present state of country music. So what did Stu do? He brought his guitar & case and placed his Country Grammy trophy in the case, busked for money for the ACLU, and live streamed it on Facebook!

@huntermacleod23886 жыл бұрын
Hey Ashley, Yeah, I've known about Hank III for awhile now. But Stu's my favorite for many different reasons. As for more traditional country, there's so much out there that just isn't being heard. It's one of the reasons I write about more obscure and lesser known country artists. (Though I write more about unsigned and under known rock bands.)

Sturgill is one of the best!! Life Of Sin is a great one. He's a new artist came out around 2013. Country radio doesn't play him, of course, cuz its too real and not pop enough. But he's of one the few innovators in country music today bringing in new lyrical themes, psychedelic music, progressive views, mixed with outlaw or traditional sounds. Also 'Waiting Around To Die' by Townes Van Zandt, a country song from 1970, may have been the influence lyrically. Now that you've done Sturgill and Stapleton, JASON ISBELL is next!

Bill Benoit, instead of locust, help us push for halo. Much better song but i do love me some locust.

Scott Bell, no doubt. Easily the best song on that album, IMO.
