I would say Flaming Lips and Sparklehorse. Apparently he has some things in common with Mark Linkous, such as his family being coal miners and a heavy use of distortion in his music. If you want to know what pervasive sadness sounds like, listen to some Sparklehorse. I was turned off by the band's name for many years, and when I finally give it a listen I regretted my initial decision to not listen. Sparklehorse/Mark Linkous quickly became one of my all time favorite bands and song writers. Unfortunately I didn't get into them until about 2013...which was 3 years after Linkous committed suicide.

I feel it's more a nod to the past than anything else. It reminds me of Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop as he was born on Mars. There's also a polish song called ''Zegarmistrz światła purpurowy", which in rough translation means "violet light clockmaker". In that song clockmaker is the bringer of death. Analyzing that from this viewpoint, this song is about Spikes and Julias dreamt future life and his goal of killing his past from Mars. Archetypal stories. Edit: Also the auto used as the front cover is a Chevrolet Camaro SS 1969 (SS for Sturgil Simpson? I don't think that's a coincidence.)
